New gene discovery for babies born with hole in the heart

May 27, 2013 ? New gene discovery for babies born with hole in the heart A new gene associated with a form of congenital heart disease in newborn babies -- known as "a hole in the heart" has been discovered by researchers. British Heart Foundation (BHF) Professor Bernard Keavney, from The University of Manchester and Newcastle University, led the research which saw investigators from Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford and Leicester universities in the UK, together with colleagues in Europe, Australia and Canada pool resources.

The discovery, published in Nature Genetics today, will help lead to better understanding of why some patients are born with the disorder. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common form of congenital malformation, occurring in seven in 1000 babies born and is one of the major causes of childhood death and illness. Most patients born with CHD now survive to adulthood, so identifying the responsible genes is important as experts attempt to provide individual-specific genetic counselling for these people.

In about 20% of cases, a predisposing cause can be identified, for example Down's Syndrome, but in the remainder of patients, although genes are recognised to be important, scientists do not know the identity of these genes. The study, funded by the BHF and the Wellcome Trust, looked at over 2,000 CHD patients and measured over 500,000 genetic markers which vary in the general population. The genetic markers in the patients were compared to the markers of over 5,600 people in good health who acted as a control group.

The researchers found a relationship between a particular region of the human genome and risk of atrial septal defect (ASD) -- a "hole" between the heart's blood-collecting chambers, which they went on to confirm in additional cases of atrial septal defect and healthy controls. BHF Professor Keavney, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at The University of Manchester, said identifying a gene associated with one type of CHD was an important step forward. "We found that a common genetic variation near a gene called Msx1 was strongly associated with the risk of a particular type of CHD called atrial septal defect or hole in the heart," he said. "ASD is one of the most common forms of congenital heart disease, and it carries a risk of heart failure and stroke. We estimated that around 10% of ASDs may be due to the gene we found. We can now work to find out how Msx1 and/or its neighbour genes affect the risk of ASD."

Researchers looked at all the major types of congenial heart disease (CHD), but they did not find a genetic marker common in all types of CHD. Professor Keavney added: "Our work also suggests that if we conduct larger studies we will be able to find genes that cause other types of CHD. Although we are not there yet, further studies may enable us to give better genetic counselling to high risk families. Also, when we identify genes important in the development of the heart because they have gone wrong, it helps us understand normal development better. Such an understanding is fundamental to any attempt to treat people with heart disease at any age -- for example those suffering from heart failure -- using regenerative medicine." Dr Shannon Amoils, Senior Research Advisor at the BHF, which part-funded the study, said: "We've made great strides in treating congenital heart disease; most babies born with a heart defect have a much brighter future now than they would have had in the 1960s when the BHF was founded. But we still need to fund much more research like this, to better understand the fundamental causes of congenital heart defects. "These important results show how large collaborative studies are incredibly useful for uncovering the influence of our genes on congenital heart disease.

As researchers continue to identify other associated genes, we will be able to better predict the chances of children being born with heart problems, and will also learn more about the underlying processes that can go wrong in the developing heart."

Just The Judge prevails in Irish 1,000 Guineas ? Horseracing News

Just The Judge proved her class in the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas (Group 1) at Curragh in Ireland by winning the race comfortably. The victory helped her owners bag a cash prize of ?141,463.41 in the end.

The three-year-old filly was expected to be dominant, thus she was given the best odds for victory. When the traps were opened, she did not attack her opponents and opted to save stamina for the later stages. This strategy worked out perfectly for her, as she managed to lead the final 150 yards with ease.

On the performance of Just The Judge, trainer Charles Hills stated, ?She's a diamond filly. She's a great filly to deal with, so easy and very professional. Jamie (jockey) has given her a peach [of a ride]. He rode her just like he said in the paddock to the stride. The Coronation Stakes should really suit her.?

Jamie Spencer was also happy with the ride and said, ?She's a smart filly. I got a good position and at halfway I was very happy and it all went really well. She's a filly we always thought would want further and she'll be even better when she goes further.?

This was the second outing for the Irish filly this year and she pleased her fans by getting back on top once again. In her previous race, she was unable to finish on top of the table and had to settle for the runner up spot.

Prior to that, Just The Judge had appeared in three events during 2012 and managed to win all of them. She has now increased her overall tally of victories to four and will be looking to deliver strong results in the future competitions.

