Jay-Z rocks Brooklyn arena he helped get built

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

Jay-Z performs on stage at the newly built Barclays Center in the Brooklyn borough of New York on Friday, Sept. 28.

By Simon Vozick-Levinson, Rolling Stone

"I've been on many stages, been around the world, but nothing feels like tonight," Jay-Z told the crowd Friday night during his inaugural blow-out at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. He reeled off a few of the other noted houses he's rocked: the Grammys, Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, the Apollo Theater. "Nothing feels like tonight, Brooklyn. I swear to God."

Jay's performance -- the first ever in the newly constructed venue, with seven more sold-out shows scheduled over the next week -- was a many-layered milestone. While he famously grew up in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses, this was his first major show of this size in his home borough. As partial owner of the NBA's rechristened Brooklyn Nets, he helped get this billion-dollar basketball arena built not far from his old neighborhood. His rise to this level of success and cultural power is an incredible American story, and he is justifiably proud.

He opened the show aptly with 1997's classic "Where I'm From." It's a staple of his live sets, a song he's performed hundreds of times if not more. Friday night?-- center stage in jeans and a black puffy vest over a custom Nets jersey, gold chains hanging down his chest -- he attacked the verses with a new force, spitting out precise syllables: "I'm from where the hammers rung, news cameras never come. ..."

Jay stood alone under a spotlight on the narrow stage, backed by a huge sloping video screen and a tight live band built into perches above him. He paid tribute to a fallen mentor early on by building the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick in the Door" and "Juicy" into the set list. Later, shortly after an authoritative "99 Problems," he walked to a far corner of the stage and retrieved a glittering gold bottle, requesting respectful silence as he poured out a little bubbly for Biggie: "See, you can stunt like that when you own the whole place." He turned reflective, reminiscing aloud about his journey from the projects to this stage. "You don't mind if I take my time? I'm really overwhelmed a little bit."

He channeled the night's emotions into a top-notch rendition of the hit parade he's road tested at festivals and arenas over the last few years, covering his career from 1996's "Reasonable Doubt" to 2009's "The Blueprint 3" in a little over an hour. He delivered the key lines in 2001's great "Heart of the City" with extra emphasis, punching the air as he rapped, "I told you in '96 that I came to take this [expletive], and I did."

Fans arrive for the first of eight Jay-Z shows at the new Barclays Center.

As the main set wound down, Jay-Z looked out at the crowd of 18,000 reverent fans, savoring the moment. "What an amazing feeling tonight," he said again. "This night was a dream." He thanked everyone sincerely while the chords of 2003's "Encore" rolled quietly on. Someone in the crowd passed a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey with Jackie Robinson's name on it up to the stage, and he held it up with pride: "Look how far we've come."

Jay told Rolling Stone a few days ago?that there would be no guests at his Barclays Center shows. ("This is my one chance to be selfish!" he kidded.) He kept that promise until the encore, when he surprised the arena by bringing out Bed-Stuy legend Big Daddy Kane, who ripped through 1988's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" and 1989's "Warm It Up, Kane," while busting out some old-school moves (complete with a full jumping split) with his original backup dancers Scoob and Scrap. "We have to understand our history," said Jay-Z appreciatively.

"OK, I'm still not ready to leave," he went on after Kane left, drawing deafening cheers. Jay ran through a couple of recent guest verses -- reveling in the double-time flow of G.O.O.D. Music's "Clique" and the luxurious style of Rick Ross' "3 Kings." "I got a million of these!" he crowed.

But the hour was growing late. Jay-Z sent us home with a heartfelt speech about the "genius-level talent" that he feels lies within everyone. "I ain't no different from anyone in this room, and now I'm standing on this stage, living proof," he said. And with that, it was finally time to say goodbye?-- if only so he could rest up for all the other shows he has coming up. "There's no [expletive] curfew," he said with a grin. "But I've really got to go."

Climate change could cripple southwestern U.S. forests: Trees face rising drought stress and mortality as climate warms

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Combine the tree-ring growth record with historical information, climate records, and computer-model projections of future climate trends, and you get a grim picture for the future of trees in the southwestern United States. That's the word from a team of scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Arizona, and other partner organizations.

If the Southwest is warmer and drier in the near future, widespread tree death is likely and would cause substantial changes in the distribution of forests and of species, the researchers report this week in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Southwestern forests grow best when total winter precipitation is high combined with a summer and fall that aren't too hot and dry.

The team developed a Forest Drought-Stress Severity Index that combines the amount of winter precipitation, late summer and fall temperatures, and late summer and fall precipitation into one number.

"The new 'Forest Drought-Stress Index' that Williams devised from seasonal precipitation and temperature-related variables matches the records of changing forest conditions in the Southwest remarkably well," said co-author Thomas W. Swetnam, director of the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.

"Among all climate variables affecting trees and forests that have ever been studied, this new drought index has the strongest correlation with combined tree growth, tree death from drought and insects, and area burned by forest fires that I have ever seen."

A. Park Williams of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico is the lead author of the paper, "Temperature as a potent driver of regional forest drought stress and tree mortality." Six of the paper's 15 authors are at the UA. A complete list of authors is at the bottom of this release.

