Parents Want Sex Education in Schools ? MomsRising Blog

Last week I was watching the popular TV show The Middle, and parents Mike and Frankie Heck were struggling to remember if they?d ever spoken to their kids about sex.? ?That?s what schools are for,? Frankie, the mom joked.

Yikes! ?The good news is, unlike in the show, 90 percent of parents have talked to their children about topics related to sex, according to a Planned Parenthood nationally representative poll of more than 2,000 parents and teens.? The survey also found that parents want help from schools getting these important messages across to young people, and that teens would also like some more guidance in learning about sex.? The vast majority of parents (94 percent) and teens (88 percent) said it?s important that sex education be taught in middle schools, and of 96 percent of parents and 93 percent of teens reported that it?s important that high schools teach sex education.

Parents also want sex education that covers a broad range of topics, including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), healthy relationships, abstinence, birth control, and sexual orientation.

Despite this tremendous desire for comprehensive sex education, if you watch the news or pay attention to a small, but vocal, group of opponents, you might get the impression that few parents support it and that they believe school-based sex education undermines their work at home. ?In truth, however, most parents think comprehensive sex education supports their efforts to make sure their teens have the information they need to establish healthy relationships and avoid STDs and unintended pregnancy.

And it?s not just parents who believe in the importance of sex education in schools. ?More than 140 organizations support comprehensive sex education, including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics, both of which recommend that schools implement comprehensive, developmentally appropriate sexuality education programs.

Approximately 750,000 teenagers in the United States will become pregnant this year, and half of the 19 million cases of new sexually transmitted diseases that occur each year happen among 15- to 24-year-olds. ?As a nation, we have a lot of work to do to give young people the tools they need to protect themselves and make good decisions about sex. ?School-based sex education can help. ?In fact, a CDC report shows that the teen birthrate is lower in states where students receive comprehensive, evidence-based sex education.?? And hundreds of studies have shown that comprehensive sex education programs are more likely than programs that teach abstinence alone to help young people wait to have sex, use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do, and limit the number of partners they have.

As parents, there?s a lot we can do to ensure our teens receive effective sex education in school.? We can get involved in the PTA, work as advocates in our communities, or join local school health education committees or the school board to ensure that young people are receiving the important, accurate information they need.

One parent in Utah, the mother of two teenage girls, attended committee meetings and supported her daughter when she testified against an abstinence-only bill that would have made all sex education classes ?opt-in? instead of ?opt-out? and prohibited any discussions of contraception or homosexuality.? Tens of thousands of Utah parents also signed a petition that was delivered to the governor.? Thanks to these parents, the governor eventually vetoed this harmful bill.

Parents and schools can and should work together to teach our kids about sex and sexuality.? We owe it to our teens to ensure they have enough information and resources to make informed decisions and stay healthy.

Northeast back to business after Sandy's hard hit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of people across the U.S. Northeast stricken by massive storm Sandy will attempt to resume normal lives on Wednesday as companies, markets and airports reopen, despite grim projections of power and mass transit outages lasting several more days.

With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama will visit storm-ravaged areas of the New Jersey shore, where Sandy made landfall on Monday. His guide will be Republican Governor Chris Christie, a vocal backer of presidential challenger Mitt Romney who has nevertheless praised Obama and the federal response to the storm.

Sandy, which has killed 40 people in the United States, pushed inland and dumped snow in the Appalachian Mountains. Its remains slowed over Pennsylvania, and it was expected to move north toward western New York and Canada, the National Weather Service said.

Blizzard warnings and coastal flood warnings for the shores of the Great Lakes were in effect.

Battered by a record storm surge of nearly 14 feet of water, swaths of New York City remained submerged under several feet of water. In the city's borough of Staten Island, police used helicopters to pluck stranded residents from rooftops.

Across the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, members of the National Guard arrived to help residents pump floodwater from their homes, the city said on Twitter.

More than 8.2 million homes and businesses remained without electricity across several states as trees toppled by fierce winds tore down power lines.

