No one is hurt when a live wire hits the ground on State Street.

EAGLE - CoDee Martin had little time to think when he saw a power line falling toward his 5-year-old daughter, Kora, during the Eagle Fun Days Wet & Wild Parade on Saturday.

After a flagpole from a parade float snagged one of three lines stretched across the 600 block of State Street about 2:45 p.m., Martin grabbed Kora and threw her about 10 feet to safety. She landed in a strip of grass between the side of the road and the sidewalk.

He worried that she might be hurt, of course, but said the danger would have been worse if he had not acted.

"I didn't know what else to do," Martin said. "Thank goodness she wasn't hurt."

Martin said he ran to safety just in time.

"The line hit two feet behind me," he said.

When the live wire hit the ground, it sent out an electrical jolt, Martin said. It was strong enough to knock his sister, SanDee Case, to the ground and cause her to scrape her knees, he said.

"You could feel it when the wire hit," he said.

The accident happened right near the start of the wet portion of the parade, when floats and firetrucks douse parade watchers with water. That compounded the potential danger, Martin said. He said he yelled at several people running in the wet pavement near where the line went down to stay back.

"It was surprising and fortunate that no one was hurt," said Division Chief Nevil Humphreys of the Eagle Fire Department.

The area was cordoned off and deputies from the Ada County Sheriff's Office kept people away from the downed line, he said. Crews from Idaho Power responded and cut the electricity.

The parade began at 2 p.m. and was scheduled to finish 90 minutes later.

Many people left the parade route after the accident, said Statesman photographer Darin Oswald, who was photographing the event.

The parade later resumed, Humphreys said.

"They just diverted around that area," he said.
