On Friday, November 16, 2012 all full-time and regular part-time dispatchers, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and casino security officers voted to unionize with the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America SPFPA, the largest, oldest and fastest growing 9(b)(3) security police union in the world today.
Back on August 28, 2012, - 1,050 Horseshoe employees voted to join the Cleveland Casino Workers Council a union umbrella group made up of the United Auto Workers, the United Steelworkers, the Teamsters and UNITE Here.
While the Horseshoe casino management welcomed union representation for its 1,050 Horseshoe employees under the Cleveland Casino Workers Council without resistance, citing: ?Our position is one of neutrality? and ? We?re looking forward to having a healthy relationship with the union representatives? stated Christina Karas spokesperson for Horseshoe Casino in a Cleveland (AP) news article, the dispatchers, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and casino security officers working for Horseshoe casino faced a barrage of union-busting fear and intimidation tactics over a 2 and a half month period in their uphill fight to unionize with the SPFPA. This included litigation over the unit description by Jackson Lewis before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), mandatory Union-Busting fear and intimidation meetings, and threats by horseshoe management representatives indicating that electing to unionize with the SPFPA would be futile as the Employer would not agree to a collective bargaining agreement and would delay the process indefinitely. During the final days leading up to the election, at least seven Horseshoe casino officers, many of them union supporters were either fired, or quit just before the upcoming vote on Friday November 16th.
?In a last ditch effort to suppress the vote Horseshoe casino management challenged every EMT employee who came to vote in this NLRB election? stated Steve Maritas SPFPA Organizing Director.
After a protest by the Union demanding this was just another union-busting tactic to suppress the vote the NLRB Board Agent conducting the election disallowed management from challenging any of these EMT employees, ruling their votes will be commingled with all the other votes.
?In my opinion this union-busting move by Jackson Lewis backfired. Instead of suppressing the EMT?s from voting, the EMT?s rose up after being angered, giving the union a five (5) point swing vote victory of 44 to 35," stated Maritas.
