News deluge lifts Fox News, CNN ratings in August (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Fox remained on top of cable news in August, but a hurricane of news helped CNN edge MSNBC after trailing it for most of the year.

The onslaught of major stories -- the debt crisis, unrest across Northern Africa and parts of the Middle East, not to mention Hurricane Irene -- kept the channels busy, undermining the notion that August is a slow news period. CNN benefited in particular, as it does best when there is breaking news.

The network, which has languished in third behind its rival at 30 Rock for most of the year in prime time -- and even trailed Headline News in July thanks to Casey Anthony coverage -- took second place for the month in both prime time and total day numbers.

It drew 723,000 viewers in prime time, an average of 9,000 more than MSNBC. CNN's advantage was slightly larger in the demo, where it drew 242,000 as compared to MSNBC's 227,000.

MSNBC also registered its weakest primetime numbers of the year, but did edge CNN in primetime if one only looks at Monday-Friday numbers. By that tally, MSNBC outdrew CNN 815,000 to 708,000. MSNBC's ratings suffer more than its competitors over the weekend as documentary series like "Lockup" dominate its programing slate. That is why the network has begun the process of altering its weekend formula with shows like that of Chris Hayes.

Fox's reign atop the cable news world continued unimpeded as the network attracted more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined in both prime time and total day. An average of almost 2 million viewers tuned in during prime time, with 484,000 coming from the adults 25-54 demographic. Compared to August of 2010, Fox was up 11 percent in the demo in primetime and 17 percent in total day.

In what was its second best month of the year, FNC also ranked third in all of cable in prime time and boasted the 13 highest-rated shows in cable news. In the 25-54 demo, Fox's dominance was not quite as great, but because it only claimed the top 10 programs.

Gaddafi stronghold under threat from air and land (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? NATO warplanes bombed Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte on Sunday as forces opposed to the fallen strongman closed in on his last major bastion of support.

The fugitive Gaddafi's exact whereabouts where still not known and it was possible he was still in hiding in Tripoli five days after it fell to rebel forces and his 42-year-old reign collapsed.

In the capital, the rebel leadership sought to establish control after days of confusion and sporadic skirmishing with the remnants of Gaddafi's forces.

But the stench of rotting bodies and burning garbage still hung over the city and food, water and other supplies were running short, indications that despite the euphoria of victory, plenty of challenges lay ahead.

A NATO spokesman in Brussels said that foreign warplanes -- which have played a crucial role in backing the rebels during the six-month civil war -- had struck at Sirte over the past three days including Sunday.

"We're paying close attention to what's happening in Sirte because we know that there are remnants of the regime that are there," he said.

Libyan forces also closed in Sirte, Gaddafi's birthplace, from the ground and said they would seize it by force if negotiations for its surrender failed.

One commander said his forces were within 100 km (60 miles) of Sirte from the east and others were advancing from the west.

Reuters reporter Maria Golovnina, traveling east from Tripoli along the coastal highway, saw tank transporters carrying Soviet-designed T-55 tanks in the direction of Sirte.

Rebels in Misrata, about 250 km west of Sirte, said they had seized about 150 brand new Gaddafi tanks from an abandoned military base in Zlitan and were preparing to deploy them if Gaddafi supporters in Sirte did not surrender.

Jamal Tunally, a rebel military commander in Misrata, told Reuters: "The front line is 30 km from Sirte. We think the Sirte situation will be resolved peacefully, God willing."

"Now we just need to find Gaddafi. I think he is still hiding underneath Bab al-Aziziyah like a rat," said Tunally, referring to Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli which was overrun by rebels on Tuesday.

Colonel Ahmed Bani, military spokesman of the National Transitional Council (NTC) in the eastern city of Benghazi, said the negotiations over Sirte would go on as long as necessary but either way it would liberated in "a matter of days."

Gaddafi, 69, is on the run and the fear among his foes is that he intends to lead an insurgency against them.

NTC officials also rejected any idea of talks with Gaddafi, saying he was a criminal who must be brought to justice.

"We did not negotiate when we were weak, and we won't negotiate now that we have liberated all of Libya," NTC information minister Mahmoud Shammam told a news conference.

The Associated Press earlier quoted Gaddafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, as saying Gaddafi was still in Libya and wanted to discuss forming a transitional government with the NTC.

NTC officials say Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and his spy chief should be tried in Libya, although they are wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

The NTC and its Western backers are acutely aware of the need to prevent Libya collapsing into the kind of chaos that plagued Iraq for years after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

The de facto government, whose leaders plan to move to Tripoli from Benghazi this week, is trying to impose security, restore basic services and revive the energy--based economy.

