Download Popular Mechanics' Used-Car Checklist iPhone App for Free

The Popular Mechanics Used-Car Checklist iPhone app is now available in Apple?s App Store. It's free, and it's interesting. Car enthusiasts should check it out, whether you're in the market for a new ride or not. But it's especially handy for car novices looking for solid advice on how to tell a good buy from a money pit.

The Used-Car Checklist leads the user through an inspection of a car, looking for mechanical trouble. We cover everything from signs of water damage to the right way to do a test drive. You answer questions as you go, and the app keeps a tally of what you've seen. The result is a letter grade for the car?A through F?along with a summary of what you've found, photos you've shot, and notes you've taken.

This app is based on articles that Popular Mechanics has run in print and the expertise PopMech editors have built by buying and fixing up our own clunkers. We've broken the 101-question checklist into eight sections (Basics, Exterior, Interior, etc.), and ranked each question from highest priority to lowest priority. We've also included lots of expert tips to help shoppers make sense of what they're finding.

Go through the whole checklist and you can be sure you've seen, touched, listened to, and maybe smelled the entire car, helping you make an informed buying decision.

The Used-Car Checklist can store multiple cars. It also allows the user to email each vehicle summary to a knowledgeable friend or mechanic, for a second opinion. Check it out?again, it's free. Then let us know what you think?or what car you've bought. Happy hunting.