To figure out which climate variables affect forests, the researchers aligned some 13,000 tree core samples with known temperature and moisture data. The team also blended in events known from tree-ring, archaeological and other paleorecords, such as the late 1200s megadrought that drove the ancient Pueblo Indians out of longtime settlements such as those at Mesa Verde, Colo.

By comparing the tree-ring record to climate data collected in the Southwest since the late 1800s, the scientists identified two climate variables that estimate annual southwestern tree-growth variability with exceptional accuracy: total winter precipitation and average summer-fall atmospheric evaporative demand, a measure of the overall dryness of the environment.

Williams said, "Atmospheric evaporative demand is primarily driven by temperature. When air is warmer, it can hold more water vapor, thus increasing the pace at which soil and plants dry out. The air literally sucks the moisture out of the soil and plants."

Finding that summer-fall atmospheric evaporative demand is just as important as winter precipitation has critical implications for the future of southwestern forests, he said.

These trends, the researchers noted, are already occurring in the Southwest, where temperatures generally have been increasing for the past century and are expected to continue to do so because of accumulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

There still will be wet winters, but increased frequency of warmer summers will put more stress on trees and limit their growth after wet winters, the study reports.

"We can use the past to learn about the future," Williams said. "For example, satellite fire data from the past 30 years show that there has been a strong and exponential relationship between the regional tree-ring drought-stress record and the area of southwestern forests killed by wildfire each year. This suggests that if drought intensifies, we can expect forests not only to grow more slowly, but also to die more quickly."

The study points out that very large and severe wildfires, bark-beetle outbreaks and a doubling of the proportion of dead trees in response to early 21st-century warmth and drought conditions are evidence that a transition of southwestern forest landscapes toward more open and drought-tolerant ecosystems may already be underway.

And while 2000s drought conditions have been severe, the regional tree-ring record indicates there have been substantially stronger megadrought events during the past 1,000 years.

The strongest megadrought occurred during the second half of the 1200s and is believed to have played an important role in the abandonment of ancient Puebloan cultural centers throughout the Southwest. The most recent megadrought occurred in the late 1500s and appears to have been strong enough to kill many trees in the Southwest.

"When we look at our tree-ring record, we see this huge dip in the 1580s when all the tree rings are really tiny," Williams said. "Following the 1500s megadrought, tree rings get wider, and there was a major boom in new trees. Nearly all trees we see in the Southwest today were established after the late-1500s drought, even though the species we evaluated can easily live longer than 400 years. So that event is a benchmark for us today. If forest drought stress exceeds late 1500 levels, we expect that a lot of trees are going to be dying."

Will future forest drought-stress levels reach or exceed those of the megadroughts of the 1200s and 1500s?

Using climate-model projections, the team projected that such megadrought-type forest drought-stress conditions will be exceeded regularly by the 2050s. If climate-model projections are correct, forest drought-stress levels during even the wettest and coolest years of the late 21st century will be more severe than the driest, warmest years of the previous megadroughts.

The study forecasts that during the second half of this century, about 80 percent of years will exceed megadrought levels.

The current drought, which began in 2000, is a natural case study about what to expect from projected climate scenarios. While average winter precipitation totals in the Southwest have not been exceptionally low, average summer-fall evaporative demand is the highest on record.

And trees, Williams says, are paying the price. The team concluded forest drought stress during more than 30 percent of the past 13 years, including 2011 and 2012, matched or exceeded the megadrought-type levels of the 1200s and 1500s. The only other 13-year periods when megadrought-type conditions were reached with such frequencies in the past 1,000 years were during the megadroughts themselves.

UA co-author Daniel Griffin said, "This research is distinctly different from work done in a similar vein in two ways: One, it puts these projections for the future in a concrete historical context, and two, it shows that the impacts on the forests will not be restricted to one species or one site at low elevation, but in fact will take place at forests across the landscape."

Griffin is a doctoral candidate in the UA School of Geography and Development.

Co-author Craig D. Allen, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said, "Consistent with many other recent studies, these findings provide compelling additional evidence of emerging global risks of amplified drought-induced tree mortality and extensive forest die-off as the planet warms."

Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation funded the research.

Computer classifies paintings like an art critic

30 min.

While art may be in the eye of the beholder, a computer algorithm has been developed that can classify paintings as well as distinguished human art historians.

The task is a breakthrough for the field of artificial intelligence, showing that futuristic computers won?t just be trivia-answering champs such as IBM?s Watson or math nerds such as the Todai Robot, but trusty companions in fashionable art circles as well.

The algorithm computes from each painting 4,027 numbers that reflect the content of the image such as color, texture and shapes and then uses pattern-recognition and statistical methods to analyze similarities and differences between painting styles.

In an experiment, Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University used their algorithm to analyze about 1,000 paintings from 34 well-known artists. The computer provided a network of similarities between painters that agrees with the perception of art historians.

For example, it was able to distinguish between classical realism and modern artistic styles and then identified sub groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements, such as grouping the painters Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo close to each other.

?These results demonstrate that machine vision and pattern recognition algorithms are able to mimic the complex cognitive task of the human perception of visual art,? the researchers conclude in a recent paper on their work published in the Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage.

This skill, they add, ?can be used to measure and quantify visual similarities between paintings, painters and schools of art.??

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Top Reasons Your Fans Are Hitting the 'Unlike' Button | Social ...