In New Jersey, Christie said it could take seven to 10 days before power is restored statewide.

Subway tracks and commuter tunnels under New York City, which carry several million people a day, were under several feet of water.

In the lower half of Manhattan, a quarter million residents remained without power after a transformer explosion at a Con Edison substation Monday night.

"I'M ALL COLD INSIDE"

On Manhattan's Lower East Side, one of the neighborhoods without power, 87-year-old Thea Lucas said she came outside from her apartment, where she lives alone, to warm herself up with a walk and to feed seven cats that she looks after.

"I can make hot water," she said. "But there is no heating and I'm all cold inside."

In Brooklyn, a large tree fell on a house belonging to Jean-Claude Mersier, blocking the front entrance, breaking windows and crushing a car.

As he hauled away its branches, Mersier said police told him it might take two weeks to a month before someone could come to remove the biggest sections of the tree.

"The storm has not been good to us," he said.

In Greenwich Village, where downed trees littered the streets, residents gathered around a neighborhood police station to use its power outlets to charge their cell phones.

New York City likely will struggle without subways for days, authorities said. Buses were operating on a limited basis and many residents were walking long distances or scrambling to grab scarce taxi cabs on the streets.

In Hoboken, a fleet of yellow cabs could be seen submerged in water nearly as high as the vehicles' windows.

Despite much of the city's financial district being damaged by flooding, financial markets were scheduled to reopen on Wednesday as well. How much activity could take place remained to be seen, however, as many workers may be unlikely to get to work without subways and commuter railroads from the suburbs.

In New Jersey, Christie took a helicopter tour of devastation on Tuesday along the shore, where boats were adrift, boardwalks were washed away and roads were blocked by massive sand drifts. He stopped in the badly damaged resort towns of Belmar and Avalon.

"I was just here walking this place this summer, and the fact that most of it is gone is just incredible," he said at one stop.

The storm killed 22 people in New York City, among 27 total in New York state, while six died in New Jersey. Seven other states reported fatalities. One disaster modeling company said Sandy may have caused up to $15 billion in insured losses.

Sandy hit the East Coast with a week to go to the November 6 presidential election, dampening an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting and raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS TO RESUME

Obama faces political danger if the government fails to respond well, as was the case with his predecessor George W. Bush's botched handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Obama and Romney put campaigning on hold for a second day on Tuesday but Romney planned to hold rallies in the battleground state of Florida on Wednesday and Obama seemed likely to resume campaigning on Thursday.

Sandy became the biggest storm to hit the United States in generations when it crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds on Monday near the New Jersey gambling resort of Atlantic City.

Two of the area's major airports - John F. Kennedy International in New York and Newark Liberty International - planned to reopen with limited service on Wednesday.

New York's LaGuardia Airport, the third of the airports that serve the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed.

Nearly 19,000 flights have been canceled since Sunday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.com.

On Broadway, the Theater League announced that most shows would resume performances on Wednesday. Shows had been canceled since Sunday due to the storm.

Sandy forced New York City to postpone its traditional Halloween parade, which had been set for Wednesday night in Greenwich Village.

Potential way to repair brain damage in multiple sclerosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have discovered that blocking a certain enzyme in the brain can help repair the brain damage associated with multiple sclerosis and a range of other neurological disorders.

The discovery could have major implications for multiple sclerosis, complications from premature birth and other disorders and diseases caused by demyelination -- a process where the insulation-like sheath surrounding nerve cells in the brain becomes damaged or destroyed. Demyelination disrupts the ability of nerve cells to communicate with each other, and produces a range of motor, sensory and cognitive problems in MS and other disorders.

The study was published this week in the online edition of the Annals of Neurology. The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by Larry Sherman, Ph.D., who is a professor of cell and development biology at OHSU and a senior scientist in the Division of Neuroscience at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

"What this means is that we have identified a whole new target for drugs that might promote repair of the damaged brain in any disorder in which demyelination occurs," Sherman said. "Any kind of therapy that can promote remyelination could be an absolute life-changer for the millions of people suffering from MS and other related disorders."

