Olympics fans find ways to circumvent NBC's online control

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It took Jason Legate, a Walnut Creek, California-resident, all of 10 minutes to connect his computer to a London-based server and access BBC's coverage of the Olympics Saturday, thereby circumventing NBC's lock on coverage in the United States.

The 31-year-old system administrator said he has watched at least 12 hours of live BBC coverage (his favorite sport so far - judo) since he set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection to send all his Internet traffic to a server in London.

Legate is one of many viewers who, turned off by NBC's ironclad control of access to Olympics coverage in the United States and spotty online streaming, has resorted to a workaround--sometimes legal, sometimes not--to watch the Games when and how they want on feeds from countries such as the UK and Canada.

NBC, which spent $1.18 billion for the rights to broadcast the Olympics on the Internet and on television in the United States, has made it impossible for people without a pricey cable or satellite subscription to watch the Olympics live in the United States. Viewers can receive a complimentary four hours of live content with a temporary pass.

Only those customers who are first "authenticated" as paying cable or satellite subscribers have access to live streaming of every Olympic event, a move that has led to a explosion of anger at the network on Twitter under the unofficial "#NBCfail" hashtag.

Other complaints included NBC streaming that didn't work and the network bombarded viewers had too much advertising.

For its regular network coverage, NBC, which is owned by cable giant Comcast Corp, has tape-delayed some of the most popular sports for the U.S. prime-time audience, meaning they air nearly five to six hours after they have happened.

This helps NBC maximize its return-on-investment by saving the top events for the largest audience and thereby the biggest advertising pay-off. But it has also led to event spoilers and criticism that the network was putting the interests of its business over those of its viewers.

The tape delay and some glitches in the coverage fueled wider criticism of NBC. But NBC spokesman Chris McCloskey, who declined to comment on the matter, pointed to the 7 million live streams, which was a record on the first day of competition. The company is making every event available live online -- except the opening and closing ceremonies.

Enter a small but vocal group of tech savvy Olympics fans who are finding new ways to watch the world's biggest sports event away from their TV sets.

These fans use techniques that make it seem like their computers are located outside the United States, giving them access to streaming access to the Games held by companies other than NBC in countries such as Canada or the UK. Think of it as a sporting version of how Internet users in China access banned websites by routing traffic through servers in Hong Kong in order to fool government censors.

"Because all of my Internet traffic looks like it's coming from that box in England, the BBC thinks I'm located in England," Legate said of the workaround he utilizes.

Like NBC in the United States, the BBC's Olympic rights only allow it to show the games to users in the UK. For example, when from the United States to watch a BBC or CTV stream for example they are greeted with various messages telling them that they don't have access.

Legate still pays for cable service through his local provider Astound, but said he decided to boycott NBC after he was unable to find a live broadcast of the opening ceremonies last Friday. He was also miffed by comments made by an NBC spokesman to the LA Times on Friday about the opening ceremony not translating well online because it is "complex" and requires context for a U.S. audience.

"To me, it just felt like they were insulting everyone so I basically decided to boycott NBC for the duration of the games, which meant I had to find an alternative," he said.

Legate said he has set up the same connection for a friend who wanted to watch dressage, an equestrian event that she could not find on NBC.

People who are finding ways to circumvent NBC's restrictions seem to be spreading the word to friends, like New York City journalist Kate Gardiner, who sent out a public service announcement message on Twitter last weekend to urge her followers to use a service called TunnelBear.

The 26-year-old has been using the service to keep up with live swimming broadcasts even though she does not own a television.

TunnelBear is a VPN service that sends a user's Internet connection to different countries, so in Gardiner's case it appears her computer is based in London. The decision to avoid NBC was easy for her since she's one of the millions of U.S. residents without a cable subscription.

"I'm not going to buy a cable subscription to spend three weeks watching Olympics coverage. It's not going to happen," she said.

So far it is unclear whether NBC would take on the task of blocking or suing services like TunnelBear or StreamVia, a similar workaround. Typically, NBC has left it to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)to police the piracy of the games' TV rights.

