How NASA Uses Astronaut Pee to Hunt Osteoporosis [Science]

When astronauts venture into space, their bones degrade because of the microgravity conditions they encounter. Currently, such bone wastage is usually diagnosed by scans—so NASA developed a new test which analyzes urine to spot bone loss in its early stages. More »

Four Tips On Selling At Real Auctions | Online Business Article ...

?

Have you noticed any of the auction TV shows? Well, since they seem to be so very popular, it appears that lots of people now want to know how to sell at real auctions.

Learning how to sell at auction is never about mindlessly throwing some antiques into the car and entrusting it with some auctioneer. Take a little time to really understand how it all works, you can be far more effective as a seller.

Here are a few ideas for newcomers to this type of business.

First: Be certain that your inventory is the right fit for the auctioneer and company you want work with.

It?s important to not haul a bunch of stuff to the place without first attending one of their earlier auctions. It?s important to get a feel for the type of things the company usually sells. As one example, at one particular auction hall it was not unusual for the people to offer live chickens, and plumbing. This would definitely not be the correct venue for offering your hip-hop collection. However, the spare camper parts that you found at some garage sale might be perfect for folks at this place.

Number two: Gain an understanding of all the terms of service of the auction company.

Stop by the site before you commit. Find out when the best times are to visit. Don?t just stop by when an auction is scheduled. Call ahead first.

Find out about policies and other rules. Another thing to ask is stuff like this: Does the company send your check? What happens in the event one of your items doesn?t sell? Does he or she need for you to remove unsold items? Will he attempt to combine it with another item for sale?

Having a grasp of the company?s tactics ahead of time helps keep you from being disappointed when it is finally time to receive your payment.

Third Tip: Make sure the auctioneer has some understanding of the types of things you are selling.

What is significant about this?

Even if it seems perfectly obvious to you that the antique doll you are dropping off is rare and valuable, bear in mind that the auctioneer might not be aware of this. Jot down anything different about your items, and keep the documentation with the auctioneer. The auction hall could very well determine that this is something to highlight in the auction listing.

For example: Is that print a gift from someone famous? Is a special event associated with it? If there is, by all means, mention it!

Also, if the company doesn?t really know the true value of whatever you?re bringing, it is more difficult to talk it up accurately. Events like this move right through the inventory, so the more someone knows about the inventory that?s up for sale, well, that will be good for all of you.

Fourth Tip: It is important to present your inventory nicely.

Most people don?t want to paw through lots bursting with dirty inventory expecting to see that there may be something worth bidding on. It?s easy enough to make the things appear organized.

And please remember: The more you understand how to sell at auction, the more adept you will be at it.

We film excellent videos for individuals in the work of buying and selling inventory. This one illustrates a clear example of how to present things at a genuine country auction: One of Our Auction Strategies. For other fun tips on buying or selling at auctions, on Craigslist, etc., visit us here!

Creating Successful Relationships Through Proven Communication ...

?

This is guest post by Dr. Georgianna Donadio, the author of Changing Behavior?????

Nothing is more critical to our health than our relationships and nothing is more critical to our relationships than how we communicate. How often have you had a difficult discussion with someone that didn?t go as you intended or left a meeting with an important person in your life unsatisfied?
To change these experiences, the answer lies in having the right communication skills and tools that enable us to respond appropriately in a way that is positive for both us, and the other person. These same tools can transform how we behave in relationships and have been shown to lead to more successful and more fulfilling relationships.

