NCAA Football 13 predicts Purdue?s season, Part 3

The last two seasons, I?ve enlisted an expert in the EA Sports game NCAA Football to play Purdue?s season in an effort to predict the record.

In 2010, the popular video game said the Boilermakers would finish 4-8. They finished 4-8. In 2011, one simulation predicted Purdue would post a 5-7 record. Coach Danny Hope?s team was 6-6 in the regular season and won the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

This year, we ran the simulation again but with a twist. Since Hope plans on playing multiple quarterbacks, we decided to play separate seasons featuring Caleb TerBush, Robert Marve and Rob Henry.

Earlier this week, the?game?was played with TerBush at quarterback and Marve at quarterback.

Up next, Henry?s season. Remember you could run the simulation 100 times and produced 100 different results. This was one attempt.

Purdue?s season under Henry, as predicted by NCAA Football 13:

? Purdue 45, Eastern Kentucky 0

? Notre Dame 44, Purdue 14

? Purdue 38, Eastern Michigan 20

? Marshall 28, Purdue 14

? Michigan 38, Purdue 18

? Wisconsin 49, Purdue 24

? Ohio State 45, Purdue 17

? Purdue 23, Purdue 12

? Penn State 20, Purdue 17

? Purdue 19, Iowa 15

? Illinois 31, Purdue 23

? Purdue 45, Indiana 7

Regular season: 5-7, 3-5 Big Ten

Season notes: Henry threw for nearly 2,300 yards but only nine touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The surprising stat was Henry rushed for only 642 yards and five touchdowns. ? The video game simulation clearly likes TerBush at quarterback and not ?Marve and Henry.

Millions of black holes spotted

A space telescope has added to its list of spectacular finds, spotting millions of supermassive black holes and blisteringly hot, "extreme" galaxies.

The finds, by US space agency Nasa's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (Wise), once lay obscured behind dust.

But Wise can see in wavelengths correlated with heat, seeing for the first time some of the brightest objects in the Universe.

The haul will help astronomers work out how galaxies and black holes form.

It is known that most large galaxies host black holes at their centres, sometimes feeding on nearby gas, dust and stars and sometimes spraying out enough energy to halt star formation altogether.

How the two evolve together has remained a mystery, and the Wise data are already yielding some surprises.

Wise gives astronomers what is currently a unique view on the cosmos, looking at wavelengths of light far beyond those we can see but giving information that we cannot get from wavelengths we can.

Black holes

  • These are regions of space where gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape
  • One way they can form is when huge stars collapse in on themselves
  • So-called supermassive black holes sit at the centres of galaxies, including the Milky Way

Among its other discoveries, in 2011 Wise spotted in a "Trojan" asteroid ahead of the Earth in its orbit.

But with the latest results, Wise has come into its own as an unparalleled black hole hunter.

"We've got the black holes cornered," said Daniel Stern of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), lead author of one of the three studies presented on Wednesday.

Dr Stern and his colleagues used the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (Nustar) space telescope to examine the X-rays coming out of the black hole candidates spotted by Wise, presenting their findings in a paper to appear in Astrophysical Journal.

"Wise is finding them across the full sky, while Nustar is giving us an entirely new look at their high-energy X-ray light and learning what makes them tick," he said.

The other two studies presented - one already published in Astrophysical journal and another yet to appear - focussed on extremely hot, bright galaxies that have until now remained hidden: hot dust-obscured galaxies, or hot-Dogs.

There are so far about 1,000 candidate galaxies, some of which can out-shine our Sun by a factor of 100 trillion.

"These dusty, cataclysmically forming galaxies are so rare Wise had to scan the entire sky to find them," said Peter Eisenhardt of JPL, lead author of the paper describing Wise's first hot-Dog find.

"We are also seeing evidence that these record-setters may have formed their black holes before the bulk of their stars. The 'eggs' may have come before the 'chickens'."

The data from the Wise mission are made publicly available so that scientists outside the collaboration can also carry out their own studies, so the future will hold a wealth of studies from these extreme and otherwise hidden corners of the Universe.

Clinton's Asia tour: Is North Korea capable of reform?

KCNA-KNS via AFP - Getty Images

This undated photo released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on July 27, 2012 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and his wife Ri Sol-Ju reacting after watching a performance by members of the Korean People's Internal Security Forces (KPISF) at Ponghwa Art Theatre in Pyongyang.

By Eric Baculinao, NBC News

BEIJING -- Change in North Korea, and its potential impact on American interests in the Asia-Pacific, is likely to be on the agenda when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets Chinese leaders next month on her region-wide tour.

Is the hermit kingdom, with its nuclear weapons program and a ?military-first policy? that prioritizes its 1.2 million-strong army, capable of social reform?

Or is the latest staged-managed imagery from Pyongyang?of a Swiss-educated young leader displaying a stylish wife, giving thumbs up to pop music and promising that the belt-tightening days are over?a sign of a new beginning for the impoverished and isolated nation?

The buzz about North Korea?s tantalizing hints of change has gained currency with the recent visit to China of Jang Song Thaek, the powerful uncle of the new North Korean leader Kim Jung Un, followed by reports that Kim himself is seeking to visit China next month.

China vowed greater support and investment in North Korea?s languishing China-style special economic zones, and urged Pyongyang to let ?market? principles guide its moribund economy.