ImageGetting a lot of people to like your Facebook page can be gratifying, but losing their loyalty can be equally devastating. You?re usually left thinking ?what did I do wrong, was it something I said?? That?s if you?re keeping track of your fan numbers close enough!

This is the unsettling reality for many companies and independent pages who are struggling to find ways to retain fans after enjoying an initial boost of popularity. So what is causing your fans to hit the infamous unlike button, and what can you do to stop more fans from doing so?

The Human Spam Filter Effect ? Posting Too Frequently

If you?ve ever used an email client before you know about spam filtering ? it?s an automated mechanism that identifies spam-like content and throws it straight into the trash bin. Many Facebook users are so in-tuned with internet browsing that they?ve developed their own built in spam filter and are quick to discard overbearing, unwelcomed, and useless status updates. In fact, people get so aggravated by a high frequency of posts that they don?t even want you having access to their wall anymore, and subsequently they unlike your page.

So how often should you post?

This is no rocket science and there is no magic formula. Each business is different so it's all about A/B testing. Besides, your emphasis should be on quality not quantity. The general rule of thumb is that if you don?t have something great to post, don?t post at all. With that said, if you?re taking the time to research your market and pay attention to the requests, opinions, and interests of fans, you should be able to produce at least 3-5 good status updates per week to start with. Increase the frequency if you see a positive response and increased engagement from your fanbase. Again, test different scenarios and don't be afraid to fail at times...

Lack of Incentive - What Have You Done For Me Lately?

You may have forgotten how you got all of those fans to begin with; you probably offered some type of incentive. Maybe it was a discount, some exclusive content or app, some genuinely helpful information, or some wholesome entertainment that made them come back for more. Whatever it was, you?re obviously not doing it anymore. Keeping fans on Facebook is a lot like keeping fans with any other type of media. If a television show is no longer entertaining, viewers stop watching, ratings decrease, and eventually it gets taken off the air. If you?re noticing a steady decline in fan numbers, you need to take action immediately and reintroduce the incentive-based status update strategy. A good way to let your fans know that they?re appreciated is to use a reveal tab/fan gateway to give them access to exclusive content that only fans can see. This will make your fans feel valued and motivate them to keep following your statuses to avoid missing any upcoming contest or giveaway. It will also encourage non-fans to join your page out of curiosity.

Failed Initial Targeting

Maybe the reason why they?re unliking you is because they were never really your fans to begin with? It could be that in your rush to get as many fans as possible in the beginning, you may have neglected the process of carefully targeting your audience. There are lots of ways to get fans on Facebook, including buying them from marketing gurus that are equipped with all the latest tools and tricks. However, if you don?t make an effort to ensure that your fans are properly targeted you could find a large percentage of them losing interest down the road.

So how do you do a better job of targeting your true fan base?

One of the best "organic" ways to attract fans that are likely to stick with you for the long haul is to advertise your fan page EVERYWHERE you can. Think beyond your website, e.g. email signatures, business cards, flyers, invoices, brochures etc... Another great way to attract targeted fans is do joint ventures with other fan pages in your niche. The concept is simple ? you find already successful fan pages that have a lot fans who would probably be interested in your page, then you contact the page administrators and ask them what it would take for them to post a link to one of your statuses in their next update. However, the most efficient ways to attract laser targeted Facebook fans will require you to put your hand in your pocket: Facebook Ads! Using Facebook Ads you can target people by location, age, sex, marital status and most importantly INTERESTS. This gives you the ability to display your ad only on profiles that are likely to become fans and/or customers. Coupled with a fan-gated contest or giveaway, Facebook Ads is ridiculously efficient! Try different ad rotations and targeting options to ensure you get the best bang for your buck.

Your Posts Just Suck

There really is no better way to say it. Your fans are unliking your page for the simple reason that they are tired of reading substandard posts that lack useful information or entertainment value.

How do you fix this?

In essence, you need to learn how to post status updates that are captivating and share-worthy. Adding a dislike button to each one of your statuses using Status Magic (as explained in the previous link) might be a good way to find out what your fans do not like before they get so sick of your antics that they completely unlike your entire page.

Use media to your advantage.

If you don?t have the resources, time, or skill to create your own quality media content, find it elsewhere on the web and introduce it to your fans. Sometimes being a known resource and sharing content that has already been created is all it takes. You?d be surprised how many people will stick around just because they know you always bring the best of the web to their fingertips. Think of websites like Digg or Reddit to find potential "viral content" that is relevant to your niche.

Use news and trends to your advantage.

Again, you don?t have to be a world-class journalist and conduct interviews or author breaking news. You just need to point out the latest trends and occurrences that your fans are likely to be interested in, and maybe add your own spin or opinion on the matter. Remember that your fans are basically subscribers; keep them up-to-date and involved.

Be interactive and engaging.

When you?re posting a status about an upcoming promotion, recent news, or a popular trend, make sure you pursue the input of your fans. Hold a poll, ask them to leave a comment, and give them the opportunity to engage in open dialect. Getting your fans involved is a good way to keep their mouse cursor away from the unlike button, and it also creates a buzz. If you're running out of ideas on what to post, check out this article.

And finally...Have a personality and be personable!

Don?t be afraid to be funny, witty, and unique. Stand out from the crowd by acting like a human being, and not a status updating advertising robot. There is no preset formula that will make people like you. Facebook is a digital platform but it still operates in the real world; people like other people simply because... they?re likable. What?s the point of starting a page on a social network if you?re just going to be antisocial?

