Twitter leads to under-performance on field of play, says Lord Coe

However he said that the mis-use of the site by athletes can lead to distraction.

?I have walked past my parents [and] close friends an hour before a race and not even recognized them or registered them. I just find it bizarre that people can be sitting there figuring out in 140 characters what they would say to the world at that moment. Just go out and win the bloody race,? said Lord Coe.

Lord Coe did not name athletes, but members of the British athletics team have got into trouble in the past for Tweeting.

Phillips Idowu, the triple jumper who failed to win a medal in the London games, angered his management when he withdrew from last year?s European Team Championships on Twitter.

At the time Charles van Commenee, the then-head of UK Athletics, said that athletes need training when it comes to Twitter use.

?You can't forbid athletes to use Twitter, this is an issue we have to deal with in modern times,? he said.

Some athletes have admitted that social media sites cost them dear in last summer?s games.

Emily Seebohm, the Australian swimmer who was favourite for an Olympic gold in the 100m backstroke but narrowly missed out on the medal, admitted that she stayed up too long on Twitter and Facebook in the lead-up to the games.

Following her defeat in the race she said: ?I just felt like I didn't really get off [social media] and get into my own mind.?

Matt Brown, an Australian swimming coach, said during the games that he would like to ?throw away some of those phones?.

Dr Victor Thompson, a London-based sports psychologist, said that there is no direct relationship between the amount of time that sports stars spend on Twitter and their performance.

?It may indicate to some that you may be less dedicated or are not focused on the right things but spending an hour on the computer doesn?t necessarily have a bearing on how you spend the next 23 hours of the day,? he said.

However he said that people?s performance could be affected by negative comments that they read on the site.

?You are going to get the extremes of comments about you as an athlete ? the real positives and the real negatives. People will use these when they evaluate their own performance, rather than what they think or the coach thinks. And that really influences their mood and how they bounce back,? said Dr Thompson.

In the summer Andy Murray, the tennis player, said that athletes should not be on Twitter ?too much?.

?It?s a bit like sitting on a computer 20 minutes, 30 minutes before your match. You wouldn?t be advised to do that. The same applies with Tweeting or mobile phones,? said Mr Murray, who won Olympic gold last year.

However there are many athletes who would argue with Lord Coe?s theory. Prolific Tweeters who can not be said to have under-performed on the field of play include Sir Chris Hoy, Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis.

Canada Green Lights Major Oil And Gas Acquisitions

Canada has given its approval to takeover bids of its firms by Asian energy giants China?s CNOOC (NYSE:$CEO) and Malaysia?s Petronas. CNOOC will be taking over Nexen Inc (NYSE:$NXY) for $15.1 billion while Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will assume the control of Progress Energy Resources Corp for $5.2 billion. In an apparent tit-for-tat move, China also gave approval for Swiss based Glencore International Plc to acquire the Canadian firm Viterra Inc for $6 billion. Viterra has a canola crushing plant in China and therefore the deal needed approval from Chinese regulators.

CNOOC is the third of the three large Chinese oil companies. Its $15 billion acquisition will be the biggest ever by any Chinese firm of a foreign company.? Nexen is the owner of Canada?s largest oil sands field and has significant operations in the U.K. North Sea. CNOOC currently has a 35% stake in Nexen?s Long Lake oil sands facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Around 8% of Nexen?s total production comes from U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Nexen also has a 20% stake in Usan project in offshore Nigeria which is operated by Total S.A (NYSE:$TOT). Less than a month ago, Total sold its $2.5 billion stake in Usan to China?s biggest refiner Sinopec (NYSE:$SNP).

Meanwhile, Canada is aiming to become one of the leading energy exporters of the world. Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited China a few months ago in an attempt to show his support for the Chinese investment in the Canadian economy which is considered vital for the country to achieve its global energy ambitions. The country?s exports contribute one-third to the economic output while almost a quarter of the total exports are energy products. Harper also wants to diversify the nation?s energy exports that are currently focused on the U.S. ?As a general rule, the Canadian government will not go for a controlling stake in their oil sands projects except under ?exceptional circumstances?.

Since Nexen has significant operations in Europe and the U.S. as well, the deal also requires the approval from EU and U.S. regulators. CNOOC has revealed that E.U. has also given its nod but the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S has so far remained silent. That committee, chaired by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, and as such is not directly seen as a political entity, but nothing in Washington D.C. is immune to politics.

Unlike CNOOC or Sinopec, Petronas is an LNG behemoth that is the owner of one of the world?s biggest LNG producing facility at Sarawak, Malaysia while its subsidiary MISC Berhad is the owner and operator of world?s biggest LNG fleet. Following the approval, Petronas now plans to construct a ~$10 billion LNG export facility along the coast of British Columbia. The company has privately held and is wholly owned by the government of Malaysia.