But while signs are pointing to change in Pyongyang, North Korean propaganda was denouncing as ?hallucination? any talk of reform, denying that the new leadership is breaking with the past.

Ezra Klein describes the mystery surrounding a woman seen accompanying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and new reports that she is his wife, meaning the dictator is no longer on the singles market.

Authoritarian dictatorship
As a neighbor and ally, China is sensitive to any shift in Pyongyang?s policy directions that could impact China?s interests.? While Beijing provides Pyongyang with massive aid to prevent regime collapse that could cause regional instability, China is opposed to North Korea?s nuclear ambitions.

?I think it?s not possible for Pyongyang to sacrifice its military-first and nuclear arms policies, and that in turn will limit all possibilities for reform,? observed Zhang Liangui, China?s top scholar on North Korea who graduated from Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang.

?I am not optimistic about reform because Kim Jun Un alone cannot decide, it will be decided by North Korea?s political system which prioritizes the army,? said Zhang, a professor of international strategic research at China?s central school for training communist party officials.

?There is low probability of significant change,? said Daniel Pinkston, Seoul-based senior analyst of the International Crisis Group.

A file picture released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on December 28, 2011 shows Kim Jong-Un and his powerful uncle, Jang Song-Thaek, at the funeral of late leader Kim Jong-Il.

North Korea?s system is ?structurally set up as an authoritarian dictatorship?as long as the Kim family is in power it will be extraordinarily difficult to renounce the legacy of his father and grandfather,? Pinkston told NBC News, explaining his group?s latest report analyzing the barriers to reform in North Korea?s militarized society.

Ezra Klein describes the mystery surrounding a woman seen accompanying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and new reports that she is his wife, meaning the dictator is no longer on the singles market.

Preventing a Gadhafi-like fate
?As long as the Kim family regime is in power, they will not surrender nuclear weapons.? But I do not see why this is an obstacle for reforms,? argued Andrei Lankov, a Seoul-based Russian scholar on North Korea who also attended Kim Il Sung University.

?They will keep their nuclear devices, five or ten of them, for the deterrence purposes, just to make sure that they will not suffer the sorry state of Colonel [Moammar] Gadhaf i?while reforming the country if they consider that reform suit their interest,? he told NBC News.

Lankov noted, however, the??destabilizing? effects of reform. ?Sadly, the conservatives might be correct and I will not be surprised if the reforms will bring about a sudden collapse of the North Korean state,? he said, alluding to the examples of East Germany and Tunisia.

?It is still possible to take steps toward the market without giving up the nuclear program, though you would have to limit military spending,? according to Daniel Sneider, associate director for research at the Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University.

But for Sneider, one issue is the challenge posed to Pyongyang?s legitimacy by South Korea. North Korea used to be more prosperous than the South due to pampering by China and the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.? But now, the North?s economy is barely three percent of the South?s, with half the population. The majority of North Koreans suffer from food shortages, according to UN reports.

?In the South, there is a wonderful example of a highly successful Korean market economy?the North claims to be morally superior and a purer Korean state, unpolluted by Western capitalism.? If they go down the road of market reform, that undermines a central plank of North Korean ideology,? Sneider said.

?The path of reform will be chosen by North Korea but China will certainly provide help,? said Lu Chao, director of North Korea Studies at the Academy of Social Sciences in Liaoning province, which shares a long border with North Korea.

Limited risk
Lu, who frequently meets with North Korean officials and businessmen from across the border, detects Pyongyang?s new focus on the economy.

?Kim Jung Un is focused on improving the quality of life, this can be seen in his visits to parks and artistic performances, in contrast with his father who prioritized the military,? Lu told NBC News.

At least 169 deaths have been reported in North Korea during the past two months as flooding continues to cover thousands of acres of farmland. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

?Some reforms are going on in the country, especially in agriculture,? he added, noting that farming reforms will pose ?limited risks? to the regime.

For the International Crisis Group?s Pinkston, US policy should remain ?deterrence and containment while being observant?.??

?The US should monitor, bilaterally and multilaterally, the situation in North Korea, maintain a strong deterrence and containment posture, but be willing, when the opportunity presents itself,? to engage North Korea if it changes its policy directions,? Pinkston said.

Clinton is scheduled to visit China Sept 4-5, before becoming the?highest-ranking US official to visit East Timor, which gained independence from Indonesia in 2002.

She will later visit the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vladivostok, eastern Russia.

NBC researchers Tianzhou Ye and Lorraine Liu contributed to this report.?

BWCC News: AACC to Unveil New Corporate Sales Training at Oct ...

Most businesses need employees with strong sales skills to compete in today?s economy. Learn how your company can boost performance by increasing sales skills through the latest corporate training offered by the Center for Workforce Solutions (CWS) at an executive briefing, ?Sales Force Effectiveness,? at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) at Arundel Mills, 7009 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover.

At the briefing, AACC?s new president, Dr. Dawn Lindsay, and CWS will unveil ?Advanced Sales and Management Training,? which is available through the CWS partnership with Global Corporate College (GCC) and Growth Development Associates (GDA). GDA President Eric Richardson will provide an overview of the ways this training helps businesses achieve performance goals and increase revenue. Topics include maximizing revenue and profitability, building powerful relationships with customers that result in increased market share and growing business by protecting and leveraging a company?s customer base.