A study at Brigham Young University factoring in 148 studies involving over 300,000 subjects concluded that friends and social relationships, in addition to enhancing our health also appear to enhance our longevity.
Behavior change can seem scary or complicated. If the payoff however, is big enough in terms of your own personal health and your loved ones overall well-being, wouldn?t the time and energy you put into changing your behavior be worth the reward?
The subject of how to successfully change our behaviors is something that has been widely studied and researched for decades. Most of the resulting models of behavior change, however, have not been successful in creating lasting change. Until now.? A bestselling, award winning book, Changing Behavior: Immediately Transform Your Relationships with Easy to Learn, Proven Communication Skills, by medical educator and researcher, Dr. Georgianna Donadio, focuses provides easy to learn and proven skills that any of us can apply to all types of relationships to create more successful outcomes.
Dr Donadio?s book offers 12 steps to immediately changing how you relate to others and how they relate to you.? Step one begins with recognizing that 50% of the time 90% of us are not focused or paying attention to the conversations ? according to a recent Harvard study. When we are with another person our full attention should be on them and not on their inner dialogue about what they are thinking or what they want to say next. Closed body language, looking at our watch, playing with our hair and so forth, send the message that we are not paying attention and that we not interested in what the other person has to say.
As we all want to be valued and know what it feels like to have someone not pay attention to us, when we shift our focus from ourselves to paying attention to the person we are with, the conversation and relationship flourish. Step Two is understanding that holding soft, non-judgmental eye contact with someone communicates that you are fully present to them and also stimulates the limbic portion of the brain to produce oxytocin, the neurotransmitter hormone connected to trust and love.
The book goes on to discuss all 20 dimension and 12 steps to creating fulfilling and successful relationships for yourself and the individuals you communicate with. For more information you can visit www.changingbehavior.org for a free download excerpt from the book.

Computers Gaming and Technology Latest: The Advantages of ...

Cloud computing is a prevailing trend in the networking field today. It is even predicted that this technology will remain prevailing for years to come. There are many advantages that are given by this technology, and virtualization is its most prevalent feature that makes cloud computing technology very advantageous. Virtualization is procedure that creates virtual version of computing resources installed on the server of a network. There are a number of resources that can be virtualized over the cloud, including applications, platforms, and hardware. That virtual version has the same features with those of the actual version of those computing resources. Therefore, by using cloud computing technology, network administrator only needs to procure a single package of computing resources, instead of many, to power up the whole cloud. There are various applications that can be used to enable virtualization within a cloud system, and AppLogic from Scalematrix.com is currently considered the most reliable one. There are a number of reasons why this virtualization software is considered more reliable than any other competitors? virtualization applications that are available on the internet. Firstly, AppLogic is the easiest virtualization software to deploy a multi-tier cloud application, which performs application processing and data management in logically separate processes, across multiple physical servers. As a result, by using this software, you can deploy scalable applications and have multiple IP address quite easily. Secondly, App Logic enables perfect management and memory allocation of such computing processes as coding, data management, policies making, etc. and thus reduces the operational expense of the cloud and reduces the burden suffered by the computer?s CPU.

All of those advantages prove that this virtualization software will remain the most reliable and the most pervasively used virtualization software in the realm of cloud computing technology. If you are interested in using it, you can buy it online through its developer?s website.

Loyola beats Notre Dame to advance to NCAA men's lacrosse final

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.?

When the final horn sounded, Loyola players ran toward their big goalie, Jack Runkel, who stood to the left of the goal with both arms outstretched over his head.

On a day when the Greyhounds wanted him to come up big, Runkel came up huge in No. 1 seeded Loyola's 7-5 win against No. 4 Notre Dame in an NCAA Division I semifinal in front of an announced 31,774 at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

The Greyhounds will play Maryland, a 16-10 winner over Duke in the other semifinal, in the championship game at 1 p.m. Monday.
Loyola (17-1) had others who played significant roles: attackman Eric Lusby scored a game-high five goals, offensive midfielders Chris Layne, Davis Butts and Sean O'Sullivan dominated Notre Dame's short stick midfielders.

Loyola also held Notre Dame (13-3) scoreless for more than 20 minutes twice, and Greyhounds short-stick midfielder Josh Hawkins stifled Fighting Irish midfielder Max Pfeifer.

But all season, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Runkel was the Greyhounds' X-factor. Loyola's top 15 players were billed as the most talented bunch in the tournament, but no one knew how Runkel, a sophomore and first year starter, would respond in a postseason game.

And then came Saturday.