But in the aftermath of victory, many corpses have been found, some of slain Gaddafi soldiers, others the victims of killings in cold blood.

A Libyan official said 75 bodies had been found at the Abu Salim hospital, which was caught up in heavy fighting, and another 35 corpses were found at the Yurmuk hospital.

The possibility that rebel fighters executed captured Gaddafi soldiers would pose an image problem for the NTC.

Military spokesman Bani said there was concern for the fate of 40,000 prisoners who he said had been detained by Gaddafi's forces and who were still unaccounted for. It was possible some were being held in underground bunkers in Tripoli that rebels had so far been unable to locate, he said.

GOOD OMENS

In good omens for economic recovery, officials said a vital gas export pipeline to Europe had been repaired and Libya's biggest refinery had survived the war intact.

In the west, Tunisian authorities reopened the main border crossing into Libya, restoring a supply route for Tripoli, after Gaddafi forces were driven out on Friday.

That should help relieve a looming humanitarian crisis in the city, where food, drinking water and medicines are scarce.

Trucks loaded with food and other goods were already moving across the Ras Jdir crossing toward Tripoli, about two hours' drive away.

The streets of the capital were quiet after sporadic overnight gunfire and explosions in a city.

Some residents ventured out to hunt for water, food and fuel. And in Martyrs' Square, known as Green Square in the Gaddafi era, traffic police reappeared in crisp white uniforms, directing cars amid a sea of bullet casings.

"I came back to work on Friday. Life is beginning to come back to normal," said one policeman, Mahmoud al-Majbary, 49."

Tripoli residents queued for bread or scoured grocery shops for food. Many took a stoical view of their plight.

"This is a tax we pay for our freedom," said Sanusi Idhan, a lawyer waiting to buy food.

Aymen Mohammed poured water into plastic containers for his neighbors. "There are many people here who don't have water so we're filling the bottles from our well," he said.

The NTC issued messages urging electricity workers to get back to work and efforts to pay the salaries of public sector workers were underway.

The NTC hopes to gain access soon to hundreds of millions of dollars of Libyan assets frozen abroad. It also needs to get oil and gas revenue, normally 95 percent of exports, flowing again.

Bani said the gas pipeline to Europe had been repaired and gas woulod start flowing again soon, he said.

Libya's largest oil refinery at Ras Lanuf on the Mediterranean coast is intact despite fighting that had raged nearby and staff are preparing to restart operations at the 220,000 barrel per day plant, the general manager told Reuters.

(AP) ? A man accused of holding a schoolgirl captive for days in his basement before killing her and dumping her body in Michigan in 1967 will go on trial again, just weeks after jurors couldn't come up with a verdict in his first trial.

A judge on Monday said the second trial will begin Oct. 11.

Robert Bowman's first trial ended last week with jurors saying they had been unable to reach a unanimous decision following several weeks of testimony and 12 hours of deliberations.

Prosecutors charged Bowman, now 75, with murder in the four-decade-old killing after saying that new DNA evidence tied Bowman to the crime. He has pleaded not guilty and faces up to life in prison if he's convicted. He has remained in jail since his arrest three years ago.

Prosecutors and a defense attorney wouldn't comment after the hearing Monday because of a gag order in the case.

Both sides met behind closed doors with Lucas County Judge Gene Zmuda before the hearing. The judge said he expects jury selection to take longer this time because of the publicity during the first trial.

Prosecutors say Bowman snatched 14-year-old Eileen Adams, a high school freshman, after she got off a bus and sexually assaulted her before killing her. Her body was found in southern Michigan six weeks after she disappeared. She had been tied up with telephone and drapery cords and a nail had been driven into her head.

Adams was either strangled or died from a blow to the head that cracked her skull, prosecutors said.

During the trial, Bowman's ex-wife told jurors she had found the girl alive, naked and tied up in the basement after the girl disappeared just before Christmas 1967.

Margaret Bowman said she ran upstairs and her husband confronted her, saying he had to kill the girl. He also threatened to kill his wife and their newborn daughter if she told anyone, she said. That same night, she testified, Bowman made her go with him as he dumped the body.

Defense attorney Peter Rost tried to cast doubt on Margaret Bowman's account. He said she waited 14 years to tell her story to police and that she stayed with Bowman for 11 years and moved with him to three different states before leaving when his business failed.

Detectives first tried to link him to the slaying in the early '80s, when Margaret Bowman first came forward, but they said they didn't have enough evidence to bring charges until a cold case squad reopened the investigation five years ago.