Public Speaking Tips To Help You Shine - Cordoba Luxury Rentals

Have you ever found yourself facing a room of people, full of nervousness about how to address them and hold their attention? If you?re like most of us, you probably experience at least a few rushes of public-speaking jitters when you have to talk in front of a crowd. Here are some tips to make your next public-speaking occasion as effective and anxiety-free as possible:

?

Know Your Material

This is perhaps the most central key to effectively addressing a group of people. If you have any doubts about the material at hand or any uncertainties about your own grasp of it, your level of anxiety will be high ? and, of course, the more nervous and lacking in confidence you are, the more likely you are to come across as a weak and ineffectual public speaker. So it is crucially important to review your material extensively and practice your presentation as thoroughly as possible so that you can walk in the room relaxed and confident in the conviction that you know your stuff.

?

Know Your Audience

Before you prepare your presentation, make sure you know your audience. Have a strong grasp of their interests and their reasons for being attendance at your public speaking occasion. Also make sure you keep in mind the general tone of the event and group of people ? is it an informal talk to a bunch of people with similar interests, a serious and formal business presentation, or a presentation for a crowd who will want there to be a high entertainment factor? When it comes to the topic you?re addressing, will you be speaking to a group of specialists on that topic or non-specialists without much background in the area? Knowing as much as you can about the audience will help you design a presentation effectively geared toward them.

?

Be Conscious of Speed?

One of the biggest mistakes that novice public speakers do is talk at a very rapid pace. This quickness can come from nervousness or just from a sense that there isn?t enough time to fit in all the necessary information. So it is important to make sure you slow down when speaking, giving your audience time to absorb what you have said (and also giving note-takers a chance to write things down). Along those same lines, make sure you have designed your presentation so that you?re not trying to squeeze too much information into too short an amount of time. Practice it several times and restructure it or cut out sections if it needs shortening. You will be much more comfortable and relaxed if you?re not worrying, throughout your presentation, that you might not fit it all in if you don?t go fast enough.?

?

Be Present

A truly effective public speaker makes the audience feel as if they are being seen, spoken to, and heard, so you want to give the impression of being tuned into the people in the room. An important way of doing this is to maintain sincere eye contact; looking around the room and meeting people?s eyes (for no more than roughly 3 seconds) has been proven as a strong method of connecting with your audience. You want to look at them, not around or above them. In addition, if one of them poses a question, make sure you really listen and respond in a way that is as individually geared toward the person and the question as possible ? the key to being able to do this is to know your material so well that you are able to remain flexible and adaptable, able to navigate the situation in a natural manner rather than having to stick to rigid notecards.

?

Speak With Conviction

If you speak as if you are passionate about and committed to what you are saying, people won?t likely notice if you make a few gaffes along the way. Your ability to hold the audience?s interest and convince them of the ideas you?re presenting has a lot to do with how much you convey your own sense of belief in those ideas. So be aware of using your vocal tones, your facial expressions, and your body language as tools to convey conviction and enthusiasm and also as powerful mediums of persuasion. Another way to communicate your passion and belief in what you?re presenting is through the basic act of putting together a really strong presentation ? if you come in with a highly organized, well thought-out, and articulate presentation, your audience will know they are in the presence of someone who cares about what he or she is saying.?

Ibis hotels to have robots paint art while they track your sleep no, that's not creepy at all video

First they invaded our factories, and now it's our hotel rooms. Is nowhere safe from the robots? In truth, Ibis' upcoming Sleep Art project is very slick, even if it smacks of robot voyeurism. Ibis hotels in Berlin, London and Paris will let 40 successful applicants sleep on beds that each have 80 sensors translating movements, sound and temperature into truly unique acrylic paintings by robotic arms connected through WiFi. You don't have to worry that the machines are literally watching you sleep -- there's no cameras or other visual records of the night's tossing and turning, apart from the abstract lines on the canvas. All the same, if you succeed in landing a stay in one of the Sleep Art hotel rooms between October 13th and November 23rd, you're a brave person. We all know how this ends.

Jeanne Cooper still thriving on daytime TV

(AP) ? Betty White isn't the only woman of a certain, ahem, older age still thriving on television.

Jeanne Cooper is right there with her.

Cooper plays wealthy Katherine Chancellor on "The Young and the Restless," which aired its 10,000th episode Thursday. She joined the CBS soap a few months after it debuted in March 1973, and is its longest-tenured cast member.

Cooper, who turns 84 next month, shows no signs of slowing down.

She said this week: "What would I do? I'm no good at crocheting. My fingers would bleed."

Like White, who is 90, Cooper authored a book about her career titled "Not Young, Still Restless." At a recent signing, the grandmother of eight said some fans stayed the entire evening, awed at meeting the grand dame of fictional Genoa City, Wis.

"I'm very motivating for some people," said Cooper, who makes infrequent public appearances. "It's a character, as rich as she is, that has ordinary problems. If you impress one person to a better way of living, you've transferred what you should do."

Cooper recalled a recent visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get new plates for her car. The employee behind the counter whispered to her, "I know who you are."

"It has its perks being Mrs. Chancellor," she said, laughing, "and if I have to use it, by golly, I'll use it. I'm through standing in lines at my age."