?Nearly 25 percent of all jobs currently advertised on Monster.com are for positions in sales,? said Laura E. Weidner, Ph.D., dean of workforce development at AACC. ?Having strong sales skills can not only help people land jobs, but also gives employers an edge by having a well-trained sales staff. ? Even if a person is not in a sales position, most of us need sales skills to be successful.?

Weidner said her staff took the training and are already realizing the benefits. ?Whether a company?s sales force is comprised of 4,000 or just one, everyone who enrolls in this training will see the benefits almost immediately,? she said.

In addition to the briefing, Richardson will be available on both Oct. 2 and 3 to meet personally with companies to identify how AACC and the GDA curriculum can effectively meet the needs of their sales force. GDA has a 23-year track record of helping organizations from American Express to Apple computers achieve record-level growth by using its ?Advanced Sales and Management Training.?

Those planning to attend the executive briefing also will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Lindsay, who has a proven history of facilitating successful corporate partnerships to meet the needs of the business community. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

To reserve a space at this free event, visit www.aacc.edu/cws/salestraining or contact Rachel Ryckman from AACC at 410-777-2040 or reryckman@aacc.edu.

Russian Guy Pulls Total Dick Moves, Gets Chased a Lot

This video montage of a Russian guy pulling pranks on unsuspecting people is making the online rounds this week. Some of his stunts are pretty hilarious, while some are just mean and others are a bizarre combination of the two.

It's okay to laugh, but also feel somewhat bad, right?

Also funny? The default reaction to being victimized by a practical joke in Russia is apparently to charge the assailant at full-speed. Take a look:

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympics have Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern games. The Paralympics have Sir Ludwig Guttmann.

Guttmann, a Jewish neurosurgeon who fled Nazi Germany, pioneered athletic competition as therapy for patients with spinal injuries and organized an archery competition for 16 patients at Britain's Stoke Mandeville hospital in 1948. From this humble start have come the Paralympic Games, which this week will bring more than 4,000 athletes from around the world to London.

"The Guttmann story is massive," said Olympic historian Martin Polley. "He was the one who linked rehab to competitive sport."

This month has been Guttmann's moment, what with a BBC film about his life, "The Best of Men," an exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London and his daughter, Eve Loeffler, being named mayor of the athletes village ? a sort of ambassador in chief who welcomes the participants for games that start Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

It follows a resurgence of interest in Guttmann, who escaped in the late 1930s and settled in Britain, where his research on treating spinal patients drew the attention of the government. Guttmann began working with injured soldiers at Stoke Mandeville hospital, just north of London, during World War II ? a time when suffering a spinal injury was considered a death sentence. Patients were discouraged from moving, leading to secondary infections from bed sores or from pneumonia.

Known for an authoritarian streak and his stubborn insistence on changing the status quo, Guttmann swept into the hospital and took patients off sedation, which had been administered to make them comfortable. But Guttmann was having none of that. No one was going to be comfortable.

"One patient told me 'I'm waiting for God almighty to take me up," the Times of London reported Guttmann as saying at a conference in 1962. "I told him 'While you are waiting, you can do some work'."

He made the patients sit up and work muscles. Seeking to keep them motivated, he hit upon competition as a way to make them work harder. He tried wheelchair field hockey, but when that became too violent, he got the patients involved in wheelchair basketball, Loeffler said.

It was tough and demanding, but grateful patients nicknamed him "Poppa." They were still paralyzed. But many lived ? and carried out Guttmann's wish that they become taxpayers.

Loeffler said her father was marked by his past. Many of his relatives perished in Auschwitz. He was driven, intent to give back to the country that had given his family refuge.

"I think that's another thing that made him work so hard," she said. "He was Hitler's gift to this country in a way, and he was determined to be a good British citizen."

On the same day that London opened its 1948 Olympics, Guttmann organized a competition for wheelchair athletes, which he called the Stoke Mandeville Games. They involved 16 patients taking part in archery. From those humble origins, the Paralympics have grown into a festival of sport involving 4,200 athletes from 166 teams. Though smaller than the Olympics ? which had more than twice the number of athletes ? London's event represents the largest field ever for the games.

The London event ? the first to have come as a result of a joint bid from the host city ? have also benefited from greater integration with the Olympics, particularly in terms of marketing and organization. London essentially connected the rings to the Agitos, the Paralympic symbol of three circling arcs ? a move that helped also spread the fairy dust of attention that the Olympics receive to the Paralympics as well. Queen Elizabeth II agreed to open the event, a reflection of their importance to the country.

Some 2.3 million tickets have been sold, the most ever, many to Britons new to Paralympic sport but who wanted to get an opportunity to see the glittering new stadiums and experience the excitement of first class sporting competition.

Britain's team is also strong. They were second in the Paralympic table at Beijing with 102 total medals, including 42 gold. The hometown crowd wants to see their athletes ? and of course wants to see them win.

Loeffler believes her father's vision has come to pass. And when she wanders the village, people recognize her, like Canadian athlete Jessica Vliegenthart, who saw Loeffler having her photograph taken in a smart navy jacket with its massive circular gold badge.

"Aren't you the daughter of ..." Vliegenthart asked, as two wheelchair basketball athletes drew their wheels in.