NBC Sports spokesman McCloskey said the company never comments on issues involving security.

The workarounds--as well as the outrage--so far seem to be having no effect on TV rating for the Olympics. NBC has pointed to record-breaking success through the first three days of the games, with more than 36 million average viewers, including more than 40 million people watching the opening ceremony.

But while these fledgling services may seem popular on Twitter and blogs, many people could be turned off by them because they involve several steps that may be too advanced for a casual Internet user and can cost money, said City University of New York journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, who has tested them out. After 500 megabytes of streaming video, users need pay for a $5 subscription on TunnelBear, for example.

"While TunnelBear is easier than some services, you've got to geek out and you've got pay," Jarvis said, adding that the number of people using these services is a fraction of those tuning into NBC.

Jarvis said people circumventing NBC don't pose a threat and they are just consumers trying to make a point.

"It says 'Hey, we can go around you,' and the lesson there is, if you think you can control communication, content and culture around borders, it is going to be become increasingly difficult," he said.

The challenge of charity comms? | Diary of an internal communicator

What would you think would be the main communication challenges when working for a charity? Many assume that budget restrictions would be the toughest issue, with the perception that this would lead to less creativity (less ability to produce stuff) or more creativity (more pressure).

Alex Smith is Head of Communications at Target Ovarian Cancer, the national ovarian cancer charity.?She has worked in both internal and external communications for a range of organisations, including Bupa, Virgin Media, Mencap, Britvic, Westpac Bank and General Electric. Here she writes for Diary of an internal communicator as part of my series of guest articles, to offer an insight into the world of charity comms. Thank you and over to you Alex?

The challenge of charity comms
Working in comms for a charity isn?t that different in terms of day-to-day tasks. My current priorities are a communications review, a website review and to write our annual report/review. We?re able to focus on the communication infrastructure as we know it?ll be a quiet month with the Olympics on. Recently we?ve revisited our key messages, and had some fantastic success with placing women with ovarian cancer in the media, supporting news of an awareness campaign.

Audience definition
For me, the most challenging aspect of charity comms is the audience overlap, and the difficulty of audience definition. Our priority audience is women with ovarian cancer. We also communicate with families and friends, journalists, parliamentarians, nurses, GPs, medical professionals, researchers and the public.

When we?re talking to MPs, journalists and opinion leaders, we talk about the shocking facts that the UK?s survival rates are amongst the lowest in Europe, about how there have been no new treatments developed in the past 20 years. When we?re talking to women who are newly diagnosed, we give them information, support, reassurance. But what about the MP who has ovarian cancer, or the journalist whose wife, daughter or mother has just been diagnosed? If we want donations from the public, we need to tell them that 12 women die every day from ovarian cancer, with a shocking 36 per cent survival rate. But one of our main audiences are members of the public who are experiencing symptoms of ovarian cancer, not yet diagnosed, for whom the low survival rates are terrifying.

Concentric circles
We don?t distinguish between internal and external comms, as we?re fortunate to have fantastic volunteer support from women with ovarian cancer, their families and friends, in fundraising, campaigning and awareness-raising. Without them, we wouldn?t be able to have as much impact, so I prefer to view our audiences as concentric circles, with those most involved (staff and women with ovarian cancer) at the centre.

Our staff communications should be simple, with only 14 full time employees, limited geographical variation and 100 per cent computer access, but the subject matter makes it complicated. If a woman has just found out her cancer has recurred (as it does with around 75 per cent of cases), the last thing she wants is someone from comms asking her if she?s up for being interviewed by the media, or someone from fundraising asking how she?s getting on with the event she was planning. We need to communicate quickly and sensitively.

Plus the low survival rates mean that sadly, many of the women we work very closely with, die from their cancer ? a tough message for an office day, plus constant reminders when everything we do contains the voices of the women we work with? in photos, quotes, blogs and video content.

But back to the question around budgets and creativity, I have no issues. We have a solid business plan and clear objectives, based on comprehensive research into what the priority areas are for ovarian cancer. Every member of the team knows exactly what they need to do to contribute ? and we get feedback from the people we impact on a daily basis, so I know I?m making a positive difference. And I?ve worked in many organisations, both corporate and voluntary, that do not have that clarity, even if they do have the budgets!