Other than the victorious filly, Rehn's Nest also made a solid impression in the Irish 1,000 Guineas despite the fact that she was amongst the least favourites to succeed. Her runner up place would have pleased the owners, as they bagged a cash prize of ?46,341.46.

Although Rehn's Nest does not have a very good record, she seems to be headed towards the right direction now and might start winning some important events in the future.

Clemens still dogged by court case

AP

Roger Clemens was found not guilty last year of lying to Congress about his alleged steroid use.

By TOM HAYS

updated 4:53 p.m. ET May 26, 2013

NEW YORK - Despite Roger Clemens' victory last year in his perjury case, a defamation lawsuit filed against the former Yankees ace more than four years ago in federal court in Brooklyn is threatening to keep alive allegations that he used steroids and cheated on his wife.

A magistrate judge in the civil case last week ordered lawyers for Clemens to turn over government documents to the plaintiff, former strength coach Brian McNamee, including 22 FBI reports and notes from an Internal Revenue Service agent that refer to Clemens' alleged affairs. A status conference in the case is scheduled for Wednesday.

Judge Cheryl Pollak wrote that adultery "is not usually found to be probative of a witness' character for truthfulness or untruthfulness." But, she added, lawyers for McNamee "might be able to cross-examine Mr. Clemens about instances in which he allegedly lied about his relationships, since in that case, the basis for impeachment would be dishonesty."

Given "the sensitive nature" of the FBI reports and IRS notes, Pollak said they could be filed under a protective order that would keep them private for now.

Lawyers representing Clemens in the civil case had sought to withhold more than 1,600 pages of documents from the government's criminal probe on the basis that they were grand jury material. However, the judge found that much of the material - including bank statements, letters and business records - should be turned over to the plaintiffs, saying that "documents produced in response to federal grand jury subpoenas does not automatically shield them from disclosure."

Pollak's order "gives us the essential fruits of the government investigation" in a civil case that doesn't require the higher standard of proof needed in the criminal one, Richard Emery, an attorney for McNamee said Sunday.

"All we have to prove is that Clemens more probably than not lied and that McNamee didn't," he said.

The 2009 federal lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, alleges Clemens launched an "intense and coordinated public relations offensive" against McNamee after the trainer told federal investigators and Congress that he injected Clemens more than a dozen times with steroids and human growth hormone from 1998 through 2001.

The suit quotes Clemens saying in a YouTube video in 2007 that McNamee "did not inject steroids into my body either when I played in Toronto for the Blue Jays or the New York Yankees." It also cites an interview with ESPN in May in which Clemens, when asked about McNamee, responded that it was a case of "somebody out there that is really crawling up your back to make a buck."

McNamee called Clemens a "pathological liar" in a story published Sunday in the Daily News.

"Steroid abuse was rampant in Major League Baseball and he was the father of it," McNamee said.

There was no immediate response to messages left Sunday with an attorney for Clemens. Neither he nor McNamee are expected at this week's status conference in Brooklyn.

Last year, a Washington jury found the seven-time Cy Young Award winner not guilty of lying to Congress about steroids and human growth hormone. He had adamantly denied using either substance at a 2008 congressional hearing.

The prosecution's case at a two-month trial had relied heavily on the testimony of McNamee, who told jurors he injected Clemens with steroids and HGH many times. But the defense sought to show how McNamee's story evolved over time, and there was no one else to claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens' drug use.

Former country music star Mindy McCready, who died this year, made headlines in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married. Clemens has denied the relationship.

Medical pot laws & treats may send more kids to ER

CHICAGO (AP) ? Increased use of medical marijuana may lead to more young children getting sick from accidentally eating food made with the drug, a Colorado study suggests.

Medical marijuana items include yummy-looking gummy candies, cookies and other treats that may entice young children. Fourteen children were treated at Colorado Children's Hospital in the two years after a 2009 federal policy change led to a surge in medical marijuana use, the study found. That's when federal authorities said they would not prosecute legal users.

Study cases were mostly mild, but parents should know about potential risks and keep the products out of reach, said lead author Dr. George Sam Wang, an emergency room physician at the hospital. stare

Unusual drowsiness and unsteady walking were among the symptoms. One child, a 5-year-old boy, had trouble breathing. Eight children were hospitalized, two in the intensive care unit, though all recovered within a few days, Wang said. By contrast, in four years preceding the policy change, the Denver-area hospital had no such cases.

