According to the Inter-parliamentary Union, Morocco ranks 81th worldwide in terms of the representation of women in the parliament.
Women represent 17 percent in the lower house of the parliament, and as low as 2?percent in the upper house. The list is topped by Rwanda where female representative occupy 56, 3?percent of MP?s followed by Andorra with 50?percent and Cuba with 45,2 percent.
Within the Arab world, Morocco ranks in sixth position after Algeria which ranks 28th on the list, Tunisia (38th), Iraq (43), Sudan (46), and the United Arab Emirates (78).
Among Western democracies, only seven countries made it into the top 20.
Sweden which ranks in fourth position on the list with women representing 44,7?percent of MP?s, tops the list followed by Finland in 7th position (42%), Iceland in the 10th position (39, 7%), Norway in the 11th position (39, 6%), Denmark in the 13th position (39,1), the Netherlands in the 14th position (38,7 %), Belgium in the 17th position (38%) and Spain in the 20th position with 36 percent.
Among the big players in Europe, Germany ranks 24th with 32, 9 percent, France 37th with 26, 9 percent, the United Kingdom 57 (22,5 %), while the United States ranks 77th with women representing 18% of the total of congressmen.
Established in 1889 and headquartered in Switzerland, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the international organization of parliaments. It has observer status with the United Nations General Assembly. It shares the same objectives of the UN, namely the promotion of dialogue, peace and the establishment of representative democracies around the world.