You can find out more about Target Ovarian Cancer via the?website, follow us on Twitter @TargetOvarian or find us on Facebook, Alex.

Thanks Alex for such an interesting and thought-provoking article. I was shocked by some of those stats! I found it particularly interesting to read that the charity doesn?t distinguish between internal and external comms. What did you think of what she wrote? Please feel free to comment below. If you have a topic you think other comms professionals would be interested in reading about, do check out my guest article guidelines and get in touch?with your ideas and your post could be appearing here, Rachel.

They where all born on the same day, March 19th, in Houston Texas. They where all born with a colored streak in their hair. Three sets of twins that where born to three mothers that where really close friends. There was a set a girls, a set of boys, and a set of one boy and one girl. They grew up together, all having a normal life. They became very close friends and where a very tight nit group. They did everything together and when they became teenagers each one became closer to another. They didn?t know they where different, they where living normal lives, falling in love going through school. Every year they celebrated their birthdays together, they graduated together, and when they all went off to the same college sharing a three bed apartment, things where good until they turned 21.

On their 21st birthday everything changed for the three sets of twins. At midnight they all felt something different, they where each blessed with an element. Earth, fire, air, water, spirit, and darkness. They got a note that appeared out of nowhere on the table it read:

You are now being hunted. Your parents are dead. Each of you have an element that has been blessed to you. You need to run, and run far. You are now the ones that will save the human race. I will be sending you notes for where you are suppose to go. Head north.-The One

Now they are on the run, they have no clue what is going on but all they know is they have to trust ?The One?.

The 1940 U.S. Census ? Irish Genealogical Society International ...

If you?re an Ancestry.com subscriber with one or more?family trees posted on the site, you?ve probably been receiving ?record hints? about family members found in?the 1940 U.S.?Census.? An excellent?article about the 1940 census appears?in NGS Magazine (Volume 38, Number 2, April-June 2012), published by the National Genealogical Society.

The article, ?The 1940 federal census?, was written by Constance Potter and Diane Petro. End notes indicate their information was drawn from several government sources, such as the Bureau of the Census and http://1940census,archives.gov. I encourage you to find a copy of the magazine?and read?the article?in its entirety. Following are excerpts:

As with every census, the 1940 census shows the social, political, and economic issues of the previous decade.? This census reflects the Great Depression and President Franklin D. Roosevelt?s New Deal recovery programs of the 1930s?

The enumeration districts are smaller in the 1940 census; it appears that the average enumeration district is between fifty and sixty pages. There can be up to three sets of pages for each enumeration district: page 1A and pages following; page 61A and pages following; and page 81A and pages following. Page 1A and the following pages list the people at home the day of the census; for people not at home the day of the census, but enumerated on a later date, the enumerator listed them starting on page 61A. Transients ? such as people living in trailer parks, hotels or flop houses ? are listed beginning on page 81A. Not all enumeration districts have pages 61A or 81A or both.

After the census got to Washington, the staff stamped the pages for each county consecutively starting with 1. Because it can appear that pages were skipped, the stamped pages let you know that no pages are missing.

Column 7: Identification of Persons Furnishing Information?

The instructions to the enumerator asked the census taker to mark with a circled X the person in each home who answered the questions. Often, the wife gave the information. If the information came from a person who was not a member of the household, the enumerator was to ?write the name of this person in left-hand margin??

Column 14: Education ? Highest Grade of School Completed?

Although questions about education were asked in earlier censuses, this is the first time the census asked for the highest grade of school completed. At that time, many peopled graduated from high school in the eleventh grade.

Column 16: Citizenship?of the Foreign Born??

Beginning with the 1900 census, people were asked if they were naturalized, had filed their papers, or were aliens. In 1940, the Census Bureau added the category ?American Citizen Born Abroad,? which covered people born abroad or at sea?

Columns 17-20: In What Place Did This Person Live on 1 April 1935?