Some children came in laughing, glassy-eyed or "acting a little goofy and 'off,'" Wang said. Many had eaten medical marijuana food items, although nonmedical marijuana was involved in at least three cases. The children were younger than 12 and included an 8-month-old boy.

The study was released Monday in JAMA Pediatrics.

Eighteen states and Washington, D.C., allow medical marijuana, though it remains illegal under federal law. Colorado's law dates to 2000 but the study notes that use there soared after the 2009 policy change on prosecution. Last year, Colorado and Washington state legalized adult possession of small amounts of nonmedical marijuana.

Some states, including Colorado, allow medical marijuana use by sick kids, with parents' supervision.

In a journal editorial, two Seattle poisoning specialists say that at least seven more states are considering legalizing medical marijuana and that laws that expand marijuana use likely will lead to more children sickened.

Check young kids for motor delays: pediatricians

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors should regularly screen babies and young children for delays in motor skill development - including trouble sitting, standing and speaking - at well-child visits, pediatricians said today.

In a clinical report, an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) panel said diagnosing and treating those problems early on may ultimately improve kids' outlook and help families gain additional support.

"Identifying children with delays and motor abnormalities, theoretically or hopefully would set them on a better trajectory," said Meghann Lloyd, who studies motor development at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada.

Lloyd, who was not involved in the new report, called it "a really big step forward for the field."

Dr. Garey Noritz and colleagues on the AAP's neuromotor screening expert panel lay out the skills that a child should have developed by office visits at ages 9, 18, 30 and 48 months.

For example, a 9-month-old baby should be able to roll to both sides, sit well without support and grasp objects. At 18 months, that child should be able to walk, sit and stand on its own.

Pediatricians should also ask parents open-ended questions about their child's development and watch the child play for signs of delays or loss of motor skills at well-child visits, the panel said.

On a general exam, it recommended that doctors measure head size and look at children's muscle tone, reflexes and eye movements.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-backed expert panel, said in 2006 there wasn't enough evidence to recommend for or against screening instruments designed to detect speech and language delays in young kids. The task force does not have screening recommendations for motor delays in general.

"The AAP? recognized that we as a profession weren't necessarily doing a good job screening for motor problems," Noritz, from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, told Reuters Health.

Cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy are two of the most common motor-related diseases and could both be picked up and treated earlier than they typically are now, according to Noritz.

He said families often refer to the "diagnostic odyssey" involved in getting a definitive diagnosis for a sick child.

"We're hoping that people can get to a specialist more quickly and thus get diagnosed more quickly, but that primary care clinicians at the same time as they're looking for a diagnosis, will refer (kids) to therapy," he said.

PROMOTING MOVEMENT

There is normal variation in how kids develop, Lloyd said - so if a child is a couple of months late to walk, for example, parents shouldn't be overly concerned.

But longer delays, or combinations of multiple motor problems, are a good reason for a visit to the pediatrician, she told Reuters Health.

"Other types of movements that don't seem right, like a tremor or a rigidity or some sort of repetitive motor movement would be another red flag for me," Lloyd added.

Typical motor delays that aren't a result of more serious underlying conditions are treated with physical or occupational therapy.

Parents can bring their children to an early movement program such as Kindergym to promote development of motor skills, Lloyd said, regardless of other treatments and whether or not they are delayed.

Having poor motor skills in general "sets you on a trajectory for low levels of physical activity, which of course is related to obesity," she said.

"The prevention of these delays or the promotion of motor ability can actually impact your health for your lifespan."

The Writer's Place: Focus on... Book Collaboration With Stephanie ...

The book collaboration process can be the best of experiences... or it can be a nightmare with neither parties happy about the process. In today's "Focus On..." post, Stephanie Golden shares her expertise and experiences about collaborating on a book project.?

But first, a little about Stephanie. She is an award-winning author of nine books, including six collaborations with experts (most on health, fitness, and medicine) and two books on women?s issues: Slayingthe Mermaid: Women and the Culture of Sacrifice and The Women Outside:Meanings and Myths of Homelessness.?