Runkel, who is from Fairfield, Conn, finished with 15 saves including 11 in the second half. Leading 7-5, Runkel twice stopped Notre Dame attackman Westy Hopkins with point blank saves from the top of the crease in the last minute, the final time with 24 seconds left.

Hopkins finished with two goals to lead Notre Dame, but neither he nor his teammates were a match for Runkel in crunch time.

"I think the first save I made was up top," Runkel said. "It kind of got me into a rhythm. My defense was giving me shots to see a very clear line from the shooter. So any goalie, I think, would gobble up those saves, and credit to my defense because they helped me out and let me see the shots I wanted to see."

"He was big," Loyola coach Charley Toomey said. "He was as big as he's ever been in there for us. When there was a break down, Runkel was right there to pick up the pieces. Definitely played his best game as a Greyhound for me."

Lusby, a senior from Severna Park High, was just as sensational, in three postseason games with 17 goals. His five goals Saturday marked the second straight game he has scored that many despite being locked off, double teamed or facing the opposition's best defensive player.

"I'm playing confident right now," Lusby said. "The past few games I've had a pretty good shooting percentage. I see net and I shoot for net. I don't try to pick corners. When you try to aim in an exact spot that's when you start messing with your head. So, I try to shoot for net and when I see an opening, I've been putting the ball where I want to, so that paid off."

Lusby had two goals in the first quarter when Loyola led, 2-1, at the end of the period, and he had two more to open the third, the second one with 11:40 left as the Greyhounds went ahead, 7-3.

In the first three quarters, Notre Dame couldn't contain Loyola's midfielders who drew slides, and then dumped off to Lusby. The Greyhounds were extremely effective against midfielders Devon Dobson and Quinn Cully.

But in the fourth period, Loyola's offense stalled and was hurt by turnovers. Notre Dame attackman Sean Rogers scored with 7:18 left in the game and Hopkins scored nearly a minute later to pull the Fighting Irish within 7-5. But Notre Dame couldn't overcome Loyola's swarming defense and Runkel.

The Fighting Irish had no rhythm and only one of their goals was scored in a 6-on-6 situation. Notre Dame finished tied with Loyola with 28 shots, but the Fighting Irish couldn't capitalize on winning 13 of 14 face-offs.

Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan gave some credit to Loyola's defense, but he was also disappointed in his offense. Before Saturday's game, Notre Dame had scored 13 goals against Yale in the first round, and 12 against defending national champion Virginia in the quarterfinals last week.

"It was almost inevitable that if we were going to score, we were going to score in spurts because we didn't possess the ball well," said Corrigan. "We weren't patient. We weren't protective in our shots. I don't think we have a bunch of great scorers. That's not who we are as a team. But we have a lot of guys who can score when we play good offense."

Burlingame Real Estate Agent Herb Schmulewicz Seeks Members ...

    Burlingame, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 15, 2011

Burlingame real estate agent Herb Schmulewicz is seeking knowledgable, caring and passionate businesspeople from all fields to join BYOB (Bring Your Own Business), a mastermind community social gathering geared towards establishing genuine business relationships and sharing valuable knowledge. Meetings typically take place twice a month in Burlingame. There are also fun quarterly socials such as billiards, bowling events and pool-side BBQs.

BYOB conducts meetings (or mastermind sessions) twice a month, typically in Burlingame. Businesspeople from all over the San Francisco Bay Area share business challenges, goals and the ability to allow others to provide constructive suggestions and recommendations. BYOB nurtures a think tank atmosphere, where everyone can learn ways to improve processes and increase business from new friends, said Schmulewicz.

BYOB focuses on two philosophies. The first is give and you shall receive, which is supported in the group by helping others through the sharing of knowledge for those who would like know and grow.

Unfortunately, many people start or join networking groups looking for immediate financial gains. That is the wrong reason, and in my opinion, those people really miss the boat, said Schmulewicz, real estate agent in Pacifica and founder of BYOB. Our group does not operate on give and I better get mentality. Its about being genuine, building caring relationships, helping others and letting nature take its course.