While other soaps' ratings have dwindled or the shows have been canceled as the daytime audience has shrunk, "Y&R" has been TV's top-rated soap since December 1998. Cooper attributes its success and longevity to the writing that created likeable characters.

"That's the mainstay of the show," she said. "You've always been able to become involved, whether you were wealthy or whatever your status is, our show hit the human being."

"The Young and the Restless" will celebrate its 40th anniversary in March. New executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who previously oversaw "General Hospital," and new head writer Josh Griffith are cooking up story lines that include the return of Jess Walton, who plays Jill, later this fall, and emotional, professional and surprising physical challenges for the Newman family.

"Jill is making it a little sharper to meet the demands of where things are today in the world of very fast films and lazy minds," Cooper said.

One of Cooper's proudest moments was when her real-life facelift was televised on the show in 1984 as her character underwent the surgery at the same time. Call it TV's first "extreme makeover" in daytime.

"It opened up reconstructive surgery for so many people, youngsters getting things done," she said. "To this day, people will come up to me and say, 'Thank you so much for doing that. My mom or I had something done, and not just cosmetic surgery.' That was an incredible experience in my life."

Unlike a lot of actors, Cooper fesses up to having had her eyes done and a slight chin tuck. Three days a week, her trainer arrives at her hilltop home in Los Angeles at 6 a.m. to put Cooper through stretching and exercises.

"Then I get my tush to work," she said in her famous throaty laugh.

Portland Chefs on a fly fishing weekend: Recipes for food, drink, and ...

By JEN STEVENSON
Photography by DAVID L. REAMER

Come October, when autumn crisps the air, and the maple and aspen leaves are stained crimson and amber, there?s quite possibly no more beautiful, serene locale in the Pacific Northwest than central Oregon?s majestic Metolius River.

This bewitchingly curvy, watery goddess wends nearly 30 miles from the headwaters at Metolius Springs to Lake Billy Chinook. Along the way the river creeps through idyllic Camp Sherman (population: 376), a mishmash of old-fashioned cabins, friendly folk and fir trees as far as the eye can see. It?s the ideal wilderness getaway for a group of kitchen-weary chefs and farmers seeking respite from double-digit workdays behind hot stoves, smokers and sausage grinders. Armed with fly rods, waders and plenty of tippet ? as well as enough food, wine and whiskey to feed and souse an army ? they?ve traveled three hours from Portland via gently undulating back roads for fresh air, the challenge of cunning prey and, ultimately, an incomparable meal. As this brisk, beautiful October morning blooms, the Camp Sherman general store is Sunday-sleepy, patronized exclusively by a few locals sipping black coffee and an affable Labrador named Jim. With its vintage coolers stacked with cold beer, a well-stocked fishing section and pay phone that?s not just for nostalgia?s sake (cell service is nonexistent here), this quaint market is the hub of Metolius River society, and the ideal (read: only) spot to stock up on last-minute fishing trip essentials.

I?m supposed to meet Victory Bar and Free House chef/owner Eric Moore, Olympic Provisions salumist Elias Cairo and co-owner Tyler Gaston, and Baird Family Farms owner/farmer Trevor Baird here at 9 a.m. Knowing them like I do, I take a hike and come back around 10 a.m. to find ? nobody. An investigation of the store?s fishing aisle turns up Trevor, who, in true intrepid fisherman style, left at 5 a.m. to make the drive from his orchards in Dayton. But the Portland crew doesn?t appear for another hour, finally rolling into the parking lot at 11 a.m. in a battered white van bearing a ?My Name Is Remington? sticker and a decal of a skull with crossed fishing poles instead of bones. Excuses fly ? they had to stop for breakfast, calls of nature and to forage chanterelles for dinner. But eventually the real reason for their tardiness emerges.

?We forgot the wine,? Tyler explains sheepishly. ?We were 30 minutes out, but we had to go back.?
?You forgot your wife?? Trevor queries. ?I thought we weren?t supposed to bring them.?
?The wine,? someone clarifies. ?Way worse.?
?

Weaving their way past now-awake tourists buying fresh maple bars and lattes, the gang queues up for an intense consultation with the market?s resident fishing adviser, poring over the hand-crafted flies and fluidly exchanging insider banter about leader and split shot while they wait their turn. After picking up a few necessities and tips, they head back to Remington and begin the involved process of suiting up for the river.
Sweatshirts come off, revealing a sea of tattoos that draw a few double takes from passers-by, and intense negotiations begin. As it turns out, men preparing to fly fish are very much like teenage girls at a slumber party. The guys exchange thermals and flannels, borrow fishing hats from each other, brag about the deals they got on new waders (?30 percent off and I had a $20 off coupon!? someone crows), and deeply debate a very serious decision ? jeans or tights.

?Jeans are going to be so uncomfortable,? Eli agonizes.

?Just wear tights,? Eric suggests. Eli narrows his eyes at him. ?Since when have I ever made fun of you?? Eric asks innocently.

?Does anyone remember where the hole in my waders is?? asks Trevor.

?Somewhere near the ankle,? Eli reminds him.

Tyler peers with obvious concern at the hard-won box of wine sitting in the car. ?Should I put the wine in my waders to cool it?? he asks.
Vests are donned, jackets are zipped and pockets are stuffed with liquid ?provisions.?