The Census Bureau, interested in internal migration, asked everyone where he or she lived on 1 April 1935?If a person had lived in a different place, the enumerator entered the city or town, county, and state. If the person lived in the same place, but a different house, the enumerator entered ?Same place? and if the person lived in the same house, the enumerator wrote ?Same house.?

Columns 21-33: Employment Status

The schedule asked thirteen questions about the employment status of people 14 years old and older. Except for columns 27 and 31, the answers apply to the week of 24-30 March, the week before the census. Included in the new questions was ?Amount of money, wages, or salary received (including commissions)? (column 32). Many people, including farmers and restaurant and store owners have a 0 in that column. That is because these people were not working for wages or a salary, but were self-employed.

Column 22: Public Emergency Work

The census asked if anyone in the household during the week of 24-30 March 1940, was at work on, or assigned to, public emergency work projects conducted by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the National Youth Administration (NYA), the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) or state or local work relief agencies. The WPA, established 6 May 1935, developed programs to move unemployed workers from relief to jobs? The NYA, established under the WPA, gave part-time jobs to high school and college students to earn money to continue their education.

The CCC, created 31 March 1933, employed men aged 18-25 in conservation work in the national parks and forests?

Columns 35-50: Questions on the Supplemental Schedules

At the bottom of each schedule, a supplementary schedule asked additinoal questions of 5 percent of the population, or two people on preselected lines. These supplemental questions include the birthplace of the respondent?s parents, military service, and if a person had deductions from Social Security or Railroad Retirement taken from wages.

Starting with the 1880 census, people were asked not only where they were born but also the birthplace of their father and mother. In the 1940 census, this question was moved to the supplemental schedule?

The answers to the new questions ? and the old ? will tell us, in detail, what the United States looked like on April 1, 1940, and what issues were most relevant to Americans after a decade of economic depression. As with all censuses, the answers to these questions may lead to different avenues of research.

Thanks to NGS Magazine and authors Constance Potter and Diane Petro.

Despite their time off, May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings won three gold and four silver medals on the 2011 World Tour.

In boxing, American MIddleweight Terrell Gausha, from Cleveland, will box against Armenian Andranik Hakobyan today at 5:15 p.m. Gausha has a good shot at gold. He is the reigning USA National Middleweight Champion, winning a double tie-breaker to take that title, and he is a five-time Cleveland Golden Gloves Champion.

EYES ON LONDON: British anti-climax, hidden flame

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

IT WASN'T TO BE

The excitement near the road course finish line outside the palace fell flat as Great Britain and favorite Mark Cavendish failed to win a medal.

"I was there when he didn't win it!" shouted Richard Jones of London.

He'd been watching the race on television with his wife and another couple when they decided with an hour to go to hustle over to Buckingham Palace for the finish.

"We practically did a triathlon to get here," said Jane Carson of Chester. "And we didn't even get very close ? but neither did Cav."

___

STAG DO

A rowing regatta isn't the usual place to start a bachelor party.

It worked out just fine for husband-to-be Martin Stanning, though, as he watched sister Heather romp to victory in the women's pair with partner Helen Glover at Dorney Lake? setting a Olympic best time in the process.

Martin was under orders in the "stag do" ? as it's called in Britain ? from his older brother Alistair, who was organizer-in-chief. His parents were there, too.

Glover and Stanning are big favorites to win the final of the women's pair on Wednesday after going through this season unbeaten. If they win gold, they'll become the first British women to do so.

?Steve Douglas ? Twitter http://twitter.com/sdouglas80

___

HOT VENUE

Although the ExCel venue is well south of the Olympic Park, the venue is shaping up as a surprisingly good place to catch the Olympic spirit.

ExCel is hosting boxing, weightlifting, judo, fencing and table tennis in separate spaces, but the sprawling complex is connected by a central hall that has turned into a pedestrian mall where the combined crowd can mingle amid a large array of dining options.

With thousands of fans pouring off trains Saturday, ExCel had a remarkable vibe as each of its sports except wrestling got underway. The venue's only obvious flaw is a lack of seating in that central hall, where hundreds of people are just sitting on the ground to eat their baked potatoes and curries.