Bowman had been a successful businessman before disappearing in the 1980s into a life on the streets in Florida and California. Police arrested him near Palm Springs, Calif., in 2008.

How to find Quick Weight Loss Diet For Safe and Rapid Weight Loss ...

Everyone wants to know what the best quick weight loss diet is. It?s hard to know what really works when we are constantly bombarded by all the advertisements for diets and diet pills that proclaim to be the answer to our problem. Losing weight fast doesn?t have to be expensive or leave you feeling hungry.

Do you think you have to fast or go on starvation diets to lose weight quickly? You absolutely do not have to suffer in order to achieve your weight loss goals. The best diet for losing weight quickly will consist of healthy foods, not special diet meals that are tasteless and leave you feeling deprived!

The truth about starvation diets is that they will actually make you gain weight over the long run. How? When you stop eating or eat very little, your metabolism stops. When that happens, your body doesn?t burn fat or calories, and gaining weight is the result. Know what foods to eat and how to eat them is the key to safe and effective weight loss.

The best quick weight loss diet will show you what foods burn fat, and how to combine them in a way that causes the most efficient fat burning. Some of the foods that are great for fast weight loss are lean proteins, calcium, and fruits and vegetable. Green tea also helps speed metabolism, as does drinking water.

Here is a fact that may surprise you: You don?t have to count calories or limit food portions to lose weight! Most people are used to literally starving to death and being miserable when attempting to lose weight. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS!

The best diet for quick weight loss is healthy and will help you keep the weight off for the rest of your life. Because it is so easy and you eat real foods, the chances of you gaining weight back are much less than on those other popular diets.

Are you ready to finally lose the weight for good, in a way that won?t make you feel like you are dieting? Find out about a few of the best programs available, and how they work to help you shed the pounds forever. Finding the best quick weight loss diet is essential to achieving your dream of being slim ? and staying that way! Review some of the best by visiting the links below.

Diets that promote rapid weight loss help you lose weight faster initially and are actually more beneficial than they are harmful. As you first start the diet you will lose weight quite rapidly since you will be expending a lot of water that has been held in your body by excess carbs and proteins. These rapid weight loss diets are very popular, but they are not permanent solutions to weight loss. Unless you change the way you eat and what you eat as well as keep up with a regular workout routine the results will only be temporary.

Some would suggest that this means that rapid weight loss diets ultimately do not work. Yet, to the contrary, they work very well but only when they are used properly. Anyone who misuses a rapid weight loss diet will soon realize that they can?t keep up with it forever and will soon give up and gain back all the weight the initially lost. To avoid this you must understand how a rapid weight loss diet actually fits into your overall weight loss agenda.

These types of diets are not meant to be followed for long periods of time. In fact, if you try to follow a rapid weight loss diet for very long your body will recognize the large energy deficit you have created in your body and will respond by lowering the metabolism all together. This results in a plateau in your diet where you simply stop losing weight and a major decrease in energy. Rapid weight loss diets are simply meant to jump start your weight loss and should be followed by a more reasonable, manageable diet that will help you keep the weight off.

While rapid weight loss diets work well on their own, they are much more beneficial when coupled with a regular workout regimen. Performing any vigorous activity for about thirty minutes a day three to five days a week will do the trick. However, if you haven?t followed a regular exercise program recently you?d be better off if you eased your way into it. Since you may be out of shape its safer not to push yourself too hard at first. And if you find the workouts too difficult you are much more likely to stop doing them.

You?ve likely heard someone say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, it?s true, and even more so for anyone looking to diet. The average obese person will skip breakfast all together which makes them hungrier later in the day and overeat to satisfy their self. As long as you eat three meals a day you will most likely not have to suffer any bouts with hunger. If you do find yourself eating more than you should at each meal it is a good idea to split your meals up into five. This way you can completely avoid hunger all together and not have to worry about binge eating.

Your meals should be a well balanced mixture of low fat foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and water. You should always be prepared for every meal and know exactly what you are eating and how much is too much. It is often best to prepare meals from a preselected menu of healthy recipes that allow you to know every ingredient. Eating out is not out of the question, but your restaurant and food selection must be made with your health in mind. Eating at random places at random times of day is never a good idea.

One way a rapid weight loss diet can help you get the jump on getting thin is by cutting your caloric intake in half right at the very start. To do this you should lower your portions at every meal so that you are only eating half the food that you normally would. By doing this you still get to eat the foods you love and will be losing weight at the same time!