She?s also a book doctor and writes websites, newsletters, training manuals, and reports, and blogs at Writing Craft & Practice.? (For more about Stephanie, visit her website.)

Books are my favorite form of writing. I like to get my teeth into a big project and spin out the ideas over time. I wrote three books on my own and six collaborations with expert authors. In my definition, ?collaboration? means I get my name on the book and actually write it, as opposed to doctoring a manuscript. If I ghosted a book ?invisibly,? I?d ask for a larger fee.?

I was a developmental editor at a book publisher for fifteen years and have done lots of book doctoring since?useful experience, since collaboration requires client management. People may be anxious about the writing process and react badly when they see their words on paper. They need reassurance. Or they have difficulty verbalizing ideas.?

My client Yamuna Zake is a genius body therapist who created her own self-therapy system.
When teaching classes, she can demonstrate her routines. But writing requires a whole other level of detail. When words failed her, she?d get down on the floor and do show instead of tell. At first she and my other body-therapist collaborator, Ming Chew, were both quite irritated by my constant query, ?What does that mean, exactly???
Even as you strive to do your best, you also take your ego out of the process. It?s the other person?s book. I may have written a neat phrase that I just love, but if the expert says, ?I would never use that language,? I have to drop it and find another. Still, you?re the writing expert, so you must assert your authority as the one who knows how to build structure and present information clearly. You strike a balance, inhabiting a space somewhere between just doing it for the money and being too identified with it.
Another essential non-writing skill is the ability to stand up for yourself. You need to negotiate an agreement with the expert that ensures you are paid adequately and protects you in case something goes wrong?and in book publishing, anything can go wrong. (Visit this page of my website for articles detailing other critical collaboration issues.)

You must also screen would-be clients, weeding out people who ?will drive you crazy, don?t have the money to pay you, don?t actually have enough material to fill a book, or are caught up in a fantasy and aren?t willing to think their concepts through. No one who hasn?t done it realizes how much work it is to write a book. If they don?t have the fire in the belly, it won?t happen.?

I get queries through Facebook or my website, but in my experience the best sources for work are personal contacts. My first collaboration, with Yamuna, happened after I profiled her for a magazine. All the others came through referrals from agents who knew me and from writer colleagues.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama visited tornado-devastated Moore, Okla., Sunday, consoling people staggered by the loss of life and property and promising that the government will be behind them "every step of the way."

"I'm just a messenger here," the president said, saying "folks are behind you" across America. He offered moral and monetary support in the wake of the monstrous EF5 tornado that killed 24 people, including 10 children, last Monday afternoon.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials, Obama noted a substantial rebuilding job ahead and said that "our hearts go out to you."

"This is a strong community with strong character. There's no doubt they will bounce back," he said. "But they need help."

The White House said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," presidential spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters accompanying Obama to Oklahoma on Air Force One.

For Obama, Sunday's visit had an all-too-familiar ring.

Only five months into his second term, he has traveled to the northeast to console people in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, and visited Connecticut and Arizona to comfort people traumatized by shooting rampages. He also has undertaken his consoler-in-chief role at the site of plant explosions and mine disasters, not to mention a series of natural disasters including Joplin, Mo., and the Jersey Shore, which was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last year.

Once on the ground, Obama urged the American people to make contributions, saying the damage was "pretty hard to comprehend."

Shortly after his arrival on a partly cloudy day, Obama rode past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris, witnessing devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. His first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand. As he walked, the demolished school was on his left and on his right, homes as far as the eye could see were reduced to piles of rubble. Vehicles were turned upside down and toys like a pink doll carriage and children's books were strewn with furniture and ripped out wall insulation. Every tree had been stripped of its leaves and bark.

Obama at one point joined the Lewis family, which lost their home behind the school. He said the important thing was that they survived and could replace their things.

"What a mess," he told their son Zack, a third grader at the shattered school. Zack's father, Scott, ran into the school just before the storm hit and ran with his terrified son back to their home's storm shelter.

"You've got some story to tell," Obama told the boy. "This is something you'll remember all your life."

Obama later met privately with victims' families at Moore Fire Department Station (hash)1, which has turned into a command center with dozens of first responders sitting at folding tables where fire trucks are normally parked. Obama marveled that they saved so many lives "given the devastation."

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand.