Loeffler nodded, her pride clear. Her father dreamed of an "Olympic Games for disabled men and women," and now a whole new generation is learning about him.

"Who but he could have imagined that it would have happened," she said. "I don't think anybody else could."

Britain embraced Guttmann, giving him a knighthood in 1966 and making him a fellow of the Royal Society ? honors of which he was extremely proud. Though he died in 1980, he lived long enough to see the Paralympics grow. The first full scale games took place in Rome in 1960, and souvenirs from the 1964 Tokyo Paralympics are part of the collection on display at the Jewish Museum.

"I just couldn't be more proud of him," Loeffler said. "I just hope he's up there watching it all."

Do You Need New Ductwork? - Carini Heating and Air Conditioning

EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA-Saving money on energy costs could be as simple as sealing ductwork throughout your home or business.

When ducts are well-designed they keep your home cool in the summer and warm in winter, improve indoor air quality by minimizing pollutants and allergens in the air, and help you conserve energy and money on utility bills.

?If you have leaky or poorly designed ductwork, you are wasting money on utility bills and could be compromising your family?s comfort and health,? says Gabriel Carini, an El Cajon air conditioning and heating expert.

The telltale signs of bad ductwork are rooms with drastic temperature variations-hard to keep cool in summer and too cold in winter, chemical smells infiltrating the indoor air, excessive dust, stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable and steadily rising utility bills. If you notice any or all of these, it is probably in your best interest to have the duct system examined for leaks, blockages or poor design.

?Duct systems that are efficient and well-designed will distribute air properly throughout your home without leaking, keeping all of the rooms at a comfortable temperature,? says Carini, a Lakeside cooling and heating provider of more than a decade.

The most common culprits are leaky, torn, and disconnected ducts, poorly sealed registers and grills, leaks at furnace and filter slot, and kinks in flexible ductwork restricting airflow. Some ducts are installed in dropped ceilings, in corners of rooms, into the attic or built into raised floors, but they should always be well-sealed regardless of where they are.

Average Californians use 30 percent of their total energy usage for heating and cooling their homes, according to the California Energy Commission, and they estimate that 30 percent of that conditioned air goes to waste due to leaks or poorly designed ductwork.

?This one improvement can yield substantial rewards, both in comfort and reduced energy bills, without a large upfront cost. By sealing duct leaks, a homeowner can save 10 to 20 percent of the energy required to heat and cool a home,? Carini says.

There are other simple and effective ways to improve and maintain the HVAC system and keep the home cooler. Insulation for any un-insulated ductwork is a good first step but also keep furniture and other objects from blocking the air flow through registers, change filters regularly and vacuum or dust registers to remove any dust buildup.

Schedule an appointment with a La Mesa air conditioning repair and service technician from Carini Heating and Air Conditioning to find out if your home has leaky ductwork and how you can benefit from sealing or reconfiguring it.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Shopping Considerations | Auto Magazine

Hybrid vehicles continue to grow in importance, offering consumers the best of two possible worlds: vehicle electrification and extended range. By making use of electric motors and a gasoline engine, a hybrid electric vehicle ensures that you can take that long trip without having to plug-in someplace and wait hours for a recharge.

The Toyota Prius is synonymous with "hybrid," but there are other models for you to consider. Read on for tips on how to buy a hybrid electric vehicle, representing one of the most fuel efficient and cleanest car segments sold today.

General Definitions

What is a hybrid vehicle? Well, for starters, it is officially called a hybrid electric vehicle, one of several types of vehicles that offer at least some kind of vehicle electrification.

All hybrids make use of two fuel systems. Today, those systems are a gas-powered internal combustion engine and electric motors. The gas engine is paired with a transmission to turn the wheels. The electric motor may make use of a generator and regenerative braking to produce electricity that is sent to and stored in a battery system. Such systems original used nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, but in recent years most manufacturers have switched to lithium-ion (li-ion) or lithium-polymer (li-poly) batteries that are lighter weight and more efficient.

Plug-in or Not

Traditional hybrid vehicles receive electricity onboard, with no need to plug-in to an outlet to draw current. Today, your hybrid vehicle options have expanded as there are models that can be plugged in. Models, including the Chevrolet Volt, the Ford C-MAX Energi and the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, do plug in and offer an advantage of running on electric-only power longer than traditional hybrids. If your trips are mostly local, you?ll put some serious space between gas station visits, lowering your fuel costs and reducing the amount of emissions dumped into the air.

Another advantage of a plug-in vehicle is that there are tax deduction benefits offered, something that traditional hybrids no longer have. Your tax benefit is determined by the federal government and depends largely on the vehicle you select as well as your tax bracket. Buy a Chevrolet Volt and you may be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit; with the PHEV Prius, your tax benefit is up to $2,500. State and local benefits may also be available.

Cost Premium

When buying a hybrid, you?ll pay more for this vehicle then you would for a comparably equipped gasoline model. The difference is typically from $3,000, but you may notice cars that are priced at least $5,000 higher. What you need to do here is compare equipment levels. For instance, the Ford Fusion Hybrid comes in about $8,000 more than the base Fusion model. On closer inspection the difference is about $2,500 as the Fusion Hybrid offers a trim level comparable to the Fusion SEL.