The second philosophy is create caring relationships with others. To get the most out of any networking experience, people need to build a relationship with those who they trust and want to stay in contact with, said Burlingame real estate agent Schmulewicz. Not everyone will send you referrals, but if you place value on the friendship, you can still get something out of group.

If interested people join the group and practice these two philosophies, then they have established sincere value in the relationships formed, even if they do not receive anything monetary in return.

BYOB was created 18 months ago by Schmulewicz and already includes a wide-variety of business associates, from landscapers to beauty/hair stylists, financial advisors to painters. They are currently seeking businesspeople who have characteristics such as integrity, perseverance, passion, caring, giving, excellence and knowledge.

Id like to see the group add more members in the next few months; however, Id really like to have people understand that this group is about caring, giving and friendships, said Schmulewicz. The rest will come together in due time.

For more information about Bring Your Own Business (BYOB), contact Herb Schmulewicz at (650) 784-1849. For a free home evaluation and or simple wanting to know how much a home is worth, click here.

How the Euro debt collectors are killing Greeks?taking away their medicines

    ?

    LaRouche Irish Brigade
    May 25, 2012

    ?

Greek pharmacists staged a one-day strike protesting the fact that the government owes them EU1 billion, which has created major shortages of medicines, which are killing Greeks. They say that this has caused an ?emergency situation? in which cancer and cardiac patients are in a panic because they cannot get the medications, either because they can no longer afford them or because they simply are not available.

?I give it 15 days. If the European Union doesn?t release the loans it has promised by then, there will be scenes of utter chaos here,? said Dimitris Karageorgiou, secretary general of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association. ?The situation will become dramatic. Already we have cancer sufferers going from hospital to hospital to try and find drugs, because no one can afford to stock them,? he said. ?If the shortages get worse, God knows what we will see.? Since the bailout started, he said ?120 pharmacies have closed in Athens alone because of pressures from delays in payments for prescriptions from social security funds.

Whatever you read about shortages is little. There are about 300 medicines that are no longer readily available. It?s tragic.?

?The situation with anti-cancer drugs is out of control, but what can we do?? one pharmacist said. ?Because we?re not being reimbursed, we can?t pay suppliers, who can?t pay the companies. It?s a chain effect.?

Under orders from the EU-ECB-IMF Troika, Athens amalgamated within months 13 social security funds into one body, the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY), which has had the effect allowing the government to centrally control the disbursement ? in reality, non-disbursement ? of funds.

Florida Creationism: Changing of the Guard

    Buffoon Award

Things just won?t be the same in Florida. First we reported that one of that state?s most dependable creationists won?t be back in the legislature next year because of term limits (see Stephen Wise: On the Way Out).

Then, although we didn?t write about it, Wise and another creationist champion, Orlando Senator Gary Siplin, the first convicted felon to serve in the Florida Legislature, have been recently implicated in a scandal regarding their use of a shadow program at Florida A&M University to pass through funds to non-profits the senators are affiliated with.

We don?t yet know if Siplin will be back next year. Recall that it was Siplin whose School Prayer Bill was recently passed. He and Wise have long been dependable allies of our favorite Florida legislator, Ronda Storms, the creationist queen of the Florida Senate back in 2008. It?s in her honor that our jolly logo adorns this post (see: Buffoon Award Winner ? Ronda Storms). To remind you of Ronda?s glory days four years ago, see Her Most Rapturous Moment.

We have constantly marveled at the incredibly wide-ranging intellectual versatility of our old creationist friend. Ronda is not only a major force in The Controversy between evolution and creationism, she also plays an active role in controversies about Prayer in Florida Schools, and also Naked School Boys, and also the Dewey Decimal System, and also religious license plates, and also serving alcohol at private museum events, and also gambling at Indian casinos.

We know this will break your heart, dear reader, but Rapturous Ronda won?t be back in the Florida Senate next year. In the Palm Beach Post we read Sen. Storms quits race, seeks property appraiser seat. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us:

State Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, is dropping her reelection bid and instead will run against embattled Hillsborough County Property Appraiser Rob Turner.