Rapid weight loss diets will get you nowhere unless you make the permanent lifestyle changes necessary to keep the weight off after you initially lose it. After you reach your target weight, maintain a manageable and healthy diet that will keep you looking your best for years to come!

Reflections on a Recent Report- U.S. Automotive Supply Chains at a ...

In a recent study, The U.S. Auto Supply Chain at a Crossroads, sponsored by the Labor Market Information Offices of the states of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, researchers from Case Western Reserve University outline two possible futures for America?s automotive industry supply chains.? One is optimistically characterized by collaborative relationships between firms at all tiers of the supply chain.? The other path speculates that fickle relationships and fear of investment will prevent progress at each tier of the supply chain. This study was conducted between July 2010 and June 2011 and came about from funding generated from the recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or so-termed stimulus bill.

What is most interesting about this study is its focus on the smaller ?tier two? and ?tier three? suppliers that comprise U.S. automotive supply chains, firms that suffered from the effects of industry upheaval and dramatic demand declines bought about from the last global recession. According to this study, these firms account for 30 percent of current employment in the supply chain, and have been previously rather difficult to target and study.

The study points to some good news, namely that there is evidence that supplier relationships are indeed becoming more collaborative. Yet, other evidence points to the continued presence of short-term cost-cutting with larger OEM?s and suppliers passing the burden of cost cutting down to lower-tier suppliers. An interesting finding of a noted interview of a representative of a tier one supplier states the following:? ?At (this company), everything is short-term Today is everything. That mentality drives the behavior: Get it now, and don?t worry about the out years?? Focus on today; worry about tomorrow tomorrow.? The report goes on to cite findings related to firms that adopt ?high road? practices, namely higher wage, worker training, process investing in product and production process capabilities faring much better in the wake of recession than those that did not. Noted was that two-thirds of firms surveyed chose to postpone investment in equipment and process improvements.? The reasons cited were twofold:

?Customer purchasing strategies in many cases did not allow suppliers the financial or organizational resources they would need to implement such practices, and

Public policies (that) do not do enough to pave ?the high road? and block the ?low road?.?

Supply Chain Matters happened to read of this Case Western Study while also reading a recent article, Dan Akerson is Not a Car Guy, appearing in the August 29 edition of Bloomberg BusinessWeek. For readers unfamiliar with Daniel Akerson, he is the recent chairman and CEO of General Motors whose background originates primarily from the telecom industry and private equity.? He follows several other CEO?s who have led GM since the beginning of the bankruptcy crisis. ?The BusinessWeek article makes note that Akerson has moved GM out of survival mode and is purposefully challenging the previous management culture of GM. The article cites a particular example.? Teams presented a plan to build 45,000 of the new hybrid Chevrolet Volt in 2012, after supplier contracts were already in place to support that volume. According to the article, Akerson challenged his management team to put together a plan to support a more profitable build plan of 120,000 Volts in 2012, a significant threefold increase. GM?s engineering team was concerned not only for the radical change of ramp-up, but also the effect on quality if GM pressured suppliers to nearly triple output volumes of newer high tech parts. After four months of fact finding, Akerson had to back off his plan because suppliers would not take on the risk of building enough lithium-ion batteries unless GM guaranteed to pay their capital investment, should sales fall short of the build number. In the end, GM settled on a build number of 60,000.

That article along with the Case Western study caused us to ponder about yet another industry supply chain at the crossroads.? On the one hand, smaller suppliers continue to seek broader collaboration and support from their upper tier customers, avoiding the trickle ?down ?you get the burden of cost?? or ?our way or the highway? procurement behavior.? On the other hand, change agents with non-industry biases such as GM?s Akerson attack the culture, but lack sensitivity and attention to the overall cascading impacts to the overall supply chain. The jury is still out regarding Chrysler?s new infusion of Fiat?s management influence which seems grounded in operational management.

It would seem that the U.S. automotive industry needs to foster senior management that is willing to challenge the old norms of trickle-down impact among OEM?s and tier-one players, while having an operational and supply chain grounding to the cascading effects of build plan changes across the entire value-chain.

In 2009, this author, along with others, opined that the U.S. automotive industry?s greatest risk was a collapse from the bottom vs. the top.? Two years later, the U.S. government through its stimulus funding programs, brought both GM and Chrysler out of bankruptcy. However, this latest study from Case Western provides qualitative and quantitative reminders that the industry still remains at a crossroad.

We are again interested in hearing from U.S. auto industry readers.? Has supplier collaboration practices on the whole really changed?? Do you believe that the U.S. auto industry is more sensitive to supplier collaboration and investment?