With a cost premium in play, you?ll want to determine how long it will take for you to recoup the extra cost. One way to figure that out is to compare the fuel economy between like models. The example of the Ford Fusion is a good one ? the 2012 edition gets 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway for a combined 26 mpg. The Fusion Hybrid gets 41 mpg city, 36 mpg for a combined 39 mpg. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, then your gas cost at $3.50 per gallon would be calculated as follows:

15,000 miles divided by 26 mpg equals 577 gallons. Multiply 577 by $3.50 per gallon and your annual fuel costs are $2,020.

With the Fusion Hybrid you?ll divide 15,000 by 39 and get 385 gallons. Multiply 385 by $3.50 and your annual fuel costs are $1,348. That means you?ll save $672 per year. If your hybrid has a $5,000 price premium than it will take you nearly 7 and one-half years to recoup your cost. Clearly, buy a hybrid if you expect to keep it at least that long and you think that gas prices will only go higher.

What Size

Most hybrid models come in smaller sizes, but there are some vehicles such as the full-size Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and the big Lexus LS 600h L sedan that are also sold. Familiarize yourself with the various models offered and consider only those that meet your needs.

Some hybrid models lose as much as 20 percent of trunk storage capacity as the battery pack juts into the trunk. Other hybrids take away rear seating space for the same reason.

Most hybrids are paired with a single-speed transmission, although some have regular automatic or continuously variable transmissions. You will want to test drive the models that interest you, taking it out on the open road and driving it extensively around town. Learn if the power offered is sufficient for your needs ? hybrids get horsepower from both energy sources, therefore you won?t lack the get up and go to get moving with such vehicles.

HEV Considerations

Every hybrid vehicle comes with a hybrid warranty, covering the electrical parts including motors, generators and battery packs. By law, the minimum warranty for the battery system alone is 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some states, such as California and New Jersey, mandate a 10-year or 150,000 mile warranty. In any case, familiarize yourself with the maintenance procedures for a hybrid and follow these carefully, to ensure that you enjoy the maximum benefit of owning one.

Petaluma Little League Team Loses World Series In Extra Innings

Patch:

To explain how Tennessee advanced to Little League World Series Championship game with a 24-16 victory over Petaluma National Little League on Saturday in South Williamsport, Pa. is simpler than it seems.

Petaluma almost got single-handedly ten-run ruled by Tennessee?s Lorenzo Butler in the first six innings of Saturday?s U.S. Championship game. Butler?s three three-run home runs for Tennessee broke the Little League World Series record for most RBIs in a game with nine, and gave his team a 15-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Q poll: Obama lead narrows in Florida after Ryan ?micro-bump? for Romney; Nelson leads Mack

by George Bennett | August 23rd, 2012

The newest Quinnipiac University poll shows President Obama holding a 49-to-46 percent lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters in Florida ? down from a 6-point Obama lead in the state three weeks ago.

Quinnipiac attributes Romney?s modest gain to a ?micro-bump? from naming Paul Ryan as his running mate.

The poll, conducted Aug. 15-21 with a 2.8 percent margin of error, is sure to continue the debate over Quinnipiac?s voter sample. In the latest survey, 34 percent of voters identified themselves as Democrats and 28 percent as Republicans. That compares to actual 2008 Florida turnout that was 37 percent Democratic and 34 percent Republican, according to exit polls.

Republicans have accused Quinnipiac of oversampling Democrats in its last few polls; Democrats aired similar complaints in May when Quinnipiac?s sample was 34 percent Republican and 31 percent Democrat and Romney had a 6-point lead.

Ryan is viewed favorably by 35 percent and unfavorably by 29 percent of Florida voters in the new poll. Vice President Joe Biden, by comparison, is viewed favorably by 37 percent and unfavorably by 44 percent.

The new poll also gives Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson a 50-to-41 percent lead over Republican Rep. Connie Mack. And it continues Gov. Rick Scott?s streak of underwater approval ratings, with 41 percent approving of the governor?s job performance and 47 percent disapproving. Scott?s approval/disapproval score was 36/52 in Quinnipiac?s Aug. 1 poll.

8 worst Windows 8 annoyances; how to fix them

19 hrs.

All new?operating systems have a learning curve, but due to its unique blend of new and old interfaces, Windows 8?s is particularly steep. Whether it?s a menu system that forces you change screens to launch an app or a pair of dueling control panels that each contain different settings, you often have to work harder to perform the same tasks as in Windows 7. Though you can?t solve all these issues on your own ? the Start button is gone for good ? you can make the most of Windows 8 with these tips.

1. No more Start menu

Multitasking in Windows 8 is like dating Sybil. Because there's no more Start menu, users are encouraged to leave the desktop environment and go to the Modern UI Start screen, just to launch other desktop apps that take you right back to the desktop. Not only does switching screens take more time than simply launching a menu, it takes you out of context by pushing your work in the first application off-screen, making it easy to lose track of what you were doing.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid going through the Start screen to launch desktop apps. You can install a third-party Start menu, create keyboard shortcuts or pin applications to the taskbar.

Read More: How to Launch Apps from The Desktop in Windows 8

2. Switcher Groups All Desktop Apps Into Just One Thumbnail

If?you want proof that desktop applications are second-class citizens in Windows 8, look no further than the Switcher menu where you'll find separate thumbnails for all of your open Windows 8 applications. The entire desktop gets just one thumbnail, though, no matter how many different programs are running on it.

if you want to find to a program that's running on the desktop, you must navigate from the Switcher menu back to the desktop and look at the windows or taskbar there, a huge waste of time and mental energy.