Oh no! What shall we do without Ronda? The story continues:

Storms, a former Hillsborough County commissioner, had two years left before she was term-limited out of the Senate. But she said Friday that a porn scandal surrounding Turner prompted her to abandon the legislature and instead try to oust her fellow Republican.

A porn scandal? Involving a Republican? How could that be? According to this Tampa Tribune story, Turner?s troubles mount:

Days after the Hillsborough County property appraiser admitted he traded lurid emails and text messages with a subordinate, two well-known politicians announced they will vie for his job. ? Once a shoo-in for re-election to a fifth term, Turner?s support within his party crumbled after he confirmed Monday that he exchanged explicit text messages and emails with Carolyn Filippone, his former girlfriend and human resources manager.

Egad! How could a Republican do such a thing? They quote Rapturous Ronda:

?I am unfortunately under the belief that the current property appraiser has embarrassed himself, embarrassed the office and embarrassed the party,? Storms said. ?I am going to run to restore professionalism and integrity and accountability to the property appraiser?s office.?

Noble sentiments! Let?s get back to the Palm Beach Post. They say:

Turner, Hillsborough?s property appraiser for 16 years, this week fired his human resources director, Caroline Filippone, after fighting a sexual discrimination complaint she filed with U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2010. The complaint, which alleged he sent her dozens of pornographic emails from 2007 to 2009 after a personal relationship between the two ended, was dismissed by the commission in April, which frees Filippone to sue Turner.

Great scandal. Too bad it doesn?t involve creationism. But what will become of Ronda?s Senate seat? The Post says:

Shortly after her announcement Friday, former Senate President Tom Lee, a Brandon Republican seen as a moderate, announced he would run for her east Hillsborough Senate seat. Storms said other possible candidates were state Reps. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview, and Shawn Harrison, R-Tampa.

It doesn?t matter, really. Without Ronda, things just won?t be the same. Meanwhile far worse things are happening in Florida. There?s no news on it lately, but don?t forget about the Florida Theocracy Amendment which will be on the ballot in November. That?s potentially far bigger than some goofball creationism bill.

Anyway, this year?s legislative session is over, and now Ronda is gone. So is Stephen Wise, and maybe Siplin will be going too. Things just won?t be the same in Florida, but there?s one thing of which we have no doubt ? The Controversy between evolution and creationism will continue.

How not to eat the wrong frog

Fringe-lipped bats can?t be fooled by imitators of favored prey

    Web edition : Friday, May 25th, 2012

Fringe-lipped bats eat frogs even though gulping the wrong one in the dark could be fatal.

New high-speed video of the tropical bats swooping toward various frogs and toads shows that the predators deploy a sequence of senses to update their judgment of prey during an attack to avoid eating a toxic amphibian, says behavioral ecologist Rachel Page of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Gamboa, Panama. The bats proved hard to fool even when researchers played the call of a favorite edible frog while offering up another species, Page and her colleagues report in an upcoming Naturwissenschaften.

In the tropics, various bats will nab a frog if given half a chance, but only the fringe-lipped species (Trachops cirrhosus) is known to follow frog calls, such as the ?tuuun chuck? call of the t?ngara frog (Engystomops pustulosus).

In tests in Panama, Page and her colleagues found that fringe-lipped bats turned aside in mid-air if researchers broadcast enticing t?ngara calls but offered up a cane toad (Rhinella marina), which is way too big for a bat to carry off.

The possibility that incoming bats might use echolocation to avoid overweight prey intrigues bat specialist Brock Fenton at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. Early studies of these bats largely ignored possible last-minute echolocation, he says.

The new tests also revealed that playing t?ngara calls while offering a right-sized but toxic leaf litter toad (Rhinella alata) led bats to catch and then drop the unpleasant prey. (Both bats and toads survived.)