Sherman's lab has been studying MS and other conditions where myelin is damaged for more than 14 years. In 2005, he and his research team discovered that a sugar molecule, called hyaluronic acid, accumulates in areas of damage in the brains of humans and animals with demyelinating brain and spinal cord lesions. Their findings at the time, published in Nature Medicine, suggested that hyaluronic acid itself prevented remyelination by preventing cells that form myelin from differentiating in areas of brain damage.

The new study shows that the hyaluronic acid itself does not prevent the differentiation of myelin-forming cells. Rather, breakdown products generated by a specific enzyme that chews up hyaluronic acid -- called a hyaluronidase -- contribute to the remyelination failure.

This enzyme is highly elevated in MS patient brain lesions and in the nervous systems of animals with an MS-like disease. The research team, which included OHSU pediatric neurologist Stephen Back, M.D., and OHSU neuroscientist Steve Matsumoto, Ph.D., found that by blocking hyaluronidase activity, they could promote myelin-forming cell differentiation and remyelination in the mice with the MS-like disease. Most significantly, the drug that blocked hyaluronidase activity led to improved nerve cell function.

The next step is to develop drugs that specifically target this enzyme. "The drugs we used in this study could not be used to treat patients because of the serious side effects they might cause," said Sherman. "If we can block the specific enzyme that is contributing to remyelination failure in the nervous system, it would likely cause few, if any, side effects."

Sherman and other researchers at the ONPRC are uniquely positioned to test newly developed drugs for their safety and effectiveness in nonhuman primates at ONPRC that spontaneously develop an MS-like disease. If they find a drug that is effective in these monkeys, they will be in a good position to test such drugs in patients.

Sherman cautioned that the discovery does not necessarily signal a cure for MS. Many other factors can contribute to the problems associated MS and other demyelinating diseases, he said. But discovering the actions of this enzyme -- and finding a way to block it -- "could at the very least lead to new ways to promote the repair of brain and spinal cord damage either by targeting this enzyme alone or by inhibiting the enzyme in conjunction with other therapies."

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Fast Forward, LLC (a subsidiary of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society), the Laura Fund for Multiple Sclerosis Research, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Refineries scale back in advance of storm

Oil refineries on the East Coast of the U.S. are shutting down or throttling back in advance of a massive storm.

A Philadelphia refinery that is the biggest on the East Coast was scaling back. And the second-biggest East Coast refinery, a Phillips 66 operation in Linden, N.J., is shut down.

Oil prices have not moved much. They're down 30 cents to $85.98 in morning trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Traders are balancing two big risks. One is that the storm will damage refineries, , which normally would drive up gasoline prices. But, businesses are shutting down and people are staying home, which would reduce gasoline demand ? and prices.

Nationally, gasoline prices at the pump fell a half-penny from Sunday, to $3.453 per gallon.

The 41 Concepts You Need to Know about Human Resource ...

1.????? Recruitment :

Recruitment involves identifying the prospective candidates and inducing them to apply for the job. The process of recruitment starts with identifying the number and type of vacancies available in the organization.

There are two sources of man power namely.

i)?????? Internal

ii)????? External

Internal sources are from within the organization while external source are outside the organization.

?

2.????? Selection :

To select is to choose the best or the most suitable candidate. Since many people apply for the job, selection becomes difficult the organization is interested in selecting the best, the most appropriate person for the job.

Many organisations have laid down their own procedures for selection. The importance of various skills depend upon the type of job. For example, for a teaching post communication skills would be given more weightage, while incase of selection for the post of police office physical strength along with mental alertness and presence of mind become crucial.

?

3.????? HRM :

????????? Human resource management includes everything from planning the human resource; recruiting and developing them through continuous training. It may also involve retrenching the workers if management feels it essential to achieve objectives. Managing human resource is quite complex in India as their exist lot of disparities due to differences in cultures, educational background, income levels etc. It may also be called as personnel management, manpower management etc.

?