The good news is that you can switch between all of your tasks using the good old-fashioned ALT Tab key combination. Also, if you dock the desktop next to your primary app in the Metro UI, you'll see a list of tiles representing all of your open desktop apps.

3. You Must Slide Away the Lock Screen Before Logging In

Sometimes it seems like Windows 8 was designed to make orthopedists rich, because the new OS asks PC users to perform so many unnecessary clicks and mouse gestures. The most blatant waste of time and muscle movement is caused by the cutesy lock screen that you must close by either dragging it offscreen or clicking on it (the faster method) every time you boot or wake your computer.

Tablet users may like to see the weather and time when their devices are inactive, but on PCs, the display is nothing more than a giant roadblock that stands between you and your login prompt.

Fortunately, you can make the lock screen disappear permanently. Just enable the "Do not display lock screen" setting in the under Computer Configuration > Administrative Tools > Control Panel > Personalization in the Local Group Policy editor.

Read More: How to Disable the Windows 8 Lock Screen: Step-by-Step

4. The Power Button is One Gesture and Three Clicks Away

Since Microsoft designed Windows 8 with the world of always-on tablets in mind, the company thinks you'll need to shut down and restart so rarely that these functions are buried in the menu structure. In Windows 7, the Shut Down button is displayed prominently on the Start menu, whereas in Windows 8, the suggested method is to pull out the Charms menu, click the Settings charm, click the Power button and then select Shut Down from a menu.

If you don't have time and shoulder muscles to waste, you can create your own shortcuts for both the Shut Down and Restart functions. Just assign the shortcuts to the command-line commands "shutdown /s /t 0" (shutdown) and "shutdown /r /t 0" (restart), respectively. Be sure to pin these shortcuts to the Start screen and taskbar for easy access.

5. Windows Mail Doesn't Support POP Accounts

Many ISPs give users POP email accounts, but Windows 8's built-in mail app not only doesn't support POP connections, it actively disses POP users. The first time you open Windows Mail, if the program doesn't recognize your login email address as Outlook or Hotmail.com, it asks you if that address is POP, IMAP or Exchange. If you select POP, it rudely tells you that Mail doesn't support POP3 accounts and that you should get an IMAP or Exchange account instead.

You can, of course, use a different mail client, but if you want to stick with Windows Mail there's a simple solution. Set up your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Gmail account to check your POP mail and then add that account to Windows Mail. In Outlook.com, the option to send/receive mail from a POP account is listed under the More Mail Settings menu.

6. Secondary Users Cannot Install Applications

One of Windows 8's selling points is its ability to handle multiple users. However, when you add users to your Windows 8 device, by default they aren't given permission to install desktop software on their own. Though they can install Windows 8 Metro-style apps to their heart's content, secondary users are asked for an administrator's password as soon as they launch a desktop installer.

Even after an administrator enters his or her password, Windows 8 installs the program but, in our experience, fails to put a shortcut on the secondary user's desktop, on the Start screen or on the All Apps menu. The only way for the secondary user to launch his new app is to find its .exe file in the Program Files folder and create a shortcut from that. Don't try that at home.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to grant administrative privileges to a secondary user, provided that you know which menu to use. After adding a user in the PC settings menu, go into the desktop control panel and click Manage Another Account, select the name of the new account and then click Change Account Type and select Administrator from the menu.

7. Tablet Users Need to Enter the Desktop for Key Functions

Though Microsoft focused the Modern UI on touch, it still forces users back to the desktop for such basic operations as file management and controlling the screen resolution or the user permissions (see annoyance #6). So any time a tablet user attaches a USB flash drive and wants to copy files from it, he will need to use Windows Explorer on the desktop.

Microsoft should have made all of its built-in apps ?? especially Windows Explorer and Control Panel ?? work in Modern UI, but tablet users can address this problem by making the icons on their desktop as large and finger-friendly as possible. Simply right click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution, click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" and adjust as necessary.

8. ?Bing Search App Opens Results in Another App

With its vibrant photographs of landscapes and its image-heavy tile results, Microsoft's built-in Bing Search app provides a more attractive interface for performing Web searches than you'll find elsewhere. Unfortunately, behind the attractive facade lurks a really annoying usability problem. When you see a result you like and click on it, the Bing app sends you to Internet Explorer to view the page.

Since both Bing and IE 10 run fullscreen, some users may not notice that they have switched apps, so they'll be really confused when they hit the back button in the browser, only to find out that it does not return them to the list of Bing results. To get back where they came from, users will have to switch back to the Bing app.

The easy way to avoid this problem is to pin the Bing (or Google) websites to your Start screen and use the browser, rather than the Bing app, for all your searching needs. If you feel compelled to use the dedicated Bing app, you can dock it to the right so you can see your list of results on the side of the screen while Internet Explorer takes up most of the space.

Lance Armstrong takes part in bike race amid controversy

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? For a few hours, Lance Armstrong was back in his element ? on a bike and in a race.

No controversies, little fanfare.