This reaction fits with research on certain moth-hunting bats, says John M. Ratcliffe at the University of Southern Denmark. These moth specialists avoid a toxic tiger beetle when they hear its clicking noises but become much more likely to pick it up if researchers mute the clicks.

Joan Marans Dim: How America Became an Automobile Nation

In the early 1950s, one of my grandfather's great pleasures was taking his Pontiac out for a spin on Sunday afternoons in New York City. Gas was less than 25 cents a gallon. Traffic was a breeze. And the air was (relatively) clean.

Today, such vehicular pleasures can rarely be duplicated in America, especially in its larger cities.

Upon whose shoulders can we lay blame -- at least much of it -- for the loss of these pleasures?

The answer is Othmar H. Ammann, chief engineer and designer of the George Washington Bridge. In designing the span, Ammann, in an historic decision, designed a solely vehicular span -- a decision that triggered a cascade of events that led to an automobile nation and altered the quality of our lives and how we live and conduct business -- in New York City and across the country.

What followed was that Ammann's choice of a solely vehicular George Washington Bridge was admired and emulated by civil engineers and city planners. Ammann's decision also coincided with a period of great change in the nation as farms and wilderness were turned into auto-dependent suburbs and the desire for an Interstate highway system supplanted the need to maintain or build railroads.

Thus, the web of vehicular bridges, tunnels and highways multiplied, and what we have today is not just an automobile-dominated New York City, but an automobile nation.

A civil engineer, Ammann at 25 had immigrated from Switzerland in 1904. Even at this early date, he pored over maps of the Hudson River and created plans for the bridge he hoped to build.

Outside of engineering circles, Ammann was not well known. Nor was he socially or politically connected. Nevertheless, he quickly demonstrated his skills, particularly as an associate of Gustave Lindenthal, who designed the much-admired Hell Gate Arch Bridge, a rail span opened in 1916, that crossed the East River at Hell Gate.

Ammann would be chosen to design the George Washington Bridge and would become a premier molder of the modern city. He would be responsible for building many of New York's great 20th- century spans. To some, he would even eclipse John A. Roebling, designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. Ammann's additional accomplishments included the Bayonne Bridge (1931), Triborough Bridge (1936-renamed the Robert F. Kennedy), Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (1939), Throgs Neck Bridge (1961) and Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (1964). He also supervised the construction of the Lincoln Tunnel and consulted on other projects in New York and beyond, including the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Likely the reason most people have never heard of Ammann is that he eschewed publicity. He was, quite simply, a dedicated public servant, a meticulously organized executive, and a nose-to-the-grindstone genius. Widely respected and beloved by his colleagues, Ammann was the polar opposite of Robert Moses, New York City's cantankerous "Master Builder," who hired Ammann after his George Washington Bridge success.

Ammann, like Moses and others, understood America's escalating love affair with the automobile. Still, he had a choice with the George Washington Bridge. He could have built a combination train and motor vehicle bridge. Consider that the four long-span bridges that cross the East River, beginning with the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and ending with the Manhattan Bridge in 1909 -- built before the onslaught of the automobile took hold -- were bridges that accommodated trains or trolleys, the main mass transit at the turn of the 20th century. A solely vehicular bridge would be a significant departure from the city's philosophy of providing mass transit for its citizens. Still, Ammann chose to make the George Washington Bridge a solely vehicular bridge.

The need for vehicular bridges is made clear by author Sharon Reier in her book, The Bridges of New York:

Soon Tin Lizzies began swarming along the Hudson Valley, forming exasperating queues for the limited car space in ferries...The auto population of Bergen Country, New Jersey, went up 172 percent between 1923 and 1928. It was obvious to all... the internal combustion engine was going to need more facilities, and soon.

Similar exasperating scenes were also true for merchants wishing to ferry their goods across the Hudson River.

As a result of building a bridge for motor vehicles, regional travel, including commerce, could move seamlessly between New York and New Jersey and connect to the Bronx, Westchester County, and even New England. No longer would there be long lines at ferries to ship goods, people, and vehicles across the Hudson River. Moreover, the uptown site of the bridge, at 178th Street, avoided the bustle of midtown traffic.