4.????? Personnel Management :

????????? ?Personnel management is the planning, organising, directing, and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration, maintenance and separation of human resources to the end that individual, organizational, and societal objectives are accomplished?.

?

5.????? Human Resource Planning :

Geisler defines manpower planning as, ?Manpower planning is the process (including forecasting, developing, implementing and controlling) by which a firm ensures that it has a right number of people and right kind of people, at the right place, at the right time, doing things for which they are economically most useful.?

?

6.????? Training :- Training is the act or process of teaching or learning skill, discipline etc. while development is a stage of growth or advancement.

Even a professionally qualified person may have to be provided training in order to enable him to upgrade his skill and to perform the work in an efficient manner.

Training can be defined as ?a planned process to modify attitude, knowledge or skill, behaviour through learning, experience to achieve effective performance in an activity or range of activities.?

?

7.????? Performance Appraisal :-

????????? Performance appraisal involves evaluation of employee?s performance at the work place. It is necessary to evaluate employee?s performance continuously. It enables the organization to find out whose performance is upto the mark and who are under performing.

The extent to which the training should be provided, the attributes present in the employees, the standard to be fixed in future etc. can be decided after performance appraisal. Performance appraisal facilitates promotion, transfer and even fixation of employee?s salary.

?

8.????? Participative Management :

????????? Participative management is based on the concept that a worker invests his labour and ties his fate to his place of work and therefore he has a right to be associated in the process of decision making and influencing various aspects of company policy. The champions of industrial democracy argue that a worker is not a slave. Like any other citizen he has opinion of his own which should be taken into account when decisions are made and policies are formulated. Participation actually suggests mental and emotional involvement and not only physical presence. Workers participate collectively as a group through their representatives. Participative management is based on four pillars. These are:

(a) ??? communication

(b) ??? consultation

(c) ??? codetermination and

(d) ??? self-management.

Participative management can be introduced at four different levels viz., shopfloor, plant, department and corporate levels.

?

9.????? CAREER PLANNING :

Every employee has a desire to grow and scale new heights in his workplace continuously. If there are enough opportunities, he can pursue his career goals and exploit his potential fully. He feels highly motivated when the organization shows him a clear path as to how he can meet his personal ambitions while trying to realize the corporate goals.

Career planning seek to meet the following objectives :

1.????? To attract competent persons and to retain them in the organization.

2.????? To provide suitable promotional opportunities.

3.????? To enable the employees to develop and make them ready to meet the future challenges.

4.????? To increase the utilization of managerial reserves within the organisation.

5.????? To correct employee placement.

6.????? To reduce dissatisfaction and turnover.

7.????? To improve motivation and morale.

?

10.??? Industrial Relations :

????????? Industrial Relation is a relation between employer and employees, employees and employees and employees and trade unions. and the ?process by which people and their organisations interact at the place of work to establish the terms and conditions of employment.?

The significance of industrial relations can be summarized below :

1.????? It establishes industrial democracy.

2.????? It contributes to economic growth and development.

3.????? It improves morale of the work force.

4.????? It ensures optimum use of scare resources.

5.????? It discourages unfair practices on the part of both management and unions.

6.????? It prompts enactment of sound labour legislation.

7.????? It facilitates change.

?

11.??? Trade Union :

????????? According to Edwin. B. Flippo, ? A labour union or trade union is an organisation of workers formed to promote, protect and improve, through collective action, the social, economic and political interest of its members.?

Trade unions exist because an individual worker has very little power to influence decisions that are made about his or her job. By joining together with other workers, there is more chance of having a voice and influence.

Trade union are formal organisation of wage earner. They bring unity and understanding among workers. They are not against employee or the society at large. They are essentially for avoiding the employee of workers and also for promoting their welfare.

12.??? Personnel Manual :

Every organisation has its well prepared personnel policies. Such polices deal with different aspects such as employee benefit, employee benefit, employee relations, employee discipline, policy of the company & so on. A document / booklet which contains the details of personnel policies of an organisation is called personnel policy manual.