___

HERE COMES THE SUN

Another day in often-soggy London, another healthy dose of blue skies and bright sunshine. With a cool breeze blowing gently, it's hard to imagine a better start to these games from a weather perspective.

How did we get so lucky? Maybe Sir Paul asked John and George to put in a good word for a little help from above.

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APKrawczynski

___

GYM INTRIGUE

There's intrigue at the men's gymnastics.

China, which hasn't lost a major competition since the 2004 Olympics, is already second after a dismal performance this morning.

The U.S. has got through its worst event ? pommel horse ? in decent shape while Japan, runner-up to China at both the Beijing Olympics and the last two world championships, had to count a fall on high bar, one of its better events.

? Nancy Armour, Twitter www.twitter.com/nrarmour

___

KAZAKH GOLD

After a sprint finish, Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan wins the Olympic gold medal in the men's cycling road race. Britain's high hopes of a medal have been dashed.

___

CANADA PROUD

"This is only my second one since 1972, so I am a rookie to opening ceremony, but one word: Proud!" ? "Captain Canada" Ian Millar, 10-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic silver medallist in team show jumping

?Danica Kirka ? http://twitter.com/danicakirka

___

OLYMPIC SPIRIT

Putting aside their rivalry here, football players from Brazil, Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand are sharing the same hotel in Manchester and are getting along just fine.

The Brazilian federation has posted photos of the teams playing table tennis together and says players from the four teams have been mingling in activities throughout the hotel. The teams are playing in Group C of the men's Olympic tournament.

? Tales Azzoni ? Twitter http://twitter.com/tazzoni

___

SECOND BEST

Greg Munford, 31, applied for "loads" of tickets but didn't get a single one. "I was gutted," he says.

So he came from his home in the English city of Bath to London's Hyde Park, where thousands of people are sprawled on wood chips (the grass fell victim to a concert series and wet weather) watching five big screens showing everything from handball to cycling.

"If I can't get to the venues this is the second-best place to be," says Munford. "I'm soaking up the spirit." He admits he didn't understand much of the dressage on the screen, but offered: "It all looks very elegant!"

? Niko Price ? Twitter http://twitter.com/nikoprice

___

BUSTLING PARK

Tourist Time.

Olympic Park is hustling and bustling. The pathways are filled with foot traffic, the merchandise stores bursting with visitors.

Everyone appears to be getting the lay of the land, and the benches and tables appear to be very popular as folks grab a rest from all the walking.

?Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APKrawczynski

___

CHAOS AT THE PALACE

There's chaos outside Buckingham Palace where the men's road course race will zoom by at the finish.

Thousands are surging toward the barricades, as security is imploring people to back up into Green Park or move further down the course.

Nobody wants to move, though, as everyone is eager to see Great Britain possibly win its first medal.

?Jenna Fryer ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennafryer

___

HIDDEN FLAME

It's a shame you can't see the Olympic flame. That was the reaction from visitors to London's Olympic Park and across Twitter on Saturday, as the intricate cauldron and its copper petals remained out of sight in the middle of the stadium.

All recent Olympics have featured a flaming cauldron, visible across the Olympic precinct.

But in London, only spectators lucky enough to have a ticket for events inside the main stadium will actually see it. Other park visitors will only be able to see an image beamed onto big screens.

At a news conference Saturday, cauldron creator Thomas Heatherwick defended the decision, saying organizers had tried to resist the temptation of creating a cauldron that was bigger, fatter or higher than at previous games.

"There was the complete precedent of the 1948 (London) Games of the cauldron set within the stadium... to one side with the spectators and with the technology we now have that didn't exist in 1948 it can be shared with everyone in the Park with screens," Heatherwick said.

The cauldron design was backed by the UK prime minister, but some members of the International Olympic Committee are said to be privately critical of the concept.

___

HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Seems even the queen can't resist the opportunity to act with Daniel Craig.

The British monarch didn't need much persuading to take part in the brief flick that electrified the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, says Jackie Brock-Doyle, the spokeswoman for the organizing committee.