As he descended the stairs upon landing at Tinker Air Base near here, Obama was greeted first by Fallin, who had said earlier she appreciated the visit, but that her state also needed quick action from FEMA.

The Republican governor said that so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but said she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

(AP) ? Republicans keep slamming President Barack Obama's push to move away from a war footing and recalibrate his counterterrorism strategy.

Critics include Capitol Hill Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham says Obama is projecting weakness at a time when the United States ought to show resolve against al-Qaida and other terror networks.

Graham says, quote, "at a time when we need resolve the most, we're sounding retreat."

Obama gave a major speech Thursday in which he said al-Qaida is "on the path to defeat" and signaled he's reluctant to commit troops overseas to conflicts like Syria. He's also modifying policies on the use of unmanned drone aircraft.

Graham says Obama is displaying a lack of resolve. He spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

Scour: Why Most Bridges Fail

Yesterday the I-5 bridge spanning the Skagit River in Washington had one of its support girders hit by a truck too wide, and the whole scene of contorting metal fell into the water below. Though a number of people and their cars went into the water along with the bridge, thankfully no one was killed.? The collapse of the I-5 bridge has sparked a conversation about the failing infrastructure system of the US, but failures due to girders unable to take a truck impact are hardly a common occurrence. In fact, the most dangerous thing to a bridge is that which it typically takes us over.

Water finds a way. It might be a basement, a beach, or a bridge, but water finds a way. Its power comes from a life-giving combination of cohesion, polarity, and fluidity, not to mention weight. A specific arrangement of atoms gives water heft?enough water to fill seven milk jugs weighs more than 62 pounds. Just six inches of it can lift an SUV off the street. Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen molecule describe this molecular wave that can toss ships, stop fatal car crashes, and undermine embankments.

We brick and mortar ourselves away from nature. The outside world is behind glass, underneath a slab of concrete, running through PVC. Our steel and concrete are suitable enough until nature comes knocking. And when she wants to get in, nothing can stop her.

In the attempt to dodge rivers and streams, nature ultimately determines when we can pass. Her toll is simple: if you engineer the bridge correctly, you can pass. If you don?t, this happens:

Scour is the largest cause of highway bridge failures in the United States [PDF]. During years of service, or during a large event like a flood, the river or stream?s molecular soup carries thousands of pounds of sediment and debris with it. This detritus builds up in the channel and at the piers of the bridge, changing the way the water flows around it. This change in flow (seen in the photo above), if unanticipated by the engineers, gives the water a new plan of attack: blast away supporting material.

In the case of the video above, the flow of the water is blocked, but like the show, the flow must continue. Churning and swirling water caused by the obstruction removes material from the base of the embankment. The water can?t go over, so it eats a hole through. You can see the exact point (around 25 seconds in) when enough material has been removed for the water to take a different path. The path takes the support of the embankment with it. Without support, the bridge collapses spectacularly.

For most bridges, scour is the enemy. Freak accidents like the one in Washington aside, water?s consistently erosive force is what our failing infrastructure system has to worry about. Engineer as we might, we are only a few extra molecules away from realizing that far from controlling nature, we merely endure it.

Communications satellite launched into space - seattlepi.com

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A new military communications satellite has been launched into space.

An unmanned Delta IV rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Friday evening. The satellite was the fifth Wideband Global satcom spacecraft to be launched.

The satellite, which is being sent into an orbit that follows the earth's rotation 22,000 miles above the equator, will serve the U.S. military with the highest capacity communications currently available.

It will take several months for the satellite to settle into the proper orbit.

NKorean envoy delivers letter to China's president

BEIJING (AP) ? A top North Korean envoy delivered a letter from leader Kim Jong Un to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday and told him Pyongyang would take steps to rejoin stalled nuclear disarmament talks, in an apparent victory for Beijing's efforts to coax its unruly ally into lowering tensions.

North Korean Vice Marshal Choe Ryong Hae's three-day visit was seen as a fence-mending mission after Pyongyang angered Beijing with recent snubs and moves to develop its nuclear program. Choe returned to North Korea late Friday.

The official China News Service said Choe delivered the handwritten letter from Kim to Xi at an afternoon meeting at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing. It gave no details about the letter's contents.