The immediate success of the George Washington Bridge likely spurred Moses' building frenzy, a frenzy that ignored the needs of working stiffs by failing to support mass transit. Soon after the George Washington Bridge opened, Moses, then chairman of the Triborough Bridge Authority, hired Ammann to build the Triborough Bridge. Later Moses would hire Ammann to build the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge -- all exclusively motor vehicle bridges.

Ammann's fateful decision did not seem profoundly negative when the George Washington Bridge opened on Oct. 25, 1931.

Now, 80 years after the opening of the George Washington Bridge, one wonders if Ammann ever considered the magnitude of his decision. Did he think about how the blitz of automobiles would pollute the environment, create a dependence on oil, result in maddening traffic jams, and be a nail in the coffin of mass transit? If he had even an inkling of the future, would Ammann have added rails to his creations?

My guess is if Ammann had anticipated the evils of an automobile nation, he would have fought to make the George Washington Bridge (and his other bridges) combination rail and motor vehicle spans. By all reports, Ammann was a civil servant who wanted to do the right thing.

This Memorial Day weekend, as we take our automobiles out for a costly, gasping, traffic-clogged spin, it's instructive to remember that the road to hell is often paved with good intentions.

Many Years Young: Fitness may reduce hypertension risk

(UPI) People who have a parent with high blood pressure can reduce their risk of hypertension with moderate exercise, U.S. researchers say?

"The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise -- which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week -- can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history," [lead author Robin P.] Shook said in a statement.

Army spy blimp to launch within weeks: 300 feet long, $500 million, 'multi-intelligent'

    Image

It can't go faster than 34MPH and it's already a year late for its planned deployment in Afghanistan, but Northrop Grumman's Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) is now set for its maiden flight. The test run is scheduled for sometime between June 6th and 10th over Lakehurst, New Jersey, whose residents ought to be forewarned that it is not a solar eclipse or a Death Star, but simply a helium-filled pilotless reconnaissance and communications airship that happens to be the size of a football field. After floating around for a while, the giant dirigible is expected to journey south to Florida, where it'll be fitted to a custom-built gondola that will carry the bulk of its equipment, and by which time her enemies hopefully won't have come into possession of an air force.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Aroldis Chapman was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license early Monday, a few hours after it appeared he was in line to become the Cincinnati Reds' next closer.

General manager Walt Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker met with Chapman following a 4-1 win over Atlanta on Monday night to get details of the pitcher's arrest, which they didn't know about before the game.

Police in the Columbus suburb of Grove City emailed The Associated Press a copy of an arrest report showing the 24-year-old reliever was stopped after radar clocked him going 93 mph on northbound Interstate 71 shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday.

That was a few hours after Chapman moved to the front of the competition for the closer's job by finishing a 5-2 win over the Yankees in New York on Sunday for his first save of the season and the second of his career.

"I don't know what happened," Baker said after the meeting with Chapman. "He got a speeding ticket. It can happen to anybody. His people are taking care of it, and we're helping."

The arrest report said Chapman was seen speeding at 12:40 a.m. When police stopped him, they found he had a suspended Kentucky driver's license. He was arrested and photographed, then released on bond. He has a court appearance scheduled for June 6.

Chapman, who speaks to the media with a trainer serving as translator, wasn't available for comment after the meeting.

His arrest is the latest twist in the Reds' attempt to find someone to take the spot of closer Ryan Madson, out for the season with a torn elbow ligament. They gave left-hander Sean Marshall the first chance, but he struggled, prompting Baker to try the hard-throwing Cuban with a 0.00 ERA.

Marshall got the final out in the 4-1 win over the Braves on Monday. Baker wasn't going to use Chapman because he had pitched four of the previous five days.

"It's going to be a situation where we're going to have to use who we think is best on that day, and hopefully he's rested and the best guy for that day," Baker said before the game. "It could be a number of guys.

"This is what happens when you lose your closer, you know what I mean?"