?Pass the flask,? someone hollers. ?And let?s do this!?

It?s generally known that unwinding isn?t usually a tranquil endeavor when it comes to cooks, but that?s hardly the case for this group as they confront the river. Upon reaching the bank, everyone instantly adopts laser focus and B-2 Spirit-like stealth, wordlessly fanning out over the picturesque river, each staking their claim to a swath of the pristine waters. After slowly wading into the current, they silently, methodically cast, re-cast, cast again and wait, then repeat.

As the sun drops behind the shimmering aspen dotting the riverbank and the sky blushes a bright streaky pink, the Metolius? steady purr is punctuated by the heavy plops of fat native trout leaping in pursuit of their dinner. They live up to their elusive reputation, and after hours of standing knee-deep in the chilly waters, the boys have landed just a few small specimens, all thrown back. Trevor catches the day?s prize ? a 9-inch trout ? which is praised, photographed and returned to its home. Reluctantly retiring for the day, the guys trudge back to the car, passing the market?s fishing expert en route. Even he has landed only one fish.

Fortunately, coming up fishless has no impact on supper. Since the Metolius is a federally protected catch-and-release river, its slippery inhabitants are legally spared a sizzling end in a cast iron skillet. With this in mind, the guys have designed a menu honoring both the sanctity of the river and the season: cauliflower soup with cured salmon roe; roasted root vegetable salad with chanterelles; wild salmon over lentils with fresh horseradish cream; a hearty choucroute garni; and a golden-crusted, mile-high apple pie baked by Olympic Provisions pastry chef Amelia Lane, plated a la mode with her homemade maple ice cream.

When they arrive at the quaint riverfront cabin, unloading the car proves no easy feat. Remington is weighted down with what is, predictably, no ordinary ?weekend at the cabin? feast: coolers filled with cured and fresh meats, glistening produce from Saturday?s Portland Farmers Market, and perhaps most important ? a large crate clinking with bottles of beautiful French and Oregon wines. Each is matched to a course by Olympic Provisions/Clyde Common wine director Star Black, who, clearly knowing her clientele, sent it off with a sagely realistic blessing: ?Have fun, catch a fish and don?t get too (messed) up ... or do.?

Finally, four bottles of whiskey materialize ? one per fisherman, presumably.
?

In the kitchen, Tyler pours tumblers of fresh-pressed cider from Trevor?s heirloom cider apple orchards and spikes them with House Spirits Distillery?s Slab Town whiskey. He then opens a bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol Ros? and Teutonic Wine Company?s Pinot Noir Ros? for good measure, while Eli slices up an Olympic Provisions Salchichon salami and sets out a bowl of pistachios. The guys relish the simple snack as they swap stories about the one that got away, which are soon eclipsed by the tale of an angry beaver that chased Eli out of the river. Eventually, the volley of jokes evoked by the beaver attack wanes, and talk turns to the most crucial of subjects ? dinner.

Eli swings a heavy sack of oysters into the sink. ?Those oysters aren?t going to shuck themselves,? he informs the group.

After making sure a bottle of Marie-Noelle Ledru Ros? Champagne is chilling properly (in ice, not his waders), Tyler shucks dozens of Kusshi, Tillamook and Yaquina Bay oysters from Newman?s Fish Market. Trevor mixes another round of whiskey ciders, and Eli and Eric take to the stove, easily falling into the effortless kitchen tandem the childhood best friends developed while working a three-year apprenticeship together in Switzerland.

Eric peels and slices crisp white turnips for the roast vegetable salad, tosses them with olive oil, fresh thyme, chile flakes, salt and pepper, and then throws them in a cast iron skillet and into the oven. Next he seeds and slices the Delicata squash sitting next to a platter of freshly foraged chanterelles. Beside him, Eli tackles the choucroute garnie, deftly breaking down a chunk of bacon into lardons and browning them in a Dutch oven. He then turns his attention to the oysters, quickly chopping a handful of shallot and chives and dousing them with a robust pour of champagne to create an impromptu mignonette.

Just before everyone breaks for bivalves, the cabin?s smoke alarm goes off.

?Already?? asks Trevor.

?Just wait ?til I burn the s**t out of the salmon,? Eli says cheerfully.

?And we haven?t even forgotten the pie yet,? Tyler adds.

Everyone freezes for a moment, squinting at the ceiling, and the alarm stops.

Eli takes advantage of the quiet kitchen to attempt grunt work delegation. ?If anyone wants a job, the cream needs to be whipped.?
?
After the oysters are reduced to empty shells, and the champagne and accompanying toasts are but a memory, Eric sets out wooden bowls and ladles a silky cauliflower soup into each one. He gently spoons bright orange cured coho roe in the center and accessorizes with a few carefully placed drops of olive oil and strands of chive, then lays a homemade black pepper cracker across each bowl. The result is a work of art, and the kitchen is quiet as everyone digs in, eschewing formalities like a table and chairs, content just to congregate around the kitchen island.

It?s not long until the bowls are scraped clean, and stove duties resume. Eric tosses the still-warm roasted vegetables and chanterelles in a simple dressing of sweet onion relish, cider vinegar, Dijon and olive oil, as Eli stirs a pan of tiny green lentils du puy cooked with a mirepoix and finished with sherry vinegar and butter. He sears slabs of wild Columbia River king salmon in a hot pan, managing not to set off the smoke alarm a second time, and when they?ve cooked to tender, flaky perfection, he plates the lentils, douses them with fresh horseradish-infused cream, and gently lays the fish on top. He then plates the impressive choucroute garnie ? a hearty, terrifically fragrant embarrassment of meat riches nestled in hot, briny homemade sauerkraut.