North Korea is willing to work with all sides to "appropriately resolve the relevant questions through the six-party talks and other forms," Choe was quoted as saying by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. He said Pyongyang was "willing to take active measures in this regard."

Choe offered no details on how North Korea planned to resume talks. North Korea walked away from the six-party nuclear disarmament talks in 2009 over disagreements on how to verify steps the North was meant to take to end its nuclear programs. Foreign observers often claim that North Korea has a history of raising tensions in an attempt to push its adversaries to negotiations meant to win aid.

Since its third nuclear test, in February, North Korea has repeatedly said that any future diplomatic talks would have to recognize it as a nuclear power. That's at odds with the basis of the six-party talks and puts Pyongyang at loggerheads with Washington, which says it won't accept North Korea as an atomic power and demands that talks be based on past commitments by the North to abandon its nuclear programs.

Still, Choe's remarks seem to indicate an easing of tensions between North Korea and its communist neighbor.

John Delury, a professor at Yonsei University in Seoul who specializes in China and North Korea, said the fact that Kim's envoy "is being quoted as saying that North Korea is open to China's suggestions already is a strong signal of kiss and make up."

"This trip is moving things back to a regular strategic dialogue," he said.

China has been under intense pressure from Washington to push North Korea into lowering tensions and resuming dialogue.

Xi reaffirmed longstanding ties between the communist neighbors, and urged all sides to "keep cool and exercise restraint."

The six-party talks, which include the Koreas, the U.S., Japan, China and Russia, should aim to end North Korea's nuclear programs and "maintain lasting peace and stability on the peninsula and in northeast Asia," Xi was quoted as saying.

The meeting followed an unusual half-year gap in high-level contacts during which Pyongyang angered Beijing by conducting rocket launches, a nuclear test and other saber-rattling ? spiking tensions with South Korea and the U.S.

Beijing considered the moves an affront to its interests in regional stability and showed its displeasure by joining with the U.S. to back U.N. sanctions and cut off dealings with North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank.

North Korea also frustrated Beijing by refusing to agree to high-level meetings and incensed the Chinese public this month with the detention of a Chinese fishing crew.

"The relationship is rocky, so they will try to mend the relationship," Cui Yingjiu, a retired professor of Korean at Peking University, said of North Korea. "Second, they also want to improve relations with the U.S. and need China to be their intermediary."

North Korea has figured prominently in recent visits by Secretary of State John Kerry and other U.S. officials, and Choe's visit to Beijing came ahead of a meeting in California early next month between Xi and President Barack Obama, as well as a planned trip to Beijing by South Korean President Park Geun-hye in late June.

China is North Korea's last significant diplomatic ally and main source of trade and economic assistance. Ties between their insular communist governments have always been wrapped in secrecy and it is not clear whether the contents of Kim's letter to Xi will ever be revealed.

China is believed to have agreed to Choe's visit only after Pyongyang committed to returning to the process of negotiation, and required him to state that publicly twice before his meeting with Xi.

Pyongyang is thought to have a handful of nuclear bombs. It is unclear how far it has advanced in efforts to shrink a warhead down to fit on a missile, but many analysts believe that it hasn't yet mastered that miniaturization technology for a missile capable of hitting the United States.

Earlier Friday, a top Chinese general told Choe that Beijing wanted a peaceful, denuclearized Korean Peninsula, in a reiteration of China's established position that could also be seen as a rebuke to the North.

China's official Xinhua News Agency quoted Fan Changlong as telling Choe that tensions surrounding the nuclear issue have "intensified strategic conflicts among involved parties and jeopardized the peace and stability of the peninsula."

Xinhua quoted Choe as telling Fan that there is "no guarantee of peace," but that his country was "willing to work with all sides to search for a method of solving the problems through dialogue."

On Thursday, Choe told the ruling party's fifth-ranked official that North Korea "is willing to accept the suggestion of the Chinese side and launch dialogue with all relevant parties."

Whatever Happened to the Cast of ?She?s All That??

When She's All That came out in 1999, it was one of the biggest romantic comedies to hit the big screen. Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. seemed like the ones to watch, and we didn't see how another romcom could ever top this teen flick.

Swiss lawyer Denis Oswald to run for IOC president

LONDON (AP) ? Denis Oswald declared his candidacy for IOC president Friday, becoming the fifth member and second European to enter the race to succeed Jacques Rogge.

