Atlantic football coach Chris Bean resigns

After a trying but promising season at Atlantic High, Chris Bean says he has retired from coaching.

Bean informed The Post of his decision the morning after Atlantic?s 13-7 loss to Lauderdale Lakes-Boyd Anderson in the Class 7A regional quarterfinals, but he had kept the move quiet for six weeks ? Bean gave his resignation to Atlantic principal Anthony Lockhart after his team?s 40-0 win over West Boca Raton on Oct. 5.

Despite leading the perpetually talented, often-disappointing Eagles (8-3) to a surprise District 13-7A title, Bean said it?s ?time for me to move on.?

Bean, a 45-year-old Delray Beach native, graduated from Atlantic in 1986 and played defensive back at Bethune-Cookman. He was Atlantic?s head coach from 2003-05 and returned in 2010, following the arrest of then-head coach Andre Thaddies, who was later cleared of charges.

When he was re-hired in 2010, Bean said he ?wasn?t for sure how long I was going to stay. I was basically doing a favor for the principal, coming in and getting the program back on track. That was my focal point.?

Bean, who said he accepted a job as the Director of Athletics at Pompey Park in Delray Beach, went 21-11 over the last three seasons. He went 20-10 as Atlantic?s head coach from 2003-05, making the playoffs in each year.

It?s unclear who will be Atlantic?s next head coach. Atlantic principal Anthony Lockhart could not immediately be reached for comment.

In Bean?s final season, the Eagles started 2-2 with losses to American Heritage and Santaluces, then reeled off six straight wins and the program?s first district title since 2008 before the first-round exit. They also made national headlines for wearing these.

?You had some ups and some downs, but you hope some young men listened to the message that was given by the coaching staff that was trying to make them better people,? Bean said. ?For the most part, that was done.?