Reputed companies publish personnel policy manuals for the convenience of their manager, supervisor & employee. The personnel policy manual is written primarily for the information & guidance of manager. They are supposed to know the personnel policies and take administrative decision on relating to policies such as recruitment, promotions, transfer, salary etc.

?

13.??? Assessment Centre :

????????? Assessment centre was started as a method to hire executives. Now it is used in order to evaluate supervisory staff also. As the name indicates, it has control location where managers come together to discuss job-related exercises to be evaluated by trained observers. The evaluation stretches from 1 to 3 days to present fairly good assessment of managers? performance on job-related exercises. Assesses are asked to participate in work groups without leaders, role playing, in-basket exercises and computer simulations.

?

14.??? Downsizing :

????????? In any business organization, there should be adequate staff (employees) as per the need. Excess employees or inadequate employees are undesirable as both the situations are harmful. Zombies: Facts keep story of undead alive

From "World War Z" to "The Walking Dead" to "Shaun of the Dead" to "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and countless brain-dead rip-offs, zombies ? re-animated corpses with an unstoppable craving for human flesh, especially brains ? have invaded pop culture like never before. For staggering, slow-moving monsters, zombies have become quite a force in the entertainment industry over the past decade.

Though George Romero's 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead" is often considered to be the original modern zombie film, the first actually appeared nearly 40 years earlier in "White Zombie," starring B?la Lugosi as an evil voodoo priest in Haiti who zombifies a beautiful young woman. In the years since, only a handful of zombie films have returned to their Haitian origins ? most notably "The Serpent and the Rainbow."

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "zombie" first appeared in English around 1810 when historian Robert Southey mentioned it in his book "History of Brazil."

But this "Zombi" was not the familiar brain-eating manlike monstrosity but instead a West African deity. The word later came to suggest the vital, human force leaving the shell of a body, and ultimately a creature human in form but lacking the self-awareness, intelligence, and a soul. It was imported to Haiti and elsewhere from Africa through the slave trade.

Voodoo or science?
Everyone knows the fictional zombies, but fewer know the facts about zombies. To many people, both in Haiti and elsewhere, zombies are very real. They are not a joke; they are something to be taken seriously. Belief in magic and witchcraft is widespread throughout Haiti and the Caribbean, often in the form of religions such as voodoo and santeria.

Haitian zombies were said to be people brought back from the dead (and sometimes controlled) through magical means by voodoo priests called bokors or houngan. Sometimes the zombification was done as punishment (striking fear in those who believed that they could be abused even after death), but often the zombies were said to have been used as slave labor on farms and sugarcane plantations.

In 1980, one mentally ill man even claimed to have been held captive as a zombie worker for two decades, though he could not lead investigators to where he had worked, and his story was never verified.

For decades Westerners considered zombies little more than fictional movie monsters, but that assumption was questioned in the 1980s when a scientist named Wade Davis claimed to have found a powder that could create zombies, thus providing a scientific basis for zombie stories. Davis didn't believe in voodoo magic.

But he did believe that he had found something that could poison victims into a zombie-like state: a powerful neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, which can be found in several animals including pufferfish. He claimed to have infiltrated secret societies of bokors and obtained several samples of the zombie-making powder, which were later chemically analyzed.

Davis wrote a book on the topic, "The Serpent and the Rainbow," which was later made into a horror film. For a while Davis was widely touted as the man who had scientifically solved the mystery of zombies.

However Davis' claims were later challenged by skeptical scientists who regarded his methods as unscientific, pointing out that the samples of the zombie powder he provided were inconsistent, and that the amounts of neurotoxin contained in those samples were not high enough to create zombies.

    1. Sleuth finds the truth in ghost stories

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Paranormal investigator Joe Nickell has busted a lot of ghostly myths over the past 40 years ? but the spookiest part of his job comes when he actually catches a ghost red-handed.