?Good thing I brought three sausages for each person,? Eli says, surveying the monumental spread. ?Franks, kielbasa, brats ? hope everyone?s ready.?

?I?m not really hungry,? Trevor says. ?I ate a lot of pistachios.?
?
By the time Lane?s mountain of an apple pie is warmed through in the oven and served in thick wedges alongside generous scoops of maple ice cream, the collective energy is waning.

?I?m just washing this one pot, I?m not actually going to do the dishes,? Tyler clarifies loudly from the sink, as limbs begin to sag and eyes droop.
When I finally leave around midnight to pedal back through the forest to my cabin, the scene surrounding the flickering fire in the living room is somewhat comical, considering the hard partying characters involved. Eric is curled up on one end of the sofa sleeping soundly, and Eli?s slumped over on the other end, cradling a pillow and snoring, while a still relatively chipper Tyler and Trevor survey the scene with something akin to disdain.

?Anybody want to play Monopoly?? Tyler calls out. ?Scrabble? Go Fish??

Where to stay

Metolius River Lodge Cabins
These rustic river-hugging cabins are a throwback to childhood summer camp, but with more refined amenities, like private decks and Jacuzzi tubs. If you want to re-create the guys? fishing trip experience, book the Royal Wulff ? a two bedroom, two-bath charmer with river views from every room and plenty of space in the kitchen for all of your whiskey.
metoliusriverlodges.com, 800-595-6290 ?

Lake Creek Lodge
Just a couple of miles from the Camp Sherman store, this homey, family-friendly resort maintains a small stable of comfortably quaint cabins overlooking lovely Lake Creek, a fully loaded rec room and a stocked trout pond for pint-sized fisherpeople-in-training. I stayed in Cabin 7, a cozy cubby complete with fireplace and scenic deck.

Black Butte Ranch
Once summer throngs retreat and the aspen groves work their magic, Black Butte is the height of autumn beauty and serenity. Sit on the porch of your townhouse with a glass of wine and stunning views of all three Sisters peaks, then take a leisurely bike ride around the working ranch. I highly recommend reserving Country House 71 ? views and wildlife-watching are unparalleled, and the cozy pub is but a five-minute walk.

Baird?s Cider

From the early-evening charcuterie and fish tales to the post-apple pie midnight slump, this feast?s tagline became ?top me up,? as the group bolstered Trevor Baird?s rich, deeply flavored, fresh-pressed apple cider with hearty splashes of House Spirits Distillery?s Slab Town Whiskey.
?
Baird cultivates a 500-tree Dayton apple orchard comprising vintage English and French cider varietals grafted with imported scion wood from Newberg?s now-shuttered White Oak Cider, as well as a few American heirloom cider apple varietals like Roxbury Russet and Hudson?s Golden Gem. It takes 12 pounds of apples, a hand-cranked Correll cider press and a lot of elbow grease to produce each gallon of fresh cider, which he sells at his farmers market booths through autumn ($7/half gallon). In late October, Baird totes the press right to the market, makes cider on the spot and sells it hot to grateful chilly fingered shoppers.

Having developed an interest in European-style hard ciders on a trip to England, Baird plans to bottle and sell hard cider this fall, under the label Farmhouse Cider. It will be available at the Baird farmers market booths and select local restaurants such
as Olympic Provisions in Portland and Red Hills Market in Dundee.

What they drank (with pairings):

The fish weren?t the only creatures submerged in the drink on this trip, thanks to Star Black ? wine director for Olympic Provisions, Clyde Common and the new Pepe le Moko ? who curated serious fine wine and spirits pairings to complement each course.

US: Iran missile test is 'pure fabrication'

?

U.S. officials tell NBC News that Iran's claim it conducted missile tests in the Strait of Hormuz Tuesday is "pure fabrication" and that there is no evidence to back up Iran's claims.

"The mid-range system ... is capable of intercepting targets at a range of 50 km (30 miles) and can fly at an altitude of 75,000 feet," state-run Press TV's website said.

A Senior Revolutionary Guard commander said Tuesday that Iran test-fired four anti-ship missiles that hit a "big target" the size of a warship simultaneously, causing it to sink in "50-seconds" in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to U.S. officials, there was no missile firing in or around the strait or the Persian Gulf.

In the past Iranians have released photos and video of missile firings claiming they were part of current exercises. It was later proven, however, that the images were actually from earlier missile tests but doctored to alter the background.

In one photo that claimed to show six missiles being fired simultaneously, it was proven all missiles were actually the images of the same missile photo-shopped across the landscape.

Some news outlets reported Tuesday morning that the Iranian missile test is evidence of the threat posed to U.S. warships in the region, and in direct response to the international mine-sweeping exercises being conducted 250 miles from Iran in the North Arabian Sea. Some reports said the alleged missile tests were an obvious show of force from Iran on the eve of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's United Nations General Assembly address Wednesday.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Haiti PM says cholera outbreak under control

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A cholera epidemic in Haiti that has killed thousands and been blamed on U.N. peacekeepers was "regrettable" but has been brought under control, the prime minister of the poor Caribbean nation said at the United Nations on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe met U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday, but he told Reuters they did not discuss accusations by some Haitians that Nepalese peacekeepers sparked the epidemic after camp latrines contaminated a river.

