For a second time this year, Governor Christie vetoed a bill that would have set up a state-run health insurance exchange.
He still did not formally announce, though, whether New Jersey will run the exchange in partnership with the federal government or leave it entirely to Washington. He also reserved the right to set up a state-run exchange in the future.
The governor spent much of the day in Washington yesterday meeting with President Obama and congressional leaders to lobby for more superstorm Sandy relief money.
Neither Christie nor the officials he met with would talk about their discussions.
NJ Transit officials were also in Washington yesterday, where they continued to defend their decision to store their rail fleet at two locations that flooded during superstorm Sandy. They said they had no other choice.
All told, agency officials said yesterday, NJ Transit it suffered more than $400 million from the storm surge and Sandy?s powerful winds.
Christie had to hustle from Washington up to New York yesterday afternoon to tape an interview for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In the show, which aired on Comedy Central last night, the governor described his ?man hug? with Bruce Springsteen and talked about the devastation on the shore after Sandy.
The New Jersey Legislature held several hearings yesterday to examine several ?areas where there may have been problems with the response to superstorm Sandy.
At one hearing,?Assemblyman Upendra J. Chivakula questioned whether the state Board of Public Utilities?had done enough to improve utility service reliability in advance of the storm. And at another hearing, insurance company representatives acknowledged widespread confusion among consumers over what their insurance plans do or do not cover.