    2. How to eat a Triceratops in 4 easy steps
    3. Why dinosaurs showed off their feathers
    4. Fukushima fish still radioactive

Furthermore, the dosages used by the bokors would need to be exact, since too much of the toxin could easily kill a person. Others pointed out nobody had ever found any of the many supposed plantations filled with zombie laborers on the small island country.

In a second book, "Passage of Darkness: The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie," Davis acknowledged problems with his theories and refuted some of the more sensational claims attributed to him. Still, he insisted, the Haitian belief in zombies could be based on the (admittedly rare) cases where a person was poisoned by tetrodotoxin and later revived inside the coffin and taken from the grave.

Furthermore, he added, there was much more to the zombie phenomenon than simply the powder; it was only one part of a deep-rooted sociocultural belief in the power of witchcraft. In Haitian culture, voodoo priests do much more than create zombies; they are said to bring both blessings and curses through magic.

Thus the stories of the real-life Haitian zombies arose like a corpse from the grave, and eventually fell like a zombie shot in the head. Though zombies remain a myth in real life, there are more than enough of the fictional ones to satisfy the gorehounds and zombie fans for ages to come.

Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) for ... - Personal Finance

Consequent to an amendment in SEBI Regulations, from November 2011, Mutual Funds send investors one single consolidated account statement (CAS) every month, detailing all transactions of the previous month across all schemes of all mutual funds. Some queries on this statement are answered below.?Investors can get more information on the CAS at the AMFI Web site.

What is the Industry Consolidated Account Statement (CAS)?

The Mutual Fund Industry Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) is a single account statement that consolidates financial transactions for a month in all transacted folios of an investor across all schemes of all mutual funds.

It is issued once a month, on or before the tenth of the month, in respect of financial transactions carried out in the previous calendar month across all mutual funds in India. CAS is generated uniquely only if the first and joint holders are identical in all folios and all have provided valid PAN. For e.g. if you hold a folio singly and in addition another Folio jointly with your wife as second holder, CAS will not be issued aggregating both Folios.

A monthly CAS will include only folios that have valid PAN details and in which financial transactions have taken place during the month. For example, if an investor has five folios and transacts in only two folios in a month, the CAS for the month will include only the two folios and not the others.

Apart from details of financial transactions, the statement will contain opening and closing unit balances of these folios, the registered email ID, mode of holding, KYC status and the nominee registration status.

Please note that transactions in folios held in demat mode will not be included in the CAS as separate statements are issued by the depository participants.

If there is no transaction in any folio for a period of six months, a statement will be sent at the end of every six months.

Investors may note that a duplicate CAS will not be available in physical form. However, investors can request the Mutual Funds/Registrars for individual statements.

Alternately, investors with registered email ID may use mailback services offered by Registrars for a variety of electronic statement options.

It may be noted that AMCs will continue to send a separate individual AMC branded first account statement for a new folio, with all personal details registered in the folio to help investors verify the same. Folios with email IDs will continue to get regular fund specific account statements electronically after each financial transaction within five working days.

What information would be included in a CAS?

CAS will include details of all financial transactions, such as purchase including NFO transactions, redemption including maturity of FMPs, switches, systematic transactions such as SIP, SWP, STP, dividend payouts or reinvestments, etc.

Non-financial transactions, such as updation of address, bank details, registration of nominee, etc, will not be included.

Confirmation for these will be sent separately to investors. Apart from non-financial transactions, sensitive information, such as registered bank account details, PAN and contact numbers will not be included in CAS.

Whom do I contact if any folio/transaction is not included?

Investors may check if their PAN is registered in the folio for all holders and contact the concerned Mutual Fund if a particular transaction/folio is not reflected or if there is any discrepancy in the statement.

What happens if an investor has registered different addresses in folios?

PAN-based ?know your customer? (KYC) is now mandatory for all purchases and addresses would be updated in folios. CAS will be sent to the KYC registered address of the investor.

However, if KYC is not updated in any of the folios considered for consolidation, then the CAS will be sent to the address available in the folio where the investor has made the last transaction in the month. Mutual Funds strongly advise investors to update their PAN and KYC details in all folios.