"This (the outbreak) is regrettable," Lamothe, who became prime minister in May, said during an interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

"Our duty is to take care of the people and to solve the problem and that's where we have been focusing our attention, while the U.N. is investigating the causes."

An independent panel appointed by Ban to study the epidemic issued a May 2011 report that the United Nations said did not determine conclusively how cholera was introduced into Haiti.

But the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in June 2011 found that evidence strongly suggested U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal were the source.

Lamothe said he and Ban "didn't discuss the cause, we discussed the treatment and going forward."

The cholera outbreak has sickened almost 600,000 people and killed more than 7,400 in Haiti since October 2010. Cholera is an infection that causes severe diarrhea and can lead to dehydration and death. It occurs in places with poor sanitation and can be treated by drinking clean fluids.

In a report to the U.N. Security Council last month, Ban said there had been an increase in the number of cholera cases since the rainy season began in early March and the World Health Organization projects up to 112,000 cases during 2012.

But Lamothe said the outbreak was "really under control" and said that the United Nations mission in Haiti, which began in 2004, had only helped the country and the government was "eternally grateful" for the world body's help.

"We like to think on the positive side, we are the eternal optimists," he said. "You need that in Haiti to run a country that's been mismanaged for the past 30 years. You need a lot of optimism and a lot of will to do the right thing."

STILL STRUGGLING

Haiti is still struggling to lift itself from the rubble left by an earthquake in January 2010 that killed about 300,000 people and left more than 1.5 million homeless. Lamothe said 1.2 million of those had been moved back into homes, while the United Nations said 390,000 were still living in tent camps.

Only half the $5.5 billion pledged by the international community at a 2010 fundraising conference has been delivered.

"We are working at remobilizing, re-energizing the donor community at least to fulfill the commitment they had made," Lamothe said. "Haiti's destruction was estimated at $12.5 billion, out of which right now we received a fraction of that."

"We want it to go through the Haitian government. The Haitian government will allocate it and work together with the different communities on the ground," he said.

Lamothe said 54 percent of Haitians were living in extreme poverty on less than $1 a day and during the next year he hope to reduce that to 40 percent. He said that while some aid groups were withdrawing he was not concerned Haiti was being forgotten.

"Usually a country is forgotten when things are doing better, so we like to think things are doing better," he said.

A U.N. peacekeeping force in Haiti was recently extended for another year, but the number of authorized troops and police will be reduced by about 1,700 to 8,800 by June 2013.

U.N. peacekeepers - who helped maintain security, especially during elections plagued by fraud and unrest - are gradually handing over responsibility to the Haitian National Police.

"We want our police to be up to par and when that happens in three or four years, then we will be ready," Lamothe said.

Ease Into 5K Is a Powerful Running Coach in Your Pocket

Most of the fitness apps out there for iOS have three basic functions: They track your performance, integrate with your playlists to give you some music to listen to, and offer the ability to share what you've done on Facebook or Twitter. Ease Into 5K adds another layer to that formula: a ready-made training plan that builds from a relatively easy workout up to the target distance of 5 kilometers, or roughly 3 miles.

Skinnymom and Pregnancy | Skinny | Skinny Mom | How to get ...

I just wanted to share with everyone how thankful I have been for Skinnymom.com during my pregnancy! I actually discovered the website before I was pregnant, because I have always been a huge fan of Brooke and loved watching her at the Bengals games and followed her throughout her fitness competitions! When I had learned that she had started a new website I of course had to support her.

Once finding out about my pregnancy, I knew I did not want to ?eat for two?, especially after watching way too many friends and family struggle with weight issues after their babies. Skinny Mom had so many great exercises, even for pregnant mamas, but for me the recipes were a lifesaver! I found that I could still eat things I enjoyed without over indulging and feeling miserable after. My favorite recipe is the stuffed peppers, they are so delicious!

If I could give advice to any pregnant or post-pregnant moms out there, it would be to eat healthy, exercise, and find a great support website. It will pay off in the end!

Just wanted to give a big shout out and THANKS to Brooke and all the Skinny Moms out there. I am now 40 weeks and have gained 30 pounds and my OBGYN compliments me all the time on how healthy my baby girl and I are. I couldn?t have done it without this website and am now so very grateful to be a mom blogger!

The next step: using Skinny Mom for my post-partum weightloss! :)

Do You Dress Up Your Pets For Halloween?

Flickr user plasticrevolver

I have to be honest, I?m on the fence when it comes to dressing up your pet for Halloween.
It can be cute, like the little ?hot dog? above, or it can border on creepy?I?ve never really comfortable with dogs in tutus, for example.?Then I saw this ad this morning and literally laughed out loud:

?

First of all, it?s definitely clever, but what made me laugh even more was picturing someone trying to get their cat into that. Dogs usually grudgingly go along when you try to make them do something they don?t want to. But if you?ve ever owned a cat, you know that they are, let?s say ?willful? creatures. If anyone decides to get that costume and try to put their cat into it, please take picturtes or a video and send it!