"She liked the whole concept Danny brought together," she says ? presumably right down to the detail of having the queen's corgis, Monty, Holly and Willow, similarly take starring roles.

The matter was presented to her majesty by organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe last year.

? Danica Kirka ? http://twitter.com/danicakirka

___

CLOSE SHAVE

British gymnast Louis Smith knows a thing or two about making a statement. The eccentric 23-year-old ? the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on pommel horse ? is known as much for his well-coiffed hair and elaborate tattoos as his elegant routines.

A couple of days before the biggest ? and perhaps final ? meet of his life, Smith slipped out of the Olympic village to his home in Peterborough to visit his barber.

"I could have used one in the village, but I didn't want to tell him he was doing it wrong," Smith said.

He returned with a distinctive do, with shaved sides and a meticulously groomed flowing flattop.

Smith says the "hip" cut is designed to grab the kind of attention he thinks the sport needs.

?Will Graves ? Twitter http://twitter.com/WillGravesAP

___

AN AMAECHI MOMENT

Strolling through security to enter Olympic Park, former British basketball star John Amaechi says he has been quite pleased with how his home country has opened these games.

The center paired with gymnast Nadia Comaneci to take the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena earlier this month and is eager to see how Britain opens against powerful Russia in its men's basketball opener on Sunday.

"It's been wonderful so far, but the real work hasn't even started," Amaechi says. "That will tell the tale."

?Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APKrawczynski

___

I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT ...

Dressed head to toe in the British flag ? or, rather, AS the British flag ? Mick Burn wanted to find a spot along the road course to cheer cyclist Mark Cavendish.

But his outfit was so extreme, the man from Watford in Hertfortshire couldn't make it more than a few feet (meters) at a time without being stopped by fans wanting to pose for a picture with him.

"I've been mobbed all day," he says. And he's delighted by that fact.

It took him almost two years and 200 pounds (more than $300) to assemble the outfit, which consisted of everything from "posh golf pants," a waistcoat, his watch, eyeglasses and even his underwear. The toughest item was the sport coat, which cost him 50 pounds (about $75) on eBay.

Burn had thought his niece, rower Lucinda Gooderham, would be competing in these games. She didn't qualify, but he vowed to keep fine-tuning the outfit for Rio.

See a picture of him here: http://pic.twitter.com/IxF6WM7y

?Jenna Fryer ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennafryer

___

SMOOOOOOOOOOTH

"Louis Smith as smooth as strawberries and cream on pommel horse. It's like he's in slow motion, control in amazing." ? AP's Will Graves tweets from the gymnastics venue. A spectacular pommel horse by Britain's Smith capped the day for the British, who finished almost 2.5 points ahead of China with at a total of 272.420. Team finals are Monday.

?Will Graves ? Twitter http://twitter.com/WillGravesAP

___

GHOST TOWN

On a Saturday lunchtime, London's main shopping area, Oxford Street should be packed. Saturday afternoon, it is surprisingly empty of the usual crowd of Londoners and tourists. Were there a lot of late nights last night at opening ceremony parties or are the crowds in different parts of London enjoying the events?

Tokyo bakery's visual recognition checkout sorts the sandwiches from the croissants (video)

Tokyo bakery's visual recognition checkout sorts the sandwiches from the croissants (video)

We've seen food recognition tools in the past, but none as slick as this one being trialed at a Tokyo bakery. Co-developed by Brain Corporation and the University of Hyogo, the camera-equipped, automatic checkout is not only quick, but also accurate -- it's even able to distinguish different types of sandwich. And, if it can't tell exactly what's on the tray, it'll give you a list of suggestions and then use your selection to inform later scans. Currently, the system is said to be particularly useful for part-time staff that aren't completely familiar with the bakery's offerings, but it also has potential in all kinds of retail situations, much to the disappointment of the trusty barcode. Combine this system with Bakebot, however, and staff won't be needed at all. If you're hungry to see the checkout in action, head past the break for a visual snack.