The 66-year-old Swiss lawyer and head of the international rowing federation sent a letter to IOC members announcing his decision.

"My 40 years of service to the Olympic movement have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of our organization as well as its role and significance in the wider world," Oswald said.

"This knowledge and experience ... will enable me to advance the Olympic cause and enhance the IOC's authority as the leader of world sport."

Oswald joins a field that already includes International Olympic Committee vice presidents Thomas Bach of Germany and Ng Ser Miang of Singapore, Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico and C.K. Wu of Taiwan. Former pole vaulter Sergei Bubka of Ukraine is expected to announce his bid next week.

Rogge is stepping down in September after 12 years as president. The election is Sept. 10 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Oswald told members he will present his "vision and philosophy" in the coming weeks, and he scheduled a news conference for June 3 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Oswald and Bach will be vying for European support. Bach, a lawyer and former Olympic fencer, has been considered a front-runner.

Bach was the first to declare his candidacy two weeks ago, followed a week later by Ng. Carrion, chairman of the IOC finance commission, and Wu, president of the international amateur boxing association, made their bids earlier this week.

Oswald has been an IOC member since 1991. He competed in rowing at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the fours event in Mexico City in '68.

Oswald has been president of the rowing federation since 1989, with his term ending later this year. He served as head of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations from 2000-2012, which gave him a place on the policy-making IOC executive board for that period.

Oswald gained standing in the IOC as chairman of the coordination commission for the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2012 London Games, a position that required oversight of all preparations.

Oswald is also a lawyer based in Neuchatel, Switzerland, and has served as an arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The first major image quality improvements in the history of a widely used century-old printing technique to transform 2-D images into 3-D have been enabled by research at Curtin University

PERTH, AUSTRALIA 9 May 2013 Research conducted at Curtin University in Perth has enabled significant increases in image quality in a widely used 3D printing technique that is more than 100 years old.

Anaglyph printing think of the red-and-blue 3D glasses used to transform 2D images to 3D images in comics, magazines, books, and newspapers came into being when the continuous-tone printed anaglyph was invented by French physicist Louis Ducos du Hauron in 1891.

The technique works by combining the left and right images of a stereoscopic image pair into the red and blue color channels of the output anaglyph image. With the red/blue 3D glasses, the left eye sees only the red channel of the anaglyph image, and the right sees only sees the blue. If the anaglyph 3D image has been constructed correctly, the viewer sees a pleasing 3D image on the printed page.

The project team, led by Curtin research engineer Andrew Woods, targeted crosstalk problems which are visible as ghost-like shadows. Their paper published recently in the SPIE journal Optical Engineering details seven recommendations for overcoming crosstalk.

"The largest reduction in crosstalk is likely be achieved by using inks which have a better spectral purity than current process inks used in color printers," Woods said. "We found that an 80% reduction in crosstalk was potentially achievable just by changing the cyan ink."

The anaglyph technique is easy to implement and the anaglyph 3D glasses are relatively cheap, so the technique is used very widely, Woods said.

However, printed anaglyph images often suffer from a number of image quality limitations. When the 3D image is viewed through the colored glasses, there is often a significant amount of crosstalk (or ghosting), an undesirable property of some 3D techniques whereby the left eye sees some of the image intended for only the right eye, and vice-versa. Crosstalk is usually visible as ghost-like shadows throughout the image. If crosstalk levels are too high, the quality of the 3D experience can be significantly reduced.

"The printed anaglyph is 121 years old, but this appears to be the first time that a detailed technical simulation of crosstalk in printed anaglyphs has been developed," Woods said. "We started by measuring the spectral characteristics of various printing inks, 3D glasses, light sources, and papers. From there we developed a simulation which models the viewing of an anaglyph 3D image, and subsequently performed an experiment to validate the accuracy of the model. We hope this work will help provide a 21st-century improvement to the 19th-century invention."

In addition to changing the cyan ink, recommendations include using high-quality anaglyph glasses, an optimized light source, and improved image processing algorithms.

The full paper is available open access via the SPIE Digital Library: "Characterizing and reducing crosstalk in printed anaglyph stereoscopic 3D images."

The work was originally presented in the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference during the 2013 IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging symposium in Burlingame, California, USA.