Due to intensive regulatory oversight, the Chinese oil companies have preferred oil investments in Africa (Nigeria) and South America (Brazil, Venezuela) over North America or Europe. Since CNOOC?s 2005 failed bid to acquire Unocal Corp for $18.5 billion, Chinese companies have preferred minority stakes in the U.S. CNOOC is currently working on the $2.5 billion drilling stakes of Devon Energy Corp. Besides that, it has also bought minority stakes from Statoil?s Gulf of Mexico assets in 2009 and Chesapeake Energy?s shale assets in 2010-11.

The shares of both CNOOC and Nexen are up 24.10% and 47.82% since the beginning of the current year. The shares of Nexen in particular had jumped by as much as 50% in the last week of July when the news of CNOOC?s bid was revealed.

CNOOC may be overpaying for Nexen in the short run but for the future of Chinese economic growth the resources have immense future value.? As an investor, valuing these deals at today?s prices is a mistake.? The marginal demand for oil and gas in Asia will be tremendous as this growth plays out and for the price of these assets to remain the same would mean holding demand and production in balance when it is demonstrably becoming more difficult to replenish reserves every year.? Peak oil is not the problem.? Peak oil at $40-50 per barrel is history.?? Deals like the Nexen and Progress acquisitions will become more common at valuations that will be even more shocking by today?s standards.

Checkers' Point Streak Ends at Texas

For all of the Checkers? recent success, they still can?t seem to solve the Texas Stars.

By way of a 3-1 defeat at Texas on Saturday, the Checkers fell to 0-1-2 against the Stars this season, with their South Division lead dropping to two points. Zac Dalpe opened the scoring in the first period before Texas stormed back to score three unanswered goals, one in each period, against goalie Dan Ellis, who finished with 28 saves.

The result marked the first time the Checkers have suffered a regulation loss on the road since Oct. 31 at Milwaukee. It also ended Charlotte?s point streak at seven games (5-0-2), which tied a franchise record set during the team?s inaugural season in 2010-11.

The Checkers, who suffered an overtime defeat at Houston on Friday, will now complete their three-games-in-three-nights stretch against divisional opponents at San Antonio on Sunday.

Saturday?s game started out brightly enough, with Dalpe ending a six-game goal drought that matched his longest of the season as the result of a great give-and-go play with Riley Nash just two seconds after a Checkers power play had expired. The goal was Dalpe?s eighth of the season and first since Dec. 11 against Milwaukee.

The home team then began its barrage against Ellis, who was playing for the second time in the Checkers? last six games. NHL veteran Toby Peterson started the scoring by finishing a centering feed from Taylor Vause with five minutes left in the first period. The goal was Peterson?s second of the season, as he had not scored since the season opener back on Oct. 13.

With the Stars beginning to seize the momentum ? though shots finished at an even 31 apiece, the home team was ahead 18-8 at one point ? Alex Chiasson scored the eventual game winner on a power play five minutes into the second period. The Checkers had taken two consecutive penalties to start the middle frame, having killed off a Riley Nash tripping penalty before Texas made them pay for Jeremy Welsh?s hold just 15 seconds after Nash?s penalty had expired.

Despite some increasing pressure by the Checkers, Stars scoring leader Cody Eakin, who had four goals in his last four games against Charlotte coming in, put the final nail in the coffin midway through the third period. As Chiasson sent a centering feed toward Eakin coming down the left side, Ellis nearly made a spectacular diving save only to see Eakin pull the puck toward his backhand and slide it under him for the 3-1 lead.

The Checkers out-shot Texas 13-6 in the third period, but it was to no avail as the team fell to 0-1-1 to start their three-in-three set. Even if they were to beat San Antonio on Sunday, they are already assured of their worst finish to a three-in-three this season, as Saturday?s loss dropped them to a combined 10-2-2 in those games.

NOTES: The Checkers are scoreless in their last 13 power-play opportunities, including an 0-for-4 showing against Texas ? Of the 11 teams the Checkers have faced this season, Texas is one of two (Oklahoma City) they have yet to defeat ? Tim Wallace assisted on Dalpe?s goal, giving him a two-game point streak (1g, 1a) ? Checkers defensemen Marc-Andre Gragnani and Rasmus Rissanen each missed the game due to injury. Finnish blueliner Tommi Kivisto played his second career AHL game in their stead ? Forwards Justin Shugg and Justin Soryal were healthy scratches.

Jim Miller gets bloody UFC 155 win over Joe Lauzon

UFC 155 was headed towards becoming one of the least memorable UFC pay-per-view cards in recent history until Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller stepped in the cage. The lightweights delivered a late Fight of the Year candidate as Miller won 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

Miller opened up the fight with a bevy of punches, and opened a cut on Lauzon's face early. Lauzon's wooziness allowed Miller to lock a standing arm triangle. Lauzon was able to slip out of the choke, but when he emerged, his face was covered in blood.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

Though Miller managed better attacks and wasn't bleeding as badly as Lauzon, he still found himself in trouble late in the third round. Lauzon dove onto Miller's legs, and attempted a leg lock submission. If there wasn't so much blood covering their bodies and the canvas, Lauzon might have pulled out the win.

Lauzon told Yahoo! Sports after the fight that he required 40 stitches for the cuts sustained during the fight.