'Wazzock': British media hammer Romney on Olympic comments

(Charles Dharapak/AP)

LONDON?On day three of his overseas tour, Mitt Romney woke up to unfriendly headlines from the British media, who continue to trash him for telling NBC News that he found preparations for the Olympics here "disconcerting."

"Mitt the Twit," declared The Sun tabloid, trashing Romney as a "wannabe president."

The Independent headlined their take on Romney's trip, "Romneyshambles"?accusing him of not only committing a diplomatic gaffe but later "the cardinal sin of U.S. politics, flip-flopping" on his criticism.

The Daily Telegraph suggested Romney's "Olympic gaffe" had overshadowed his trip to London.

Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Mail slammed Romney as "devoid of charm, offensive and a wazzock."

Romney's comments led newscasts on both Sky News and the BBC on Thursday night and early Friday morning, just hours ahead of the Olympic opening ceremonies here.

"Is this guy really prepared to be president?" one Sky News reporter asked in his Thursday night report about Romney's day in London. The reporter trashed the GOP candidate's comments as "just daft."

Romney has repeatedly tried to dial back on his criticism, first in a news conference Thursday outside 10 Downing Street, where he had met with British Prime Minister David Cameron?who had been publicly critical of Romney's remarks earlier in the day.

[Get more updates from Romney's overseas trip by following @hollybdc on Twitter]

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan Thursday night, Romney again tried to contain the controversy, telling the CNN host he believes the London games will be successful.

"It's great. It's absolutely fabulous," Romney said of being in London for the games. "You know I'd never been to an Olympics before I was given the Olympic job. I mean I've done the same thing everybody else did. I watched the games on TV. But to actually be here and to experience not just the athletes but also the volunteers who are working hard and excited, and then the whole community comes together? It's fabulous."

Citing the "enthusiasm" of the people in London, Romney added, "I think you are going to see terrific games that will be long time in our memories."

Benefits Of An Insurance Auto Auction ? WWG ? Clan

July 26, 2012

Tags: auto auctions, Automotive, buying used cars, car auctions, insurance auto auction, new and used cars, Truck and Loading Software, used car sales

Insurance auto auction is very popular among motor vehicle dealers due to profitable conditions that they offer and several vehicles that the buyer may choose from. This type of auction usually deals with salvaged vehicles, boats, bikes and trucks from different accidents. Due to the fact that these auctions usually get the orders straight from the insurance companies, the numbers of vehicles that are on offer are always likely to be very high.

The main reason for existence of the salvage vehicle auctions is usually to sell trade vehicles that have been reposed by the indemnity firms and other organizations for different reasons. However, some auctioned motor vehicles also come from vehicle rental firms that may be interested in upgrading their fleet. One is always likely to find all kinds of buyers at these auctions.

One good thing about this type of auction is that it is always free entry and opens to all members of public. This means that an individual do not have to be a holder of special license for them to be allowed entry. This makes it suitable for every public member.

Because the cars at the auctions always need to be sold very fast, the prices are likely to be very low. This gives the buyers opportunity to buy cars that may be in good condition at very competitive rate. Another reason why rates at the auctions are always likely to be very low is due to the belief that most vehicles sold through auctions are salvage vehicles.

Despite low prices of vehicles in this type of auctions, most sellers still prefer to sell their cars through it. This is basically because of the availability of ready market. This reduces the period one would need to wait for a buyer. The seller does not also need to advertise the cars for the buyers.

Going with the auctions also allows an individual to optimize means by which they can get the best possible returns. This will in away reduce the losses that they are likely to incur. Even if the selling price would be very low, it still reduces the amount of loss.

Because of the stiff competition for customers that normally exist between different insurance auto auction operators, they always aim to improve the quality of service to clients. Some of them even provide transportation for the cars from salvation venues to the auctions site. Others also provide stores for the vehicles where mechanics can attend to them. All these are done to attract and retain customers.

Find out how to take part in an auto auction yourself at http://www.carauctionsinfo.org. Read about how insurance auto auctions work at http://www.carauctionsinfo.org/insurance_auto_auction.html.