Bombings, clashes leave Syria truce in tatters

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian warplane flattened a three-story building, suspected rebels detonated a deadly car bomb and both sides traded gunfire in several hotspots across the country Saturday, activists said, leaving a U.N.-backed holiday truce in tatters on its second day.

The unraveling of the cease-fire marked the latest setback to ending Syria's civil war through diplomacy. Foreign military intervention is unlikely, raising the grim prospect of a drawn-out war of attrition between President Bashar Assad and those trying to topple him.

The proposed four-day truce during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha had been a long shot from the start since international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi failed to get solid commitments from all combatants. Fighting dropped off in the first hours of the cease-fire Friday, but by the end of the day, activists said 151 people had been killed in bombings and shootings, a standard daily toll in Syria.

On Saturday, the first regime airstrike since the start of the truce reduced a three-story building in the Arbeen suburb of the capital, Damascus to rubble, killing at least eight men, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from activists.

In the remote eastern town of Deir el-Zour, assailants detonated a car bomb near a military police compound, then opened fire at those rushing to the scene, killing a total of eight people and causing extensive damage, the Observatory said. Syrian media denied there were casualties. The attack bore the hallmarks of Jabhat al-Nusra, a radical rebel-allied Islamic group that has rejected the cease-fire.

The Syrian air force also bombed rebel positions Saturday during a fierce battle for control over the main road linking Aleppo, Syria's largest city, with the capital, activists said. Earlier this month, rebels seized Maaret al-Numan, a town along the highway and besieged a nearby military base, disrupting regime supplies to embattled Aleppo. The Syrian air force has responded with sustained bombing raids on area villages.

By nightfall Saturday, at least 49 people had been killed across Syria, including 16 Syrian soldiers, activists said. The Observatory reported deadly regime shelling and sniper attacks in several locations, while Syrian state-media said rebels ambushed a number of military positions.

Military analyst Joe Holliday said neither side has an incentive to halt fighting, noting that rebels have disrupted regime supply routes to the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. "The regime can't accept the current military status quo without a fight and the rebels have no reason to since they believe they have the momentum," said Holliday, a researcher at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington.

Brahimi's spokesman declined comment Saturday on the apparent failure of his initiative. It's not clear what Brahimi's next move could be, since the international community is divided over the Syria conflict that erupted 19 months ago.

Assad allies Russia and China have shielded the regime against harsher U.N. Security Council sanctions, while the rebels' foreign backers have shied away from military intervention.

The U.S., meanwhile, is averse to sending strategic weapons to help the rebels break the battlefield stalemate, fearing they will fall into the hands of militant Islamists, who are increasingly active in rebel ranks. The al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, for example, is believed to be on the front lines in Aleppo and near Maaret al-Numan.

When Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy, first floated the idea of a holiday truce, he did not say what his long-term plan was. Even a temporary reduction in violence during such a truce would not have been a springboard for talks between Assad and the opposition on ending the war. Syria's opposition says it will only negotiate if Assad resigns, a step the Syrian leader has refused to take.

Some said Brahimi's initiative allowed a paralyzed international community to show briefly that it was doing something to try to end the war that has claimed more than 35,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Doha Center said the truce at least "provides the illusion of movement, that something is being done, that the international community is still trying to find a solution."

The U.S. said Friday that both sides have violated the holiday cease-fire, but singled out the regime. In the previous attempted truce six months ago, the Syrian military violated key provisions, such as withdrawing troops from urban centers, and was widely held responsible for the collapse of the cease-fire.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi on Saturday accused the U.S. of being one-sided. He said Syria remains committed to halting military operations. He said all cease-fire violations were the result of attacks, most of them carried out by organizations that originally rejected the truce, an apparent reference to Jabhat al-Nusra. The spokesman said Syria has sent messages to the U.N. Security Council concerning the violations.

Syrian state media accused the rebels of breaking the truce from the start.

One of the deadliest attacks Friday was a car bomb attack in a residential area of Damascus.