The escape Saturday into the mountains around Aspen, Colo., comes a day after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disciplined Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and vacated his seven Tour de France titles after deciding he used performance-enhancing drugs.

There were only a handful of fans at the start of the Power of Four mountain bike competition, a 36-mile trek that includes plenty of climbing.

Asked if he was ready, Armstrong smiled and said, "I hope so. ... This is going to be hard for all of us."

Decked out in black and gold and sporting a Livestrong emblem on his jersey, Armstrong tinkered with his bike and gave a kiss to girlfriend Anna Hansen before pedaling off.

His busy weekend includes a marathon Sunday. He may be banned from cycling, but it hasn't diminished his passion for competition.

These weekend races may have to suffice.

Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.

USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour de France.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the International Cycling Union was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

Fans defended Armstrong on Twitter, insisting his work with Livestrong trumps what he accomplished on a bike. His success helped sell millions of "Livestrong" yellow plastic bracelets as he promoted cancer awareness and research. He's raised nearly $500 million since the Lance Armstrong Foundation started in 1997.

On Friday alone, the foundation said it received 400 donations that totaled around $75,000.

Researching the dream cure to insomnia

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? More than one third of people in the UK are likely to experience acute insomnia each year, say sleep experts at Northumbria University.

For the first time, researchers have identified the prevalence and incidence of acute insomnia ? sleep difficulties lasting three months or less ? providing new insights into how it develops and at what stage effective treatment should be started to prevent it developing into the longer term condition of chronic insomnia.

People are diagnosed as suffering with acute insomnia if they have had problems sleeping for less than three months, and chronic insomnia if the sleeping problems persist for longer. As chronic insomnia leads to an increased risk of developing major depression, researchers are seeking to find out more about how the transition from acute to chronic insomnia takes place in order to prevent this.

Dr Jason Ellis, Director of the Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research, worked with colleagues in the USA, Canada and Glasgow on a unique study that examined the sleep habits and patterns of both normal sleepers and those with acute insomnia.

The findings revealed that acute insomnia was widespread with almost nine per cent of the US sample and eight per cent of the UK sample suffering episodes of acute insomnia during the study period. It was also found that between 31.2% and 36.6% of the UK sample were likely to develop acute insomnia in a year. For the first time, the results also indicate the rate of transition from acute to chronic insomnia (21.43%), although this figure is higher if it is not the first episode of insomnia.

Dr Ellis said: ?This study provides the first prevalence and incidence data for acute insomnia. The results demonstrate that acute insomnia is highly prevalent and is a first step towards a systematic investigation of its natural history.

?The information our research has provided gives us a first indication of the scale and scope of the problem. Our next step will be to explore the factors that can cause or prevent the transition from acute to chronic insomnia.?

Jet-set young sun pushed baby planets off kilter

SOMETHING is amiss with the otherwise well-behaved planets in the solar system. They all line up with each other obediently enough, but their orbital plane is slightly offset from the sun's equator.

Now there is a clue to what caused this rebellious streak: it's possible the baby planets strayed while trying to keep up with their jet-setting parent.

Computer simulations show that asymmetrical jets on the young sun may have pushed it around in such a way that its family of planets became tilted.

Stars are thought to form out of collapsing clouds of gas and dust. The leftover material from star formation flattens out as it spins and clumps together to make planets. We would expect this disc to settle around the star's middle, so planets in our solar system ought to orbit in line with the sun's equator.

Planets around other stars have been found with wildly tilted orbits, or "obliquities". A favourite explanation is planet-on-planet violence, with bigger worlds tossing the smaller ones away and altering their own orbits.

In our backyard, though, the planets are tilted by just 6 degrees. This suggests that a gentler process must have been at work, says Fathi Namouni of the University of Nice in France. The answer may lie not in scattering planets, but in moving the sun.

Hubble observations in the past 10 years have revealed that young stars with planet-forming discs can shoot jets of material from their poles. Often one jet can carry up to twice as much material as the other. Whichever jet is stronger pushes on the star.

"It's like you're mounting a huge rocket on the star and accelerating it away from the disc," Namouni says. In trying to keep up with the moving star, the disc and any young planets can end up tilted, he says.

That can't be the whole story, though, says exoplanet expert Daniel Fabrycky of the University of California in Santa Cruz. The acceleration caused by the jets is so small - about a millionth of a metre per second squared - that the star would have to move in the same direction for a million years to create obliquity.

To complicate matters, stars' magnetic poles switch direction regularly, which means the more powerful jet would sometimes point in the opposite direction.

However, Namouni suggests that his model can still work if the young sun flipped its poles at the same rate as the bulk of the mass in the disc orbited.

He ran 2000 supercomputer simulations of the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, which hold most of the solar system's planetary mass, over the lifetime of the sun. In most cases, the simulations that included the asymmetric jets produced planets with a 6-degree tilt (arxiv.org/abs/1208.1432).

No one knows why star jets are asymmetrical, and several factors, such as the sun's polar flips, would have to be timed just right for Namouni's model to work. But Fabrycky says the idea has merit.

"I think it's a cool mechanism to generate obliquities," he says.

Blog Archive ? Criminal Law Winterville Attorney Walks Client ...

When I went to work in a small business office, I didn?t know enough to realize that things weren?t being handled properly. By the time I realized something was wrong, the police were investigating the business for serious irregularities and there were questions about my involvement. I was frightened and knew that I needed professional help. That is when I was referred to a criminal law Winterville firm.