Miller was impressed by Lauzon's toughness.

?Joe Lauzon is a tough kid. I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to," Miller said after the fight. "That?s how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

Oil boom turbocharges North Dakota growth

North Dakota was the nation?s fastest-growing state in the past year.

U.S. Census Bureau data show that North Dakota?s population grew 2.2 percent to 699,628 in the year ending July 1, as the oil boom drew workers to the Bakken fields in the western part of the state.

?We had rural population declining in western North Dakota for decades,? said Dean Bangsund, an economist at North Dakota State University in Fargo who has studied the effects of the oil boom. ?Now we are looking at growth curves that are just short of astonishing.?

North Dakota in 2012 became the No. 2 oil producing state behind Texas as drillers tapped into shale oil deposits and began pumping record amounts of crude. In October, the oil output was 747,239 barrels, nearly six times the output of five years ago.

Rod Backman, chairman of the North Dakota Census Committee, a group of mostly state officials who advise the government, said the census estimates don?t include at least 24,000 workers who live in temporary camps set up mainly for migrant oil field workers.

He and others see no sign of the population trends changing in the years ahead.

?At some point the drilling is not going to be as fast-paced as it is now,? said Backman, CEO of Covenant Consulting Group, an accounting and consulting firm in Bismarck, N.D. ?But when you start factoring in the permanent jobs, the expectation is that we are going to continue to see job growth and population growth.?

Bangsund said the state?s other sectors, especially agriculture and manufacturing, have remained strong. North Dakota?s farmers weren?t hit hard by the drought that struck other parts of the Midwest, he said.

The state?s economic base ? a measure of goods sold out of state ? grew 11 percent in 2011, the most recent year for which data are available, Bangsund said.

The population boom is mostly driven by an influx of people seeking work, he said. The oil fields alone probably account for 40,000 to 50,000 jobs today, compared with about 3,000 to 5,000 jobs early in the last decade, he added.

North Dakota?s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in November was 3.1 percent, compared to the nation?s 7.7 percent rate. Earlier this year, North Dakota reported 20,000 unfilled job openings.

Backman said birth rates also are up because many of the immigrant oil workers are of child-bearing age. Some migrants are bringing families to the state, he said.

?We also have a lot more high school and college students staying in the state because of the job opportunities,? Backman said.

Snore Less And Sleep Better With These Tips - Health Care

Everybody needs about 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night in order to be alert for the day ahead and to be healthy. This sleep has to be restful, though, or it won?t do you any good. This can be difficult to get if you or someone you sleep with snores. This article will provide some methods that you can try to deal with that dilemma.

Nasal strips can help limit snoring. These nasal strips appear very much like a Band-Aid. However, they function much differently than a Band-Aid. Nasal strips are specially designed to hold the nasal passages open. You will be better able to breath with your nose and it can greatly decrease your snoring.

If you want to minimize snoring, make sure you get adequate sleep. However, just increasing the number of hours that you sleep is not enough; you also have to sleep on a regular schedule daily. You should strive to go to sleep at night and get up in the morning at the same time, respectively, every day.

People who suffer from allergies should avoid using antihistamines before bed, because they may increase your snoring. Antihistamines cause drowsiness and could relax the air passage ways in your throat, resulting in a higher chance that you?ll snore when you sleep. If it is necessary to take these types of drugs, take them several hours before bedtime.

If you are active and exercise regularly, this will help you stop snoring. Snoring at night can be stopped with regular exercise. Exercise makes your breathing more regular and this can stop snoring. Exercise reduces your stress, as well as helps your lungs stay healthy. Lots of stress can affect your breathing issues and can increase the chance that you?ll snore.

What you consume can contribute to your snoring. If you regularly consume sedatives or alcohol, limit your intake. Alcohol and sedatives can decrease your central nervous system. This will cause your body to become overly relaxed and the muscles of your throat will not have the ability to function properly.

Snoring could be stress or psychologically-induced, so try getting into yoga or using some breathing techniques. By fixing your snoring problem, you will find yourself getting more sleep, which in the end will make you more relaxed and will also help your stress levels.

Snoring is sometimes a sign that other things may be going on in your body. Snoring deprives your brain of oxygen, which can lead to high blood pressure. This damages your carotid arteries and adds to plaque formation in these important arteries which supply blood to the brain. This can sometimes lead to a stroke. While this may not be the rule, it?s one reason to look into snoring cures.

If you keep your mouth open while you?re asleep, you will snore more. When you breathe through your mouth, air vibrates and echoes as it travels down your throat. However, if you breathe through your nose, air can travel through your body without going down your throat. It is possible to avoid breathing through your mouth by utilizing chin straps or mouth sealants to keep your mouth from opening while you sleep. Most pharmacies carry such devices, so simply ask your pharmacist for a recommendation.

It can seem hard to control snoring. However, that is a false assumption. You?ll find there are many techniques to try which can help to relieve you from snoring. The article above is a good starting point for ending snoring and sleeping well.