The state-run news agency SANA on Saturday quoted the director of Damascus Hospital, Dr. Adib Mahmoud, as saying the hospital received 15 dead civilians, including eight children, and 92 wounded, among them 65 children. Activists had put the death toll at 11.

Also Saturday, Lebanese broadcaster LBC TV said journalist Fidaa Itani, one of its employees covering Syria's civil war, was detained by the rebels and is being held in the town of Azaz near the Turkish border.

The station quoted a local rebel leader in Azaz, Abu Ibrahim, as saying that rebels suspected Itani after he filmed many videos of rebels operations in Aleppo. Itani's Lebanese cell phone was closed when The Associated Press tried to reach him.

The area also was the site of the May kidnapping of 11 Shiite Lebanese pilgrims who were on their way home from Iran. Two have been released while rebels say they will hold the others until Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group, apologizes to the Syrian people for supporting Assad.

3 Components of Online Marketing Success | Business 2 Community

3 components of online marketing successYou know you need to market your business online, but the process can feel daunting and overwhelming. It doesn?t have to be that way! Think of your website, your content and social media as a three-legged stool supporting your business growth.

Web Design

Your website should be the hub of your online activity. It is like a salesperson that both generates leads and builds relationships for you around the clock. A good site will make it clear who your business serves, what products or services you provide, and the talents and expertise that you have to offer. A clean, professional, and appealing website design creates a good first impression and builds trust with your prospects (a poorly designed site may, of course, do the exact opposite!).

Your website should also be optimized for search engines and online marketing. In this day and age, this includes understanding what your users are searching for, making sure that your site can be viewed on mobile devices, and ensuring that there?s strong social media integration. Unfortunately, many websites that look good miss many of these marketing basics and therefore don?t function as effectively as they can.

The goal with the content and structure of your website should be to attract visitors, provide them with relevant content, encourage them to connect with you, and then take the action that you want them to take, whether that?s contacting you for a consultation or signing up for your newsletter.

One of the most important components necessary to make your website an effective online marketing hub will be your content strategy.

Content Marketing

Content marketing consists of creating and delivering content that is relevant to your prospects and helps to meet your business goals. Content can be any medium including video, podcasts, slides or text. The goal of your content strategy is to create information that encourages prospects to build a relationship with you. Your content should be actionable and shareable; it should ask the reader to do something (like fill out a form) in order to learn more from you and be easy to share on social media. You should make it interesting enough to encourage others to share your posts and spread the word about your website.

One way to think about the content that you can develop is to reflect on the questions that your current and prospective clients continually ask you. What are the questions that come up frequently? What are the issues that people struggle with? How can you share your knowledge and expertise to address these questions and issues? All of this will feed into your content marketing.

When you write for your business blog, think about addressing one specific issue per post. You should also give some thought to the keywords your audience will be searching for (a good website will have Google analytics set up, which will show you the search terms that people are using to find you already!). Choose one or two keywords or phrases to focus on in each blog post or resource. Don?t try to cram every keyword in every article. You should also be adding new content regularly.

Social Media

As you create new content, let people know about it by sharing it via your social networks. Social media is an excellent way to drive traffic to your website. Aside from your latest content, you can update social media sites with quick tips and links to more information on your site. The goal for your social media activities is to connect with your audience and drive traffic back to your website; this could come from both current clients who continue to learn from you and from qualified leads who may be likely to hire you or buy from you.

Social media marketing will qualify traffic for you. Joining groups and participating in conversations around a specific topic will ensure that the people you are interacting with are interested in what you have to offer.

Using social media, you also create an opportunity for others to share their experience with your company and drive traffic. People are far more likely to trust a peer recommendation than advertising. According to a Neilsen study, 90% of consumers trust a testimonial from a peer. Compare that to just 14% of consumers who trust advertisements. Use that to your advantage by encouraging interaction with your company on social media.

Don?t let overwhelm deter you from creating an effective online marketing presence! A solid website, good content and targeted social media usage will support your business growth. If you need help creating the website and social media strategies you need for success, hire a professional. Your business is worth it.