The Reds signed Chapman to a six-year, $30.25 million deal in 2010, expecting him to develop into a dominant starter. With the rotation set and the team on its way to the NL Central title that year, they moved him into the bullpen for the first time.

He did so well that they kept him there for 2011 in a setup role, but he struggled with his control and developed a sore pitching shoulder. He finished 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 54 appearances that season.

Cincinnati planned to move him back into a starting spot during spring training until injuries decimated the back end of the bullpen. Madson had reconstructive elbow surgery, and setup men Bill Bray and Nick Masset got hurt.

So Chapman went back into a setup role and has dazzled, giving up only seven hits and one unearned run in 22 1-3 innings while striking out 39. He has been so dominant that Baker decided he might be ready to try closing games.

"He graduated to the setup role," Baker said. "Now, hopefully, he's graduated ? which we think he might have ? to the closer's role. It just depends on how often you can use him."

Given Chapman's shoulder problems last season, the Reds have been careful about pitching him too many days in a row. He pitched in four of five games in New York last week against the Mets and Yankees, but hasn't gone three days in a row ? typical for a closer.

"We didn't want to go four out of five," Baker said. "We hoped not to use him (that much). But we're on an honor basis ? he said he felt fine. I just tell him to make sure you're telling the truth. Right now it's not hero time. It's May, not September."

The Stats on Statins: Should Healthy Adults Over 50 Take Them?

    News | Health

Although a meta-analysis of statins suggests that healthy people over 50 take cholesterol-lowering drugs as a preventative measure, some researchers argue the benefits may not outweigh the risks

Everyone over 50 should take statins to lower their cholesterol, an editorial argued last week in The Lancet. The piece based its recommendation on a meta-analysis of 27 clinical trials published in the same issue that concluded statins significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events in healthy people without posing substantial risks. Subsequent articles heralding the meta-analysis's findings were published in the Guardian, Forbes and the U.K. Telegraph. But based on the numbers, many experts still aren't convinced that the drugs' benefits outweigh their risks.

There's no question that statins save lives when they are prescribed to people with cardiovascular disease. But whether the drugs should also be given to healthy people who do not have high cholesterol or other cardiovascular risk factors has been a long-standing and controversial question. One large clinical trial known as JUPITER reported in 2008 that rosuvastatin (Crestor) lowers the risk of heart attacks and other events by 44 percent in healthy subjects but experts have since raised questions about its methodology in part because the trial was stopped early, which might have created the effect of overestimating the drug's benefits. The current meta-analysis was designed to help put the issue to rest. "Our aim was to bring together all the available evidence," explains co-author Colin Baigent, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in England.

After pooling the results of 27 trials involving 165,149 people, the meta-analysis reported that people are 21 percent less likely to suffer a serious vascular event such as a heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery after their cholesterol drops by the amount that might be expected after taking statins for a year than are similar people who do not take the pills. But such outcomes are rare in healthy individuals anyway, so the risk reduction actually translated to a small clinical benefit?reducing the overall risk from 4.04 percent to 3.27 percent per year, a difference of 0.77 percent.

In other words, approximately 130 people need to take statins for a year to prevent just one unwanted health outcome, and 500 people have to take them to prevent a single death. "Once you get down to very low levels of risk, the benefits are very small," Baigent admits.

Experts also raise questions about the subjects included in the meta-analysis. Although the review was supposedly designed to assess the effects of statins in people at low risk of vascular disease, 60 percent of its participants in fact already had vascular disease. "Why combine people who have heart disease with people who don't? It's really misleading," says Kausik Ray, a cardiologist at Saint George's University of London. In 2010 Ray and his colleagues published a meta-analysis of 11 statin clinical trials involving 65,229 subjects without cardiovascular disease and concluded that statins do not reduce the risk of death in healthy people. (By including people who had vascular disease, the Lancet meta-analysis overestimated statins' benefits: a subgroup analysis reveals that among people who did not have vascular disease, statins only reduced the absolute risk of a cardiovascular event by 0.4 percent per year.)