The criminal law Winterville firm assigned an attorney to me. He listened careful to all I had to say. I didn?t try to hold anything back; I told him everything I knew. After hearing everything I had to say he told me to do two things. First, I was not to speak to anyone else about the situation at all no matter what. Second, I was not to worry. He told me he would work it all out so that I would end up being OK.

The following few months were some of the longest of my life. I met several more times with my attorney who coached me on my upcoming meeting with the police. He went with me to each meeting and helped me to know what to do. It was worth every penny I paid to ensure that I was able to go home when it was all over.

U.S. defends restrictions on Argentine lemons, beef

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday defended restrictions on imports of beef and lemons from Argentina after the South American country said it planned to challenge the measures at the World Trade Organization.

The defense came amid escalating tensions over Argentina's trade policies.

On Tuesday, the United States and Japan challenged Argentine government regulations that require prior approval of nearly all foreign purchases as a violation of WTO rules.

Argentina's Foreign Ministry did not comment directly on the U.S. and Japanese complaints but said it would file a complaint at the WTO over Washington's policies that hamper lemon and fresh beef imports.

"The United States is surprised and disappointed at Argentina's reaction," USTR spokeswoman Nkenge Harmon said.

"It appears to be part of a disturbing trend in which countries engaged in actions that are inconsistent with their WTO obligations retaliate with counter complaints rather than fix the underlying problem raised in the complaint," she added.

(AP) ? The chants of "Barry! Barry! Barry!" felt familiar. The reason sure was different.

At least for one night, Barry Zito was king in San Francisco.

Zito took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, Hector Sanchez's two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth and the Giants rolled past the Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win.

About the only mistake Zito made was insisting he felt fine to finish the game. After allowing consecutive singles to open the ninth, he had just two words for Giants manager Bruce Bochy when he came out to take the ball.

"He said, 'I'm sorry,'" Bochy recalled. "He felt horrible."

For the first 24 outs, he sure looked sharp.

Fresh off a sweep at the rival Los Angeles Dodgers, the NL West leaders stayed hot on a chilly and fog-filled night along the bay. Zito (10-8) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked three before Freddie Freeman's two-run double off reliever Jeremy Affeldt broke up the shutout.

With two runners on, Sergio Romo ? the third reliever of the inning ? got pinch-hitters Jason Heyward and Juan Francisco to ground out for his sixth save.

"It feels good to help the team," said Zito, left off the postseason roster during San Francisco's championship run two years ago. "We had a great road trip and we had a difficult homestand last time. So it was big momentum-wise to come out here and help the team."

Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a run to chase Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson (12-6) after 4 1-3 innings. Hanson gave up five hits and five runs while striking out four and walking three.

San Francisco has won nine of 12 to take a three-game lead over the Dodgers in the division.

"I don't feel like I went out there and got lit up," Hanson said. "It wasn't like they were hitting lasers all over the place. It was just a tough one."

Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the first. He walked in the third, stole his 21st base and slid home on Sandoval's two-out blooper to left to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

Pagan also walked leading off the fifth and Marco Scutaro singled to put runners on the corners. After Sandoval struck out, Pence pushed a bunt for an RBI single past Hanson to spark San Francisco's surge.

"I was as surprised as anybody," Bochy said.

Belt's hard grounder skipped off Freeman's glove at first for a two-base error, and Sanchez followed with a two-run double to push the Giants ahead 5-0.

More than enough for Zito on this night.

The high-priced lefty, often the sore in San Francisco's rotation, had hitters chasing his slow-moving breaking balls all over the strike zone ? and out of it, too. Zito also helped himself by fielding Hanson's comebacker cleanly with two runners on in the second and picking off Dan Uggla at first base in the fourth.

"He's left-handed and he frustrates us," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He throws that fastball just above the strike zone and spins the curve. We did not have a good approach against him early. We weren't very good. I don't know if it was Barry being dominant or us not being good. He's deceptive and he can be frustrating with that curve and change."

Fans chanted "Barry! Barry! Barry!" ? usually reserved for home run king Barry Bonds ? when Zito was announced at the plate with one out in the eighth. After he dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Brandon Crawford to second, the crowd gave him a standing ovation jogging back to the dugout.

Martin Prado and Chipper Jones singled leading off the ninth to dash Zito's shot at a complete game. Freeman hit a two-run double off Affeldt for Atlanta's only runs, and Uggla walked. Javier Lopez ? San Francisco's third lefty ? struck out Brian McCann before Romo, a righty, came on to end it.

Zito, the 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland, last pitched a complete game in his first start of the season at Colorado on April 8, when he allowed four hits in a 7-0 win.

NOTES: Giants All-Star C Buster Posey sat out for the second straight game because of tightness in his right hamstring. Asked if he would play Friday, Posey said, "I don't see any reason why not." ... Heyward was not in the starting lineup with fellow left-hander Zito starting. ... The Giants honored retiring Braves 3B Chipper Jones with a video montage before the game. He received a standing ovation from fans and tipped his hat to the crowd from the dugout's top step. ... Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong (10-7, 2.85 ERA) starts opposite Braves RHP Ben Sheets (4-3, 3.07 ERA) on Friday.
